I'm betting that moron gets fired.

Do you know how much it would have cost the station if she was hurt, or killed, even if the station was not held liable?

Most places I know of, will fire you if you do not give in to a robber's demands.

The list of justified reasons is endless.

Needs dumbass tag. If you work as a clerk you should never try any heroics, especially over something stupid like this. Good way to get yourself killed.

This. Why in the WORLD is she being punished for driveoffs? It's not her fault.

I worked at a gas station in high school. Driveoffs were grounds for being written up or fired. This is in a station with poor visibility and no video cameras. Good policies abounded at that shiathole...

Yeah srsly. Working night shift at a grocery during college, it was frustrating that the store really just wanted us to make a nominal effort to stop beer thieves (which were incredibly common after dark). We basically made getting from the booze aisle to the exit without going through a checkout lane an obstacle course, but even still, we weren't to do much more than impede them, and couldn't persue once they got outside. Nevertheless catching them without getting fired became something of a sport and the local cops working the graveyard shift new us all by name.

Good times... I think...

So she hopped inside the car as the man drove off. She got out a block away.

So, I imagine that block long conversation had some awkward silences...

Well he stole $30 worth of gas, she probably thought he'd have to stop at another station soon.

She's a dumbass, but what's with the bonuses being tied to driveoffs? Can someone who's worked at a gas station explain for the confused?

It's called "billing you for acts of theft, which, we'd rather you not try and prevent and, therefore, covering our asses and not losing a penny."

She crossed the line between brave and stupid, but she shouldn't be fired for it. She was lucky; up here in BC, some gas jockey got ran over and killed when he tried to stop some drunk teen from doing a gas'n'dash. Now we have a law saying you must prepay for gas before you pump it.

ttc2301 2008-06-21 08:54:42 PM
Some station owners withhold driveoffs and other losses from the cashier's paycheck. This kid is lucky that it just hits her bonus.

In all jurisdictions of which I'm aware, you cannot dock an employee for shortages. Fire 'em, sure, but not take it out of their pay.

My guess is that this is a less direct issue; the bonus is tied to profit, and a drive off that costs the station $80 digs into profit, which for an individual station runs along the lines of 1 cent per gallon. Gotta sell 8,000 gallons to get back to the break even point.

Jashter [TotalFark] 2008-06-21 09:26:36 PM
Wouldn't be easier on everyone if the station in question just made everyone pre-pay?

Every gas station in the town I live in has now switched to this, and as such experience no drive-offs.

With the fuel cost climate as it is, I'm surprised there are still places that let you pump fuel, *then* pay for it.

Very small town, and the customer had been in two times the week before...>

Well, I'm assuming that the gas station attendants bonuses are a certain percentage of the station profits for the month. Since thefts reduce the overall profit of the station, is figures that it should also reduce the bonuses.

The article didn't say that she had to pay for the theft, only that it reduced per bonus. If they're taking the full $30 our of her bonus, that's farking ridiculous, but if it simply reduces everybody's bonus in the same proportion as it reduces the profits for the owner, that makes sense.

Lamune_Baba 2008-06-21 09:44:17 PM
I love how people will still jump to defend the criminal.

Never mind the fact that the stores find themselves blameless, hiding behind their policies.
Sure, you're not supposed to try to stop crime. Just let them walk away with anything they want! It's OK- we'll just be taking the losses out of your check anyway!

It's a damn shame she didn't have one of those cute little .38 snubnoses in her pocket. Sure, she'd need a shower after filling the car with a fine mist of brain and skull, but she'd have removed yet another worthless parasite from society.

But then employees wouldn't have to choose between risking their lives or losing a bonus. Silly you.

I don't get it. Is there some sort of pun or joke?

Or are you kids all on dope?

WFern 2008-06-21 11:27:51 PM
I'm honestly surprised that drive-offs ONLY impacted her bonus. I work for a rental agency that contracts through a local station for cleaning and fillup and the manager can be a hardass in this regard. The employees who "lose" any form of company money have the total sum substracted from their paychecks (this typically involves the rare instance of providing a customer with more gas than what they requested - some poor SOB lost an entire day's pay recently).

Why is no one upset about the oil companies doing a drive-off with all of our cash - $4.25+ per gallon?

I wonder what the conversation was like in the car ride? Did they just share an akward silence before she finally got out, or was there some back and forth conversational hilarity going on. Maybe it was like Buffalo '66ish. She wanted him.
