The right wing seems to think that they have a lock on rural voters, and the best way to encourage those voters is to denigrate people who live in the cities and suburbs. Keep it up. I think it was the way it was said, in context. He said midwesterners clung to their religion and guns, and implied they weren't capable of grasping political realities. I doubt you actually missed the condescension in his tone.

The "answer", of course, is that Obama meant it as an insult- whether I consider it an insult is a completely different issue.
