Must be some serious parties in Iowa Fark..

Is that really the proper use of "ironic"? I mean, really, where's the incongruence?

I'll bet their displays are much more realistic now

I grew up in Fort Madison so I'm getting a kick out of these replies...

/Had to get that in there
//Hope everyone still there is safe and well.

m0loch: Is that really the proper use of "ironic"?

Not really. If it was "The Museum of Flood Prevention Equipment", then it would be ironic.

BackAssward [TotalFark] 2008-06-21 08:38:18 PM
You could say that since museums portray a sterile example of something, that to have the real thing happen there, would be ironic. That they spent huge amounts of time setting up displays on a subject, then have the real thing occur.

-1 for a severe lack of commas, Subby.

You know what would have been ironic? if it had been flooded, not by water but by chardonnay, and there was a black fly in it.

mikaloyd 2008-06-21 10:53:39 PM
The flood museum now featuring lifelike realism.

CygnusDarius [TotalFark] 2008-06-21 10:53:42 PM
Well, just say it's a real-life representation of a flood.

Do you think this was like Jurassic Park, and the flood escaped the Flood Museum, and that's why we're having all these problems?

WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE!!!?

/of course you think it

'Ironic' has become like the tree falling in the forest thing, something's only ironic if no one ever hears about it.

/huh

Bad execution of the "not news, news, fark" gimmick. How does the museum being in Iowa suddenly turn it from not news into news?

NYCNative 2008-06-21 10:59:34 PM
Better headlibe, did I submit.

DrGunsforHands 2008-06-21 11:00:11 PM
If it was the only building to not flood, then it would truly be ironic.

And a better headline, too...

FTA: The flood of 1993 was thought to be a once-in-a-lifetime event for residents of Fort Madison, Iowa.

That would only be if you had been in CVS looking for something else, and JUST AS YOU PASSED BY that shelf full of douchebags, you suddenly, urgently needed a douchebag for your painfully blocked intestines. THAT would have been ironic. Douchebag.

it would be ironic if they had fire insurance instead.

The Flood Museum? Is one of those exhibits a Lucky Ball and Chain? Is another a Sapphire Bullet of Pure Love? Do the security guards work there for Minimum Wage? Are they sometimes caught Whistling In The Dark?

/ok I'll stop now

Hollie Maea 2008-06-21 11:06:32 PM
Krayon: Have you...been...watching the news lately?

Right...things are flooding in Iowa. But...that pretty much does the opposite. It's not news that a museum flooded in Iowa because we've known for a week that everything in Iowa is flooded. Now if a museum flooded (completely flooded like this, not just a puddle in the basement from a busted line) in, say, Denver, then it would be news.

dragyne 2008-06-21 11:06:37 PM
It would be more ironic if it was a flood prevention museum and instead it got taken out by a mudslide

Nimnom 2008-06-21 11:09:34 PM
Hollie Maea

There's no major water bodies in Iowa.

Crazy Bacon Legs 2008-06-21 11:10:06 PM
I hear it's the most accurate museum of its type in the world.

What's this? On fark, a museum article that doesn't have anything to do with science or mythology - wow! wait...floods, Noah..oh no

or am I thinking of Idaho

I live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Here is a video of the historic flood that I made:

And then an old man drowned in that flood the day after winning the lottery.

I'd think that a museum flooding would be news...

TheBigJerk 2008-06-21 11:13:39 PM
Irony actually has a very vague and wide-ranging definition.

Hollie Maea 2008-06-21 11:14:31 PM
Nimnom: There's no major water bodies in Iowa.

Ok...that's not the response I was expecting. Is that a line from a movie that I'm missing? Or are you just trolling? Certainly the continent's largest river does not form the entire eastern border of the state, and there are definitely not any significant tributaries of that river that cross the state.

Or something.

amanogowa 2008-06-21 11:16:25 PM
Subby fails.

It is always news when a museum floods. Not only that, but how does a location getting flooded in a state where every river is currently flooding to record levels make it news? I would think that the shear numbers of buildings flooded, including many many museums in the state of Iowa would make it less of a news item...

BigSnatch: FTA: The flood of 1993 was thought to be a once-in-a-lifetime event for residents of Fort Madison, Iowa.

Indeed -- most people do not expect to see multiple 100 year floods in their lifetime. Let alone a 100 and a 500-1500 (depending on who you ask) year flood.

Why is the world in love again?

Why are we marching hand in hand?

Why are the ocean levels rising up?

Hollie Maea: Bad execution of the "not news, news, fark" gimmick. How does the museum being in Iowa suddenly turn it from not news into news?

Should have gone:

"Not news: Building flooded in Iowa, News: It was a museum. Fark: It was 'The Flood Museum'"

I guess the subby got 1/3 right.
