i applaud cindy doing this regardless of her motivation. mostly because i highly doubt obama would go after her either way, so in all honesty, she wasn't in danger.

What's she worried about?

It's not like her last name is Heinz.

What Obama does or doesn't do personally isn't the problem. It's the rogue "over zealous staffer" on his cmapaign and a candidate's supporters that do all the damage. Remember Bush wasn't responsible for Swift Boat Veterans for Truth either.

I think it occured to someone in her campaign that they've run out of ammo on Michelle Obama and realized just how vulnerable McCain and his wife are to the exact same attacks that they've used on her.

Important to note that, while stealing drugs from your charity isn't great, the real issue here is McCain's own actions, not his wife's.

Divorce, cheating, possibly disrespectful conduct, etc.

Any qualms you may have against Michelle Obama are based on her actions.

However, she's fair game for those of us who aren't affiliated with his campaign. They opened that door by going after Michelle Obama; well, I don't think Michelle vs. Cindy is going to be a favorable comparison for Cindy.

Gwendolyn: Remember Bush wasn't responsible for Swift Boat Veterans for Truth either.

Do you actually believe that? I'd bet big money it was done with secret coordination.

Tell me if I'm being too republican, but there is a big difference between someone dredging up old deamons that Cindy beat and saying during the race for the presidency that you are proud of your country for the FIRST TIME IN YOUR ADULT LIFE! Keep spouting off anti-american semitism Michelle. You're one of the best players on the republican team. Personal life needs to be kept personal. But when you spout off in a public forum you should can be a target like everyone else.

But Barack being a drug addict and a cocaine user is off limits.

A lot of Republicans have problems with coherent thought.

That being said, there was nothing un-American about Michelle's comment. I can't stand how so many Republicans get all upset when you suggest that ANYTHING about America is less than perfect.

Yeah, but Cindy McCain is a thief and a junky. Also, there's some substantial speculation that her and John were "together" before he ever divorced his first wife.

unlikely [TotalFark] 2008-06-19 07:38:44 PM
I believe that Barack and Michelle Obama have also both said "Leave the Candidates' families out of this."

And that would be more than fair enough. I don't care what the wife does, I care what the candidate has to offer.

I'd LOVE to see both of them do what they're saying and leave the family out of it.

Someone upthread said "over zealous staffers are the danger." That may be so, moving forward, and I hope people also manage to not lose sight of what comes from the candidates and what comes from 3rd parties.

Seems likely, considering their marriage was about a month after his divorce. Even if you think it's bad form to go after Cindy, that one, and the whole "leaving your disabled wife for a younger, richer, prettier model" thing reflects on John McCain himself.

False, though they had been separated earlier.

If candidates' family members want to be left out of the campaign, then they shouldn't actively participate in it. If they go around giving speeches, interviews, etc., then they're fair game.

Skeptos: If candidates' family members want to be left out of the campaign, then they shouldn't actively participate in it. If they go around giving speeches, interviews, etc., then they're fair game.

Especially if they explicitly go after the other candidate's spouse, like Cindy McCain did. I know that Obama won't do it, but it's inevitable that people will bring this stuff up. Republicans wouldn't hesitate to use any dirt on Obama's wife against him, so I'm not going to hesitate either. Plus, as I said above, a lot of the stuff about Cindy McCain also reflects very badly on John McCain.

Spouse Carol Shepp (m. 1965, div. 1980)

I normally don't feed trolls, but danlpoon and all his alts is actually somewhat entertaining to take down. Every once in a while myself or someone else slams him so hard he suddenly disappears from a thread he's been in the entire day. That's such a rewarding experience. :D
