Remember when MTV played music?

That is still one of the most fun videos ever.

When we had MTV here in the mid-late 90s, it was awesome - cool presenters, mix of music, live performances, everything. It got cancelled within a year. It came back a few years back, and plays American reality shows all day, and I've never seen them once play a single music video. What happened?

Our current only free-to-air music channel is heading the same way. What gives?

Ever pick up on the early-mid 80's video meme of a singer (or band) just emotionally and psychologically tormenting a hot chick for 3-4 minutes?

Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More" part where they drugged her, turned her into a cake and ate her right in front of her kind of freaked me out.

That was just a slightly warped take off on Alice in Wonderland.

I could've sworn that at the end of the video, where he made a "twisting motion" to his glasses, the lenses fell out and waterfalls poured out of them.

There's no point to him doing the twisting motion without something happening (in the context of this video that is). I don't know what version is linked in this thread, but it isn't the original, which has something close to what you mention and what I remember seeing: Link (new window)

No idea why it was changed. Well, some ideas but they're all too stupid to believe as possible.

It must have been the Reagan-era backlash against 60s and 70s feminism.

This vid has held up pretty well. I remember MTV in the beginning. I wanted to date Martha Quinn but want to have sex with Nina Blackwood. The was JJ and I forget the skinny dudes names. But I didn't care for a lot of the music. I Ran bothered the hell out of me.

BadMotivator: I remember being wowed by these effects.

That was a classic. It looks pretty cheap now. I got a kick out of Weird Al's mockery:

Do they still make videos like this? You know, actually having some fun and not just dancing around?

There are some, but not as many as there used to be. Even the ones without all the dancing, aren't much fun. Then again the songs aren't exactly fun either.

I came here to say that. I don't like the Cars or that song very much, but the video work on that is absolutely farking amazing - way more impressing than the lameo stop-action on 'Sledgehammer' that was touted so highly at the time.

I might be recalling wrong, but I think everything in that video was pure analog engineering goodness - no digital equipment at all.

mfaby 2008-06-21 04:38:57 PM
That Cars video and The Cars in general were shiat.

Over-rated crap; bubble gum music for hipster-doofuses.

'Rolling Stone' loved those guys and that's reason enough to dislike them.

That video is my goto video when people talk about 80s videos and how the artists used to actually go beyond just a song. It's as if they are only concerned about the exposure.

"Remember back in 1984...."

1984/85 were the best years in music IMO. MTV still played music, although I never was able to watch it. Albums released (My opinion of albums of all time):

-Brothers In Arms -#1
-Born in the USA -#3
-Scarecrow -#5
-Centerfield -#6
-Private Dancer - Honerable Mention
-Building the Perfect Beast - Honerable Mention
