Assholes.

I don't really have a dog, but my cat was getting kind of heavy and now he gets just a little less than the recommended amount of food per day until a month from now when he's got another checkup and the vet says he's lost some weight.

/proud of being a good pet owner
//I better be, since I got the cat from a guy at work, and his dad is my vet.

I wish my dog would gain a little weight. Every summer she barely touches her food. In the winter she eats two or three times more and I can see some of her ribs. In the summer I can see ALL of her ribs. She looks like an Auschwitz hound right now. I am not starving her I promise! She still trots for an hour or so at a stretch on our daily walks, and she has plenty of energy, but she is as ribby looking as a greyhound right now.

Look, indulging your pets is fine. OK, you're going a little overboard with that crap he/she shouldn't be eating.

But don't let me hear that any of you have shelled out the green to take your dog to a "pet psychologist." Seriously, WTF?

Bonus points if any of you are pet psychologists.

Drunken disorder plagues Midsummer

Midsummer celebrations were typified by drunken revelry, fighting, assault, drink driving, an alleged rape and three shootings. Calmer than usual, police report.

FTA: "Dogs have previously been treated the traditional way - with exercise and a change of diet, but according to the manufacturer of a new diet treatment this has proved ineffective in some 60 percent of cases, Dagens Nyheter reports."

Sounds like the dogs are developing diabetes and it's messing with their body chemistry. Get that handled quickly and they may save most dogs going back to traditional diet and exercise.

I have a friend who's 5'2" and weighs 300 pounds, her dog is a golden lab who weighs 110, the poor thing is gasping by the time he makes it to the water bowl, she's on medication of Type II diabetes, duh.

It's no coincidence. If you're dog is fat, you're not getting enough friggin' exercise.

Well, yeah, they're getting heavy, because a good 80% of the dog food you find in your local Pet Smart is chock-full of little corn pellets packed with bone meal, coated with a half-hearted layer of vitamins to sort-of meet some kind of uninforced nutrition standard and animal digest to make it taste good. It's like feeding your kid nothing but Doritos and expecting them to grow up healthy and a reasonable weight. Unless your dog gets big workout every single day and his diet is supplimented with food that has actual nutrition, your dog is going to be a fat diabetic sack of lard.

/corn
//wheat
///soy
////If you see any of these three things in the first five ingredients on the back of what you feed your dog, you're feeding your dog shiat.

I have parented cats in the past, though, and probably will again someday.

If you have a nice big pot, you can make your dog's food yourself. Just find a local fishery or butcher you can get scraps from for cheap, and slow-cook it with rice, carrots, and brewer's yeast in a big pot. Cheaper than bagged dog food, and a hell of a lot healthier for your dog(s).

/wishes he had a dog. Local market sells salmon ends and pieces cheap, which would be perfect for dog food.

Some of them may have the problem I used to have.

I had a fat dog and slender dog. The fat dog was a gobbler, and the slender dog was a nibbler.

Food got put out and she wolfed her food down, he would've nibbled at his all day long... but of course, she'd wolf his down too.

It may sound as simple as separating them, but short of building individual pens and keeping them in them all day, it's kind of tough to do.

You couldn't force him to eat, and you couldn't make her stop eating his.

You'd think that it work itself out, that he'd start eating faster because he was hungry from the previous day, but he never did.

I never did solve it, so I just killed them both and got a new dog.

(just kidding... I only killed one of them. The other died moments before I could finish her off)
(seriously)

Who knew self-righteousness would become a marketing guy's best friend?

One of the aforementioned dogs was a golden-lab mix who lived to be nearly 18 years old... a long life for any dog, but particularly long for a larger breed. Moreover, he was happy spry and active right up to the end.

He never ate anything but Ol' Roy Premium from Wal-Mart.

Also had a Peke-a-Poo, he lived to be 19... and survived being lost and stuck in a drainage ditch for 10 days in the middle of December.

He was also an Ol' Roy pup.

I feed my new dog Eukanuba, but I just checked the ingredients, and even it doesn't mean your standards.

technicolor-misfit 2008-06-21 10:06:02 PM
Oh... and he was nearly 17 years old when he got lost and stuck in the drainage ditch.

Oh, and it's not believed that either of them died of natural causes. They all appeared to have been poisoned.

3 dogs... they all died within a span of about 4 weeks. The golden-lab mix was put down to end his suffering, the peke-a-poo died in his sleep, and the other lab died moments before being put down.

Then I grossly underestimated her dog's weight by at least 50 pounds - and which might also mean my 5'2" friend weighs 350 instead of 300, jeebuz.

I find tapeworms to be pretty effective at reducing a dog's weight.

When they're back to ideal weight, feed him a worm killer and out with the rest of the turds it goes.

Shenanigans! 2008-06-21 10:34:58 PM
Our dog put on a few pounds as he was transitioning from puppyhood to adulthood. We tried low-calorie dog food, and he did not react well to it - dry flaky skin, etc.

We switched him back to his regular food, reduced his daily portion and added a vitamin, and now he's the fittest beagle at the dog park after losing 10 pounds - 1/4 of his body weight!

He gets 1 3/4 cup of food a day and has fabulous muscle tone (pic in my profile). We love our pup, but if we let him ate whatever he wanted, he'd look like those fatties above and wouldn't be able to jump into the back of my car to go to the dog park anymore.

Yeah. The problem isn't in the dog's head. The problem is not realizing that the dog, despite being a domesticated animal, still has instincts that wild dogs do, like eat everything you can get, because who knows when you're going to eat again. To be honest, I think that's a problem with a lot of people too (though not all, people actually are capable of having psychological problems with food of one variety or another; I suppose dogs are too, but it's likely related to an event like mom or dad goes away for a while).

Yeah, its just farked up how people overfeed their dogs.

Friend of mine adopted an overweight bugle and they were feeding it using the chart on the food bag based on its current weight -- not its appropriate weight. He was feeding the damned dog more food than my active 70 lb Lab gets. No wonder he never slimmed down.

Used to see a Rotty at the dog park that had to weigh well over 200 lbs -- looked like a watermelon with toothpick legs. Owner claimed it was losing weight, but it always looked the same to me.

Found her in our neighborhood a couple weeks ago, took care of her for a week, but we couldn't keep her (allergies, lease)

But the neighbors offered to take her, so now we've got "joint custody" :D

I've grown to realize how folks can get so attached to their pets!
