What were you doing when you were 14?

'young modern' is a great album and vastly superior to anything midnight oil ever did. alot of people just remember silverchair from their ultrashiatty earlier records and dont realize they actually got good.

Headline fails...

What about John Butler Trio or Wolfmother to name a couple?

dear god I hated Midnight Oil with a seething passion.

on the plus side for Aussie music, I think the Hoodoo Gurus are still out there doing something.

van she, cut copy and midnight juggernauts, motherfarkers. all great, innovative new bands from down under. check them out forthwith, you bemulleted, mustachioed, rush-lovin', orange-dicked IT nerds.

The answer to the headline is "The Go-Betweens" (RIP, Grant).

cut copy

I didn't even realize they were from Australia. I can't get into their sound, though.

You better believe I lol'd at work.

I was 15 when that album came out, and it was honestly kind of inspiring that some kid my age was making records and touring.

/you gonna wait too fat boy

Absolutely! I was actually 19 though.

Doesn't change the fact that the song is frickin' retarded.

I can't imaging how many kids got all into it and emotional while singing along to that nonsense though :)

/YOOOOOUUUUUUU WAITED TILL TOMORROWWWWW!!!!!!

Silverchair's lead singer may be a flaming homo, but at least he doesn't suck.

Oh wait...

I came in here to say this. Best band to come out in the last 10 years, and my personal favorite.

I hope Crowded House won something. There are some good tracks on their new album; "Silent House" is one of the best songs they've ever written.

"Straight Lines" certainly bears no resemblance whatsoever to anything on their first few albums. I liked their earlier stuff, it was fun to play and you could definitely hear the marked growth in Johns' songwriting (See: Tomorrow vs. Ana's Song). I didn't like th latest album because of the shift, but it grew on me.

I'd assume that JBT and Wolfmother didn't release anything last year and thus no mention in the awards. That or they just aren't well-regarded at home.

Yep. He's still in the House of Representatives, along with being the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts.

Wolfmother haven't put an album out for three years now, and JBT are kind of like this part of the world's Dave Matthews Band.

Kinda digging the Airbourne album - not a bad effort at straight ahead bar rock from the AC/DC scholl of songwriting.

I was going to make some similar kind of comment, then I googled APRA. Turns out the A is for Australasian, not Australian, so I guess they qualify.

I came jump on the "Crowded House are Kiwis" thingy too... Why is it that NZ is so much smaller than Australia but has so many more good bands?

The Living End and Wolfmother.

Also, when I was in Oz a couple years ago I heard some very good metal acts that had their shiat together (mostly battle of the bands contests I attended around the east coast).

The band has certainly grown leaps and bounds since they started. Diorama was pretty damned good, and Young Modern is Silverchair's most creative undertaking yet.

And tallguywithglasseson: 19 when Frogstomp came out? Good for you friend, but your age has no bearing on how old Daniels Johns was in 1995, as egocentric as you seem to be. The world doesn't celebrate your birthday the way you seem to think it does.

I like Airbourne, but damn... I played a track for a coworker without telling him who it was and all he said was, "That's pretty cool, but I never listened to much AC/DC with the first singer dude..."
