This isn't that sweet.

Love it. Great song.

you know, i always though this was the guy who married aimee mann, and I thought, "cool." but then i checked and it was michael penn. who sucks.

I liked that song when it came out. I like it even more now or some reason. I liked his song "Girlfriend" as well.

Came in here to say this. Matthew Sweet could write a great pop song. He's almost like the happy Elliot Smith.

I love Matthew Sweet, and like this song, but this video looks like it was made for $13. It's pretty terrible.

This is a great song.

His In Reverse is one of the best albums that no one seems to know about...

MTV used to play music video?

Not to threadjack this, but I'm not really sure how one can like Aimee Mann and not like Michael Penn. As far as songwriting and musical style goes, they're cut from exactly the same cloth. Don't judge him just by that dopey one-hit "Romeo in black jeans" song from a few decades ago. I'm partial to the entire "Free For All" album, but check out some of these:

"Try"
"Long Way Down"
"Half Harvest"

I suppose you could say "I just like Aimee's voice," which is fair enough. Now listen to some of his songs and imagine her singing them. Weird, eh?

Matthew Sweet is a great songwriter. But Girlfriend is a far superior album. And his most frequent guitar sideman, Richard Lloyd (formerly of Television - pops) kicks ass.

/ rip bob quine

Richard Lloyd on lead guitar. 100% Fun is a pretty underrated record, all in all.

Yeah... not like anyone asked, though.

More recently, here he is with Susanna Hoffs doing "Different Drum." Putting it mildly, she appears to have aged a little better -- Matthew looks like he needs to lay off the sweets.

Sadly, too late for that. I foolishly assumed there might be some remote connection to the topic at hand, but no. For instance, it's not like they were ever on Space Ghost or anything like that.

Yarrgh 2008-06-20 09:54:18 PM
Ah Opeth, still brilliant, although they're getting tired in their sound. Their first three albums were genuine masterpieces; organic and pure, unfettered by over-production or experienced enough to repeat themselves yet. They're too melancholic too listen to for extended periods of time, although its difficult to resist. I'd recommend cleansing the palette with some Naglfar, Emperor or Gorgoroth afterwards, to get your head on straight.

Sorry on the threadjack

Aimee Mann doesn't really do it for me for some reason. She's not bad, I just can't get into her stuff.

Anyway, I like this song, and Girlfriend still gets rotation in my iPod.

theurge14: Matthew Sweet could write a great pop song.

Damn straight.

OK, to clear the air:

[1]DrBenway: You were right to call me on the threadjack. I happened to be listening to that clip at the time I stumbled upon this listing and I didn't fight the impulse to evangelize the tune that I really enjoyed. That said, block me if you will, I just love chatting about music.

[2]Yarrgh: To continue said threadjack: I beg to differ. I feel like the first two albums were merely an omen of things to come, and were not fully mature in composition and certainly not yet developed with respect to Michael's singing voice... which was quavering and heartfelt-yet-weak. That said, the latest album really loses the incredible nuance and subtlety of Lopez' drumming.

Ah, hell no. It's not like you put up a Rush link, now is it? Then I would've really shaken my tiny fist at you!

Well, I guess that eliminates your dear sweet mother, doesn't it then?

I was flipping channels late at night earlier this week and this video was being played on MuchMoreMusic ... on the "retro" show. 13 years old is retro? I'm not even 30 and that made me feel old. The video is cheap (or made to look that way), but still fun to watch.

wow, that was pure pwnage. frequent 4chan much?

if you were that offended that i was seriously inquiring about matthew sweet you must really like this song. which means you would be BLOWN AWAY by that song from those homos that 'coldplay ripped off'. you should check that thread out and thank me for turning you onto your new favorite band.

Yay! Matthew Sweet! One of my favorite artists. Sick Of Myself is the song which introduced me to him. Everything between Girlfriend and In Reverse is gold and belongs in everyone's CD collection. Kimi Ga Suki*Raifu is alright, too. I didn't care for Living Things, though. Too acoustic, too slow.

Hopefully Rock Bottom will be better (supposed to have been out by now but last I heard he's shopping it around to some labels).

/saw him live a few years ago with Velvet Crush
//great stuff
///ended with Girlfriend

Thanks DrBenway

I need to get some Sweet for my psuedoPod too. I'd forgotten how much I liked him. And she looks fantastic and sounds even better now. Win all around.

english motherfarker, do you speak it?

:)

translation for the fark impaired,'i didnt enjoy this song and am fully aware that nobody EVER posts representative clips of musicians on fark. im also aware singles are almost never representative of the artists collective work either, and in fact the singles tend to be the worst songs on the record. therefore, if someone has some suggestions for someone who disliked this particular song(me)but would like to hear others-please hook me up.

was that a little easier for you?

Love Matthew Sweet. Altered Beast, Girlfriend, 100% Fun, and In Reverse are really great albums. While I've enjoyed his last few ones, his 90's work were his best.

Lately, he seems to do nothing but light slower pop. :(

Well, when you say something "sucks," and you say the only other thing you heard by someone also "sucked," and then you ask for something by them that doesn't "suck," I don't think I would be alone in thinking that you're not seriously interested in hearing anything more by them.

That's called "reading between the lines" in case you've never heard of it.

Besides which, if you were actually that interested, you could do your own YouTube search and see if you found something to your liking on your own, rather than expecting others to spoon feed more songs for you to spit out.

Face it, not everybody likes the same stuff, even within shared genres of interest. Ain't no capital crime in that, right?

Love Matthew Sweet a lot.

100% Fun, Girlfriend, Altered Beast, and Kimi Ga Suki are primo. I think In Reverse and Blue Skies on Mars are okay (I prefer the latter to the former, actually). Living Things was so-so. I even own his 80s albums, Inside and Earth (both amusing for good and bad reasons).

/looking forward to his new album this year

I picked up the recent Legacy reissue of Girlfriend, pretty great. The "Son of Altered Beast" EP is really good too, if you can track down a copy. It has a good live version of Neil Young's "Don't Cry No Tears" and a live version of "Pull The Trigger" that actually has Greg Leisz reprising his pedal steel part -- wish there was a video of that.

My earliest exposure to Matthew was when he was in Oh-OK in the mid-80's with Michael Stipe's sister, Lynda. I've got the one 12" EP they put out. He doesn't sing on it at all, I don't think -- just played guitar.

i dont like doing the youtube search thing because alot of times the cool stuff isnt on there. i wasnt asking to be spoonfed, just a couple of suggestions so that i dont go to youtube and see some shiatty single that is possibly the worst thing on the album. which could very well be the case with the song this thread is about.

not understanding this part. i dont recall ever saying ive heard any song at all by matthew sweet except this shiatty one the thread is about. its the only thing ive EVER heard from him. all i said was that people whos opinions i trust have said this dude is good, so id like to be pointed in the direction of the 'good' which is a group im not going to lump this particular song into.

while we've been arguing semantics some people have posted some records so i no longer need your services in this matter. but it was nice talking to you!

I hung out with him when he was touring Altered Beast. Nice guy, but the only reason I got on the tour bus was because he was trying to get the girl I was with.
