I'm not even looking at the page. I got a Rubik's Cube a few months ago for my birthday, and it took me a week to solve the thing, and that was with the help of the "seven easy steps" that you can find online.

I hate the damn thing.

I solved the M12 puzzle in about 30 seconds by more or less randomly hitting the Merge button and Invert once or twice.

Apparently one of these sporadic groups really is called the McLaughlin Group. And it's not just a joke; it really was discovered by a mathematician named McLaughlin.

Okay, so I can sort of understand how it works, but I'm too lazy to figure out exactly how to do it. I notice that repeated merging will guarantee that a number will get to a particular position- the problem is it screws up the other stuff. It's easy to get 1 in the first spot and 2 in the second; after that it's pretty damn hard. I suspect it's more like a Rubik's Cube where the goal is to get numbers in a spot that's not their "correct" position then perform a small sequence of moves that gets them into the right spot from there.

I'm just far too lazy to actually work it out.

No. Merge is described as a shuffle, but it's not a random shuffle.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12

After merging, this becomes
1 12 2 11 3 10 4 9 5 8 6 7.
Invert would make this become
7 6 8 5 9 4 10 3 11 2 12 1.

(The term "merge" annoys me because I'm a CS guy and I wanted to be able to pull off MergeSort.)

The goal is to figure out the sequence of moves that fixes it, much like a Rubik's cube.

Yeah, that threw me a bit, too. I thought it should be something with some order to it (otherwise we'd be playing an online lottery and not a game), but really couldn't muster up enough Care to take a second to figure out what it was.

MERGE (M) is a "card shuffle" best understood by trying it out.
