FTA: Instead, Venezuela sends what crude it does export to Europe to its own refineries there.

So the EU does use Venezuelan oil, after it's been refined by Venezuela.

Man I would love to see how this guy reacts if he got the call one night, that we no longer needed any of his oil.

So if Venezuela reduced the supply of oil to the world market, it wouldn't affect the price at all?

Hugo has WWMD. The time has come to invade.
We need his oil we need to liberate the people, and drive up the cost of oil.

He has oil, Castro had cigars.

Perhaps he should biatch about Mexico's policy which I beleive, they have a heavily guraded southern border.

I think, even if they didn't use Venezuelan oil the effect of taking the oil out of today's artificially inflated market would cause the prices in Europe to rise. Shiat, prices rise when one refinery blows up.

Tell me if I'm wrong.

But his propagandists have more style, gotta admit. I've never seen any retro-Soviet-style Bush posters, though if I did I'd save one so I could tell my kids about "that era."

And I'm sure you all reached that conclusion based on your own analysis. This has NOTHING at all to do with Chavez's Bush bashing, which got him the recognition that he craved. Attention whore? Yeah, he's an attention whore. But, it was funny to me how he only became an unstable threat to US interest after he questioned Bush's involvment in 9/11. Prior to that, no one knew or cared who he was, including Bush.

Yes it would, but if they instead sell it to someone else, which is more likely, then whoever used to be selling to them will sell it to Europe (who are now short and have money to buy it).

globalwarmingpraiser [TotalFark] 2008-06-20 11:03:27 AM
Seriously, that is like when he threatened to cut off the supply to the US. Considering he refines most of his oil here I would deal with higher prices for oil as we watch citgo stations shut down and venezuela's coffers go dry.

Nah, I'd say a lot of us are over that. We've been putting up with that for almost 8 years. We also had Bill Clinton. We no longer have shame after those two idiots. In fact, I'm grateful for that. It's good to be shameless.

y'know just how stupid bush, cheney and the neocons really are? now that they've pretty much admitted that going into iraq was for the oil, why in hell didn't they just off chavez instead of saddam? venezuela is a heck of a lot closer, fits in the monroe doctrine, and chavez a heckuvva lot more annoying than saddam ever was.
plus the the girls are a lot prettier than in iraq.

=================================

After 7 years of rising oil prices don't you think a country who is a major exporter of oil would have a little stashed away?

But, that's not the issue being raised. The question was, could a Venezuelan embargo hurt Europe. I say, yes.

It doesn't matter whether the EU uses 'their oil' or not.

If supplies decrease worldwide, it will increase the price worldwide, not just for the EU.

Appreciate it, I understood the implications of reducing supply though, the headline is stupid.

Venezuelan oil is crap. What I mean by that is if you rank oil by usefulness, North Sea crude is near the top and Venezuelan oil is near the bottom.

BuzzBoy: It's hard for me to believe that Venezuela has built refineries in Europe.

Why? They own refineries in the US, built by Cities Services (now CITGO.)

The only oil refineries that can process Venezuelan oil are in The United States, or are owned by American refineries.

I'm unsure it's that simple. From what I've read, Hugo's oil is not the same as other countries' oil. It's heavy and dirty and requires a lot more work in the refining process. Also, Chavez hasn't a fleet of oceanhardy tankers to make delivery to anywhere much beyond American ports a feasible reality. Basically, he sells to America and europe because his margin is positive only in those places. So, Venezuelan oil might not be a homogenous worldwide commodity.
