(Wired) Obvious R.E.M's Michael Stipe claims that although videos once changed the music industry, it is now a dead format replaced by the internet: "I think anyone who refutes that is an idiot in 2008"   (blog.wired.com) divider line 33

If that's true, then it's a sad day.

Watching some high school idiots poorly lip-synching a song with intercut images of poorly shot home videos is no replacement for the slick innovation of a Michel Gondry video.

About 90% of bootleg concert recordings on YouTube should be taken down for aesthetic reasons.

That clip of "Harbor Coat" brought back some great memories.

I always hated videos, partly contributing in making listeners lazier and lazier

or as Lewis Black said: "Why would you hire MTV to do music? MTV has nothing to do with music, ok? MTV is to music as KFC is to chicken. MTV is video, and video goes where? In your eye, music goes in your ear. Ear eye, eye ear, big ****ing difference! "

Don't people watch videos on the internet?

What would Gibby Haynes say?

(Crappy camera work...great tune)

I dunno - a video could still be a good introduction to a band you're unfamiliar with.

Yes, but I think what Stipe is saying is that people now look to the Internet for videos, not the television set.

I noticed through the crappy video that this isn't Butthole Surfers.... then I remembered he formed a band called "P" for about 3 seconds. Didnt see johnny depp though

The surfers do a great cover of REM "to the one i Love" on their double live album, I believe its available for free on their site

Not sure what lineup that was. Are you familiar with the Surfer's tour van story (in relation to Stipe)?

he's not completely wrong.

But hey, at least MTV hasn't been showing music videos for 15 years now, so no loss for them.

Heard years ago they filled their tour bus full of garbage and drove it to Athen, and set it on fire on MIcheal's lawn??? is that accurate?

It's not the Internet's fault that MTV quit showing music videos.

I remember the story being in Rolling Stone and after a little searching I found the story as I recall it:

They were apparently obsessed with the REM frontman, presumably before his band's dropping of all musical standards and attendent rise to fame'n'fortune (or maybe not?). The Surfers' old tour van finally died, so they towed it to Stipe's house and left it outside, allegedly painting on the windscreen something along the lines of (quotes vary):
"Michael Stipe, despite the hype,
We'd like to suck on your long tall pipe"

I would've agreed a few years ago, but I think youtube has resurrected the music video. I always wondered why some bands would waste the money to make a video that would be seen no one until a video comp released on vhs, but youtube has made a much cheaper, and more readily available outlet for such acts.

granted, the relevance of videos is less compared to music that is much more easily accessible (in terms of ability to seek out and find said music)

Michael Stipe?

He's still alive? AND trying to be relevent?

The most pretenious has-been popular musician ever.

AND he's GAY?

Now isn't THAT a surprise...

I loved the early days of music videos when it was just the band playing the song with no special effects ( a lot of Queen's early stuff is like that).

This word "refute", it does not mean what he seems to think it means.

Or about 90% of other people who use it, either.

But at least it's good that there are things you can depend on here, right?

Back in 2001 when they were shooting the "Imitation of Life" video, Michael Stipe discussed in an MTV interview how he felt that music videos were a dead medium. At least he has kept his story straight.

Music videos suck. All of them.

Michael Stipe's Athens house, that he's had since the early 80s, has no "lawn"; it's a rather small place off Prince Ave., very close to the surrounding houses, with a small patch of bamboo between the road and the house, and the street has a short wall that lines the sidewalk. The driveway is on the side and leads to the back.

There's no way to drive a van onto "the lawn" and if you did set a car on fire there it would probably catch the house on fire too.

You gotta love Gibby but nothing like it ever happened. Just like R.E.M. never promised to break up at New Years 2000. Just lazy journalism and wishful thinking from the ADD generation.
