The sad thing is that the headline is probably accurate.

If you ever want to test the limits of your patience, try directing traffic for a couple hours.

as someone who crosses intersections, i'm getting a kick out of these comments.

where he forced open a locker and stole a uniform.

Greeting other officers as he left the station, he then went on "patrol," directing traffic in the town centre, the Catalan daily Segre reported.

I think the cops should be charged with impersonating officers.. Shiat

Guy does a public service, FOR FREE, and this is how they treat him.

/would never direct traffic

Everyone I've seen directing traffic in the US is utterly ignorant. They let one car through at a time, stop the one behind it and switch to a new lane, making everyone wait several minutes to get through... when if they let long lines of cars through (so most people would go through at faster than 1mph eventually) then everyone would spend much less time waiting.

Never, ever done that on a scene, and I have chewed people out for doing this. My big issue is when you do let the cars through, and they rubberneck and cause a whole new set of problems.

Or they stop and ask what happened. My GAWD that is annoying.

THIS.

Ten minutes of it for any of the next 100 knotheads who come in here to complain and I guarantee that they'll all be talking to themselves. I don't know of any other activity that just should not be done by human beings under any circumstances.

For more fun, try blocking off a street for a legitimate reason like construction, an accident or fire, ETC.

/'but I only know how to get home THIS WAY!'
//or the ever popular 'what happened?' while you're trying to keep from getting yourself flattened

He was also given away by how he didn't whine about how hard it was to do.

I like how, in a story about a man with mental illness directing traffic, the related picture is of an actual Spanish traffic controller.

I've never seen a traffic cop do that. They usually let the longest line of cars go through, then they wait for a break in traffic. So if you're slagging behind by more than a couple car lengths he'll take that opportunity to stop you and change directions.

RTFA. He did break into a police station locker room and steal a uniform...

And that's...good? Forced to choose between laid back cop who waves me and the armed robber in the next car through with a smile and grim cop who follows through with unpleasantness in an effort to keep the hot side hot and the cold side cold, so to speak, I'll take my (improved) chances with the bitter one.

Unless they're strippers. In that case, smile on, sultry one, smile on.

The sad thing is that the headline is probably accurate.

As a Spainland dweller I can confirm this. Whenever there's big queues of traffic around here you can bet a traffic light broke or something and they sent in a policeman to direct the traffic.

Salacious Salad: Spanish cops are way more laid back than American cops

There's two levels of cops here in Spain, "Policia Local" (local) and "Guardia Civil" (national).

The local guys are pretty laid back. La Guardia ... not so much.

supertoad 2008-06-21 03:30:28 PM
you don't need a police uniform to direct traffic. just a safety vest.

i've directed traffic a few times. closed off the end of main street once, just for fun. the hardest part is keeping a straight face when you are waving for cops to turn around and take a detour.

haxtor 2008-06-21 03:43:44 PM
I'm an American working in Spain, and there is a guy here in Madrid --dressed as a cross between Ronald McDonald and a cow, who directs traffic here (by the Opera metro stop).

So there was this red-headed chick who used to sell flowers at a busy intersection by wearing micro-shorts and a tank top, while spinning around on roller-skates and pointing her bouquets (one in each hand) emphatically at all the people who drove by. Hard to describe, but anyway... she directed traffic. To a dead stop.
Has nothing to do with this, but it's the first thing I thought of.

/Now you're thinking of her too
//Why no, i did not go out of my way to avoid that busy intersection.

This reminds me of Trigger Happy TV's skits where they'd stop traffic for various reasons. Seeing as nothing is obscure on Fark, someone must know what I'm talking about.

What gets me is that most of the people I encounter have no idea of the rules of directing traffic nor do the other drivers. The front an the back of the director is STOP and the sides are GO. The director should be turning his body to the correct orientation as he is performing his directing. Facing me with your body and directing me through is ignorant. Do they not train these people?

Sounds like Italy. When I was there for three months, a local told me that farking with the Polizia was a traditional Italian pastime. farking with the quasi-military national Carabinieri would get your ass shot.

Every time I see someone directing traffic I want to buy them a cold one.

They get beeped at, they get yelled at, they are in constant danger of being run over, and they keep assholes from blocking the freaking intersection.

HERO.

Subby fails. Try directing traffic in a big city for hours, while people try to run over you, throw garbage at you, don't follow direction, and curse at you.

/I'm sure that you would be in a great mood after a couple of hours.
