However, he would be doing so without making lobbyists and corporate interests his primary source of funding.

I don't buy gas or Cheetos

I'll take some Spicy Hot Utz chips though

I heard people complaining about this today..

To me, this is just smart of him to do

Shame on Obama, he should just use his wife's private jet to fly around for campaign stops like everyone else!

500 million dollars for political advertising. That's a lot of money.

Until you consider how much Coke and Pepsi spend on advertising.

Lies do.

Obama's going to give McCain a run for his money.

I'm glad I'm a (small) part of that enormous sum. He'll need every cent of it to withstand the 527s and their scorched earth policy.

Obama's a fundraising machine! Fundraising is the key to winning elections.

Some of that money is mine, and it is worth every penny.

Jensaarai 2008-06-20 03:04:07 PM
Why can't Obama be respectable about this issue? He should act all pious about campaign finance reform, use tax payer money to fund his campaign, then rely on 527s, PACs, and the RNC... sorry, I mean DNC to use endless resources to spread dirty attacks for him using millions of millions of corporate dollars.

This "contributions from real people" shiat has GOT to stop. It's gonna screw up our election system! NOW how will poor corporations and millionaires get their due representation from the government?

/Has donated $55 so far.

That is my concern as well. I kept my contributions during the primary relatively small so I had more room to give during the general.

kemidra 2008-06-20 03:09:40 PM
Yeah, I just tossed him my second contribution of $25. My message was something like "this is my attempt to stop being so cynical about American politics."

First time I've ever contributed to a political campaign. I'm still trying not to feel dirty for it.

El Morro 2008-06-20 03:10:16 PM
Donated once before, looking forward to donating again.

When I talk to people who are on the fence about Obama, this aspect of his campaign is a BIG factor in getting then to realize how Obama is better than McCain.

People are so sick of corporate owned politicians, when they hear Obama doesn't take money from lobbyists, it's a pleasant surprise. Add to that Obama's fantastic speech about race and the other speech about religion, and you'll be hard pressed to find someone who won't vote for him.

EwoksSuck 2008-06-20 03:11:23 PM
I like Obama. I will vote for him. But damn there's so many other causes that could be done with 500 million dollars. Our political system is lousy that it requires this kind of money to have a shot at winning.

It's so nice to see that we're making such great strides towards getting money out of politics....

Wait, what?

Reverend_Gladstone 2008-06-20 03:19:28 PM
Because 90 million people will vote for him?

Falcc 2008-06-20 03:20:07 PM
The problem I have with this is I want to contribue more money to his cause, but damned if the shirt I want isn't back ordered all to hell. Can we really trust a president that doesn't let me order a "Got Hope?" t-shirt just becuase it's sold out? How is that kind of logic going to get us out from under Chineese debt?!

I can deliver speeches (not necessarily written by me either, mind you) about how rainbows shoot out of my ass and there is a pot of gold at the end for anyone who votes for me, but that doesn't qualify me for the Oval Office...

To clarify: THIS CAMPAIGN is the first one to which I've ever contributed financially. So far I've contributed to this campaign twice.

for all the critics of Obama on this issue I ask you just what part of his campaign financing isn't public? the argument isn't over where the money is coming from for these critics, but sour grapes that they can't get the public to donate to them like this.

won't someone think of the special interests?

HotWingConspiracy [TotalFark] 2008-06-20 03:23:08 PM
Why don't we just skip the elections and give the presidency to the guy that can raise the most cash?

More money = better person. It's the law.

neither does being a pow who turned against his country and gave up secrets to save his skin then came back to his wife and mother of his kids to dump her because she wasn't as pretty, young and rich as his latest mistress.

Hobodeluxe: for all the critics of Obama on this issue I ask you just what part of his campaign financing isn't public?

THIS
plain and simple
the little people surprised him
they came up with more cash than he possibly COULD have imagined those many months ago

THIS
is so simple
millions of people giving 10,20,100,1000 each
this is public financing exactly what they want

I love how this is being twisted into a bad thing
this is the BEST they can find to twist??
WOOT

Exactly! What kind of nut sells shirts made in the US when we should be paying off a foreign power? Instead he's giving money to American Unions, which is obviously code for Illegal Mexicans. He must be some kind of reverse commie vampire, but it's just such a catchy slogan.

I never donate money to political campaigns because of the influence of corporate and other organized fund raising. I donated $50 to Obama because every small donation matters for him. Since he is foregoing 527 funds, and DNC is not taking lobbyist money, I can understand why he can't take the chance of taking the public money.
