CompuCredit has based these credit line reductions on an undisclosed "behavioral" scoring model that penalized consumers for using their cards for certain types of transactions, including transactions touted in their solicitation materials such as cash advances and transactions with the following types of merchants

• Direct marketing merchants
• Marriage counselors
• Personal counselors
• Automobile tire retreading and repair shops
• Bars and night clubs
• Pool and billiard establishments
• Pawn shops
• Massage parlors.

What TFA doesn't say is that the credit card companies send all that data to the Feds, who are reducing your citizenship score accordingly.

Indeed. Financial privacy is nonexistent in the United States, and the number one violator, by far, of financial privacy is the Federal government.

People need to keep this shiat in mind as we move closer and closer to a cashless society. Expect it to get out of control once the merger between the US Government and Corporate America is finally complete.

Well, as long as it's not the government directly doing it to me, I'm totally fine with this egregious invasion of privacy and limitation of personal choice.

WTF?

Tell ya what, I would cign up for an opt out so if my card was used at a place I put on the list, it would be no good.
A place I would not shop at.
A place a credit card thief would use it at.
But I get to pick the places.
RNC donations come to mind.
Denny's', Hooters, any strip club.
But I get to pick the places.
Also, if you want me to subscribe to your sat TV, you best let me opt out of any channel I pick.

Shut up about my wine in a box. One, it hurts my feelings. Two, I don't want my friend P. Taylor Jamison at Capital One to hear that I drink wine in a box--he might stop sending me those fawning letters begging me to take a cash advance.

Seriously, Whats the deal with tire retreading shops... are they a cover for something cool I have never heard about?

Irresponsible lenders punishing irresponsible debtors. To think anyone's learned something from this subprime mess is encouraging. We'll see how long the shareholders of Master Card and Visa stand for this nonsensible action from the credit card companies.

I said the same thing when I read "Tire Retread Shops." I've never heard of one, and I'm old.

As a creditor myself, I would like to add to that list:

Those who have purchased tattoos or piercings
Those who have purchased pit bulls
Those who have purchased grow lights
Those who have purchased corona beer
and lots more

Yeah, really. Something cool has got to be happening at those places if big bro is getting upset you're spending his money there.

It's called data mining, and the science of it is very interesting.

It is an area of computer science based upon the premise of farking as much of your privacy as possible and using the result to build a model to predict the future.

The feds do it to everything to try and find terrorists. I'm certain any information you've ever heard about them collecting is only the tip of the ice berg.

Just came here to say that I hate the word subprime. If it's not prime, it's not prime. There's no near or sub. It's called regular or worse.

He may have meant debit. Which I personally have no problem with. Most debit cards now have all the same protections as regular cards.

Anyone who actually borrows on their credit card fails epically.

Want privacy? Buy everything in cash.

I think they are saying typically only really poor people who probably won't pay back their debt would get tires re-treaded. It's not something people with good spending habits typically do.

That's all well and good, but what if you want to buy something that costs in excess of $10,000? Having that much cash on you is not allowed in this country. You will have it seized as "excess cash" and have to prove it wasn't from illicit activity in order to get it back.

Is paying for a massage with a credit card the same as using a credit card to buy cocaine from your dealer? I wouldn't even use a cc in a strip club, especially because of all the horror stories you hear about overcharges.

XiaoGui 2008-06-22 12:11:56 AM
Tire retread shops do just that, they put treads back on worn-out tires and is on par with buying used tires. My guess is that they figure if you can't afford new tires you are a poor credit risk.

@Encephlavator
I have tattoos and piercings and my credit score is around 800.

So the very banks and cc companies that are monitoring your purchase activity can't track a check either?

I guess that's fair enough. Clarity of speech people. It limits the amount of confusion in the world.

See that same logic would work for the debate about genetic testing and health insurance:

You want them to pay for your healthcare if you get sick or injured? Then they have the right to know everything affecting the health of the life you're spending THEIR money on.

There is something amusing about Farkers turning their nose up at boxed wine.

Besides economy, boxed wine stays fresh longer and is convenient for drinking small amounts over an extended period.

There are some excellent deals to be found in a box. Pretty much any Australian red will be good. Delicato Shiraz is is very good. And for all the non-Merlot haters, try Hardy's Merlot.

You insult me because I have good credit or because I have a tattoo and piercings? Maybe it is just that the combination turns you on and your thoughts turn dirty.

While I can see bars being on the list if someone is going and running up a big tab 4 or 5 times a week, I really prefer to run a tab on a card on the rare occasion that I go out as opposed to carrying a lot of cash.

Of course, the company in TFA was profiling people that it gave "subprime" cards to, people who probably shouldn't have been approved for any credit in the first place. So profiling or no, I'm glad the feds are deciding to come down on them.

I (as well as many of you) use my MasterMoney card for ATM/Credit Card Purchases. I wonder if these are also tracked for the same purpose, even though they are cash purchases.

I was simply responding to an individuals comment about credit worthiness. You're the one who got panties in a bunch and was reduced to petty insults, sweet cheeks.
