meh. There's a new building going up in Chicago that will be taller than either one. The last number I heard is 2,000 feet, and it looks like a giant steel dildo.

And of course, everyone is forgetting the WTC replacement tower, currently being built, that is supposed to rise to 1776 feet.

America's Largest Target?

Their Superstores are pretty big, but they have nothing on Wal-Mart

Sorry, Philly. 1,500 feet isn't going to cut it.

The Chicago Spire is already under construction -- 2,000 feet (Linky)

I'm just glad they're building the Chicago Spire, can't wait til they start putting in actual above ground structure. Going to be so cool to watch it go up.

BunkyBrewman [TotalFark] 2008-06-21 06:23:04 PM
We're not in a competition with other cities. Anyone can build a giant penis structure, this one will have character. And if that's something we know about in Philadelphia, it's character(s).

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-06-21 06:26:37 PM
BunkyBrewman: his one will have character

character is what the Chicago Spire has, namely by not being any sort of box or modification of a box.

KarmicDisaster 2008-06-21 06:27:00 PM
People make fun of it, but I like Target just fine, better than Wal-mart anyway.

It's a pretty stupid idea to build a massive office building in a city/state with a high level of unemployment. Unless of course, you enjoy having a massive building with nobody in it.

France successfully thwarted hijackers who intended to crash a plane with 236 people into the Eiffel tower.

So it's still a bigger target, but their President was/is more responsible.

P.S.
Happened in 1994 when people could still say, "who would have ever thought someone who crash a plane into a building as a terrorist attack"

It was a farking joke about the stigma behind Philly people. Chill the fark out. Furthermore, since you're quick to pull stats you should also note that Philadelphia's unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted.

It's amazing that, if anything, 9/11 has sparked another skyscraper boon, rather than ending it completely. Prolly has more to do with increased urbanization than anything.

Onager: Ayn Rand is a horrible author.

I actually like her writing but that's because I take it as fiction, full of fictional characters, fictional behaviors, and fictional econmic situations. She was a fan of O.Henry and his sense of humor shows up in her work from time to time, which I enjoy.

My big problem with Howard Roark is that he blew up a building that wasn't his. He whined in court like a baby about his payment being not money but seeing his vision realized. When the building wasn't built his way, he felt he had the right to destroy it. Problem is, his agreement to have the building built his way and only his way was between him and Keating. Those who built the building didn't enter into a contract with Roark. He had had a right to sue the hell out of Keating for not living up to his end of the contract but he didn't have the right to blow up someone else's building.

Oh, and it is obvious from The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, Red Pawn and many of her other works that she had quite a thing for love triangles... and rape fantasies. Her real life involvement in a love triangle is well knows... as for the rape fantasy, well, we may never know if that was something she was into or just something she liked for her fictional characters.

Certainly everyone is entited to their opinion about her writing but I find often people who disagree with her philosophy will take cheap shots at the technical and artistic merits of her writing. Some of them have valid points but mostly it comes off as critisism because of a dislike of Objectivism instead of a true dislike of her writing ability.

/Ayn deserves the Golden Strawman Award.

It is actually quite related... it is the curse of William Penn you see.

EngineerAU: /Ayn deserves the Golden Strawman Award.

I agree that she was not a horrible author like Onager says. But her best was not Atlas Shrugged or the Fountainhead, it was We The Living.

I WAS all ready to launch into a philosophical discussion of the pros and cons of Objectivism, but then I remembered, this is Fark.
