I've never been a beer drinker myself, but I've sure served a few...and this has been a steady pattern for many years, it seems. More and more women AND men are ordering cocktails and wine.

St_Ides [TotalFark] 2008-06-21 07:25:58 PM
It's much easier to get wine here (Ontario) than beer or liquor. Wine can be bought at most grocery stores now, whereas liquor you need to go to the LCBO and beer you need to go to The Beer Store (yes, that's its actual name) or the LCBO (if you want something popular and less than a 24.

Sometimes I wish I liked wine, but I can't stand anything aged in a barrel (Don't know why, I just can't drink it.)

That's funny, since wine is usually stronger than beer although your beers are pretty strong. I used to really like that Brador beer.

Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick were the only two provinces to report higher volumes of white wine sales than reds, according to the study.

They eat more fish.

2.3 billion litres of ales, lagers and other brews

High Five!

For Canadians aged 15 and over, per-capita wine sales amounted to $187 in 2006-2007 -- up almost $14 from the previous year.

I'm in the over. Unless that's per week.

There are far more people in British Columbia than those two provinces combined ... and there is a huge fishing industry there, too. Fish and other seafood is big on menus. So that theory doesn't hold water.
Tr0mBoNe: For Canadians aged 15 and over

An odd statistic, as the legal age for buying and consuming alcohol is 19 in most provinces (18 in one?)

No, it shows that people in the Atlantic provinces are smarter about wine than you guys out west.

Ha ... well stereotypes would have it that the east coasters are a bunch of beer and screech swilling sods.

It'd be interesting to know if that was the case. I would have bet the diet and palate of the west coast is more "refined" than the east.

I suppose it depends on where you live. Here in my little border town in Ontario, The Beer Store is a pretty popular place.

WINO'S.

So some morons think that a glass of wine is like fruit juice. And doesn't make you smell like a brewery. So they end up drinking more. And really get pissed quicker without realizing that fact. It's only harmless wine you know.

Wine ad's in Ontario(showing on a national TV channel), have slogans, such as. "Summer is Short, so drink more wine."

/Open the bottle and you have to finish all off, as it will not last longer than a couple of hours.
//Or thats what some people think.
///Have a bottle or can of beer and know your limit.

Renovation shows from Ontario. They redo a bathroom. And the first thing when the homeowner see's the big ass tub.. Wine. Wine. WINE. Right here for my Therapeutic Bubble bath. And all the tables are setup with a bottle and two glasses in all the magazines. I know alcohol is a big problem in Ontario, but they need some restrictions on the drunkenness in their media.

buzzvert: As life becomes more and more depressing, people seek out liquids with higer alcohol content.

Not to be rude, but the 'russian' vodka (thank god you spelled it right, honestly) consumption rate has nothing to do with 'life'.

Look at the general consumption rates for non-US societies. Look at the consumption rates of 'old world' places. Examine drinking and eating habbits, compared to regional stuff.

You'll find Europeans drink more, regulary, without getting shiatfaced (like americans); most people consider a meal uncomplete without alcohol. Russia just has a leg up, since you can stuff your booze out the window and it's freezed.

jst3p: Nothing against beer or beer drinkers, I just never developed a taste for it. I do find wine very appealing. I am on my way to becoming a wine snob, but I have some work to do yet.

Actually, if you discard the snob aspect, beer pairs better with food than wine, because of its lower abv; you can take a sip, cleanse your pallette, and still farking taste something. Wine, you might as well give up the pretense, and sip grain alcohol to 'cleanse the pallette'.

Beer is viewed with contempt because it is easy to make, inexpensive, and can be easily made with a few hundred flavors.

Here's the formula:

Only as many beers as you have fingers left and halve that number for Vicodins you consume, thus 9 fingers = 4.5 beers and 2.25 vikes. etc.

I'm not sure if this is really that relevant to beer sales on the whole. For one thing, it doesn't cover bar sales and cold beer and wine store sales, only sales at the liquor boards.

That means it's missing almost all all Quebec beer sales, which are nearly all through grocery stores and corner store-type retailers; these same stores can't sell high-quality wine, only shiatty wine blends. That means if you want a bottle of wine (even cheap wine), you go to a liquor store, since the grocery store stuff is almost undrinkable and you can actually find cheaper, better wine at the liquor store; if you want a case of beer, you go to the corner store, because the liquor stores barely even bother to stock beer (they offer a very limited selection, particularly of cold beers, so your chances are likely that you'll find maybe three or four types of beer in the cooler and like 200 bottles of wine.)

This survey also doesn't include the flourishing brewpubs that are popular all across Canada and I'd estimate represent a fairly substantial percentage of the market.

The real story in that article is that liquor sales are down. Now this is interesting because unlike beer, which in most provinces (Ontario excepted) you can buy at non-provincial stores, I think across the country you can only get liquor in liquor stores. Diminishing liquor sales might actually be a *better* indication that wine is growing in popularity. In my exhaustive research of this subject in bars *cough* the proportion of beer:wine:liquor hasn't changed at all, and if anything I see more women drinking local microbrews.

Ok, that's rare. I've seen people drinking Vietnamese snake wine and some shiat that was by all accounts distilled in a peasant's bathtub in Ecuador, but no mead yet.

In my expert opinion as a Canadian who has just started to drink wine regularly I'd have to say that I still drink a metric shiat-load of beer (the standard Canadian measure for beer). No cocktails though, just beer, wine and whiskey please.
