If the town incorporated as a public entity, and therefore get tax money from the county, state and federal government, (which means me), then hell yeah they should remove that stuff.

If they want to keep it, they should un-incorporate and then go private. Then they can hang all the crosses they want. Or even burn them if they want to.

I dunno about the plaintiffs story, but nice guy or dick head, it doesn't matter he is right.

If he gets that right, then Christians can sue Atheists for not displaying a cross.

Not even remotely close. Try again.

Ummm, no. The point of the lawsuit is that religious symbols on public property implies an endorsement of that religion by the government, which is a big no-no.

If a politician sets up a Nativity display on his house, that's fine (provided ot was purchased with his/her own money and not [embezzled] taxpayer money). On the other hand, a cross on City Hall is a lawsuit waiting to happen, for the same reason if it was a Star of David or a Cresent instead of a cross.

That makes so little sense, it's like anti-sense. It's like a black-hole of stupidity that sucks up all stupid in the area and smashes it into one super-condensed pill of retardedness, which then explodes in a supernova of dumb.

No, they can only do that if the atheists display the international symbol of atheism: an aborted fetus impaled on a gay man's cock while smoking a joint.

Yeah, or people could just not care.

That said, Frankenmuth is the tackiest little slice of Germania-wannabe tourist trappiness I've ever seen, and being from northern MI, I've seen my fair share.

I think the real question is: What kind of deranged individual would move to Frankenmuth?

He's not an atheist, he's a moron.

We do not live in a theocracy. You do not have the right to force your religion on everybody else. Get over it. If you don't like it, contemplate how you would react to a local ordinance compelling you to pray to Mecca six times a day.

JohanW 2008-06-21 04:06:43 PM
He is 100% in the right. The dumbass tag should be for the people who spent taxpayer money on religious propaganda.

It's part of the history of the town. Ignore it like a big boy.

I didn't realize anyone could live in Frankenmouth.

Only thing I saw there was hotels, a chicken shack and Santa Claus.

Didn't see a lot of houses.

Please explain how the tard in question was forced to pray to any god or engage in religion otherwise.

j0ndas 2008-06-21 04:08:37 PM
There are a host of things we ought to be able to sue atheists over, but the court system only swings one way. Gays good, religion bad. Abortion good, religion bad. Etc. At the absolute most, you should only be allowed to sue if the town put up the religious symbols after you moved in.

In this case, most of the religious symbols are probably old enough to qualify as historical, which is also a protected class.

countvonbob 2008-06-21 04:08:44 PM
Also, this asshat helped screw over the few liberals in MI that might have been receptive to listening to him - when he helped screw the Dems out of control of the MI Senate.

Are the evangelical atheists here yet? Atheism is fine, but whiny atheists are just as obnoxious as whiny Christians. And while separation of church and state is one of most important aspects of our government, it's a lot less big of a deal at the township level.

What kind of idiot moves to a small town and starts suing up the place? I think that the crosses shouldn't be there either, but w/e damage he feels is being cause to him is nothing compared to the hostility he will bring against his own stupid ass.

/thinks the crosses shouldn't go
//wouldn't disrupt a small town with lawsuits

I say we round up the most annoying representatives of both views and force them to fight it out in a giant steel cage full of sex-starved rabid baboons.

Fluffy_the_cactus: Yeah, or people could just not care.

One thousand times THIS.

What is it about athiests freaking out over the cross? Especially in this case where it's representational of the history of the town.

How about he moves to India next then complains about all the multi-armed god statues hanging around the place? Or to Israel and biatches about the Star of David being displayed? ON THE FLAG.

Religious symbols are everywhere in the world. They don't only represent the religion itself. They represent the culture, and the history of the area. Regardless of what religion you are (or are not), tolerance of religious displays should be possible for you to handle.

Especially moving into an area where you know them to be abundant. I wouldn't move to the south for all the confederate flags all over the place; not move and then sue because I'm offended by them. Cripes.

jaylectricity [TotalFark] 2008-06-21 04:11:45 PM
If you're cognizant to recognize that you don't like the cross and its implications, you're cognizant enough to resist the brainwashing.

This is what happens when you get your morals from an old book designed for stealing from idiots.

bill3rd 2008-06-21 04:13:11 PM
I propose a compromise: let's replace the crosses with statues of Christ, but it has to be the Buddy Christ in leiderhosen. I only live 10 minutes away, and I'd actually visit Frankenmuth if that happened.

The day the Scientologists take over the government and use it to enforce their religion, they'll be the brunt of the counterattack.

So I could go to Rome or another city like it and start suing because of the religious/empire influence of the city's architecture? How 'bout Salem? Could I get away with suing to have all the "Witch Trial" stuff removed from the city?

/Americans forget we DO NO have the right to NOT be offended.

It's called "Implied endorsement of religion by the government." I'm sure you wouldn't be too keen if they passed a law banning bacon because it is "unclean."

That's either the best(or more likely) the worst idea for a photoshop contest I've ever heard.

Hell, I don't even believe in god and I think this guy is an asshat. I don't see a cross and go "Oh noes, I'm being oppressed!" It's just as asinine as fundamentalist Christians being offended at the idea of gay marriage, or even the mere sight of teh gheys.

Yes, I find both groups equally loathsome.

Some people just like stirring the pot. This guy seems like that kind of guy.

KOOLmike 2008-06-21 04:15:10 PM
What a dick. If he's an atheist, those religious symbols should mean NOTHING to him. It figures that a zealous atheist would be just as big a douchebag as a Christian fundie or any other extremist for that matter.

Zender's FTW!

Because we've a great deal of Hindi in our local governments erecting statues of Lord Krishna through the use of taxes to place outside of courts.

Please, be less stupid

vinraith 2008-06-21 04:16:10 PM
You know, I'm an atheist, and this kind of thing just embarrasses the shiat out of me. I can't imagine caring about something like this, and can't imagine why someone that lacks a belief in god would be willing to put so much effort into something so trivial. Legislating morality, trying to force creationism into the science classroom, these are things to be upset about. Crosses? Legally he may be in the right but seriously, who gives a fark?
