goddamn i love this band. that stretch from something else through lola vs powerman is amazing. they were 2nd ONLY to the beatles(the stones maybe a footnote at best). heres my picks for a quick youtube search if all youre familiar with is the popular shiat that most people are going to post in this thread that will not convert a single new fan:

johnny thunder-Link (new window)

some dave action-Link (new window)

and the best song on village green-Link (new window)

Another Kinkophile checking in.

Sure, "Village Green" and "Arthur" are great, but nobody's plugged "Muswell Hillbillies" yet. So, here's the first two from that one: "20th Century Man" and "Acute Paranoid Schizophrenia Blues".

The Kinks were great because they went from doing great concept albums to writing kickass singles. ramell got "Come Dancing," which is a remarkably clever song even apart from being tasty ear candy, but there's also stuff like "Do It Again", "Sleepwalker" and "Better Things" (can't find a Youtube for these). Arista has a pretty good "greatest hits" collection covering their singles period, so curious fans can grab that and then start working back through the concept albums of the '70s.

Didn't he get shot in the ass in New Orleans?

I love Muswell Hillbillies! The title cut is great too, as is "Alcohol" and "Have a Cuppa Tea." Really, the whole thing.

Yeah. He was hanging out there being a drunken jerk -- at least that's what I heard from old friends down there who were around him a bit. He tried to chase the guy who grabbed his girlfriend's purse and the dude literally popped a cap in his ass.

I've been listening all day. Here's a couple more:

Pictures In The Sand
Around The Dial

While the era 1964 through Lola v. Powerman was incredible, those two Preservation albums sucked donkey cock. Was so happy to hear them back to rock n' roll (but not as happy as Dave was apparently!) for part of Soap Opera and all of Schoolboys.

So from those last two concept albums pre-Arista/Sleepwalker:

Ducks on the Wall
I'm In Disgrace

/happily got to see the Sleepwalker tour and three others since, plus Ray solo

Oh come the fark on. 'Lola' needs to join the ranks of Songs Never to be Played by Mankind Again.

Christ on a stick, submissive. Why couldn't you have offered a link to a better and less worn tune like Do it Again?

mahavishnunj: some dave action-Link (new window)

A good one, maybe my favorite on that album. I always like it when a Dave song creeps onto a Kinks disc (see "Death of Clown" obviously).

Hey, something we agree on!

Wish there was a good clip of "I'm Not Like Everybody Else." The only one I found was a crappy audience clip of Ray doing it solo recently.

At the risk of supporting a troll, why the fark would you link the groups last and kinda lame hit over its/Ray's signature tune when referring to an artist with a better than 40 year performnce history?

After some consideration I led with the classic, and seeded the thread with a few more, farkmitters including you rounded out the offer. Ended up with a pretty good mix.

Thanks for playing, now go away

With a name like "JohnnyDanger" you know he's gotta be a rebel!

I'm just glad there's a thread for this at all.

Keep in mind while reading this anecdote that I like the Kinks but never knew any of their names.

I was part of a music message board in Nashville a couple of years ago and we did a "random mix cd exchange" kind of thing. I made mine for some guy and mailed it off, but the person who had my name never sent me anything. So I went on the message board and called him out "Hey Ray Davies, I'm talking to YOU. Get off your ass and make my mix cd! blah blah etc etc." Everybody else was quick to jump in "Dude!" "OMG" "He's writing an album/on tour/above your reproach".

I was all "Whoa", they must really like this guy Ray. So I googled him.
Hm.

Still not sorry for calling him out, he shouldn't have signed up if he didn't want to deliver. So, Ray Davies, if you're out there in Farkland, you totally owe me a mix CD!

And that's my Ray Davies story.

Bad submissive. Inane response.

Thx for your attention. Now go away and come back when you're more intelligent.

JohnnyDanger: Bad submissive. Inane response.

We were having a really civil thread. F*ck along, now.

Anyways, I'll vote "Village Green" as being one of the few albums good enough to surpass a few of the Beatles' records. They put out a live album a few years back called "To The Bone" that was one of the most engaging live albums I'd ever heard, too.

/my band's covering Waterloo Sunset and Set Me Free this weekend
//Ray is without a doubt one of the greatest songwriters of all time
///even if he and Dave are kind of dicks to each other
