I remember downloading this early last year. Now instead of looking like an idiot in front of your family strumming to a plastic guitar, you can look like even more of an idiot in front of your family pressing random keys on a keyboard.

I managed to get my usb guitar for the 360 working with my PC and tried it out, this was about a year ago. It was pretty cool just because it had almost any song I wanted, but the gameplay wasn't near as pretty or smooth. The note charts were made by random users also, so some of them would be spot on and some of them would be terrible.

The last edition of this that I played did not support Hammer ons/offs. Has anything changed?

TheOnion [TotalFark] 2008-06-18 08:27:56 AM
I played it, but without the guitar its not even close to being the same, sadly.

GH4 will let users make and trade their own songs, so that might be just as good. Maybe

/but probably not

I LOVED this game when I first played it. I never had a desire to go buy Guitar Hero, but this was good enough for me for a while. Playing with the keyboard is an awesome idea for those who haven't bought the real game and a guitar. I could even play it on breaks at work.

But it was still a cheap knockoff and it was still pretty buggy (at least on Linux). Unless it's had some major improvements in the last year or so since I tried it, I'm just not interested anymore. The free songs on the song-sharing sites kinda sucked ... maybe 1% were playable, so pirating the real GH songs was the only way to go to get a decent selection. But please, do let me know if this game gets an upgrade.

Get a USB to PS2 controller adapter and you can use the normal controller with this game, works pretty well. The only problem is the sensitivity of the notes. The timing is much less forgiving compared to GH.

Crack the pose the game instructs you to do whilst holding the keyboard in your hands and I guarantee you will feel like an idiot.

I am a guitarist, and I hate other guitarist who have a problem with those that play guitar hero. If you have a car, does that mean you cant play driving games. This is dumb, people are dumb. If nothing else guitar hero enables you to work on finger dexterity and cordination while feeling like a rock star.

/I am not great at guitar hero though, because when I get into it I feel the need to switch to the real thing.

Guitar Hero is a phenominal game - couple of friends, couple of drinks and it's a good night out.

OTOH, I just got a real guitar, and I'm teaching myself to play it - 1 scale, 2 chords, and the first 4 bars of "No Surprises" so far.

A real guitar is so much more fun. It's also a real sense of accomplishment when you're able to play a song (or 4 bars of a song) that you have chosen.

AdamK 2008-06-18 09:20:52 AM
no shiat

it's actually pretty easy to make songs too, made pink floyd's echoes myself (although it still needs some tweaking)

they need to make a drum mod now

why anybody even bothers with the actual guitar hero games is beyond me (besides rock band of course)

star_topology 2008-06-18 09:26:47 AM
Awesome! I knew this was out there for awhile, but never knew what it was called. Every youtube video I've watched with custom songs never said how they made it.

Old news is new news to some people.

NSFW language at the end (new window)

He's also now a spokesperson for a plastic-guitar maker and likely will play beat based games for money for a long time (he's incredible at DDR as well).

Not that everyone who plays Guitar Hero will ever make any money off of it. Most people that play these games play them for fun and would likely play different video games for fun if Guitar Hero did not exist.

I'm sure they would still be ridiculed by Marines for not shooting real guns and by race car drivers for not racing real cars...

I wonder if all these folks bashing GH have ever played a Madden game. I mean, it takes a lot more skill to be in the real NFL, and you look less retarded, and it probably gets you laid more.

It is about 100 times better now, they have been doing some really really good mods that turn it into practically a duplicate of GH/RockBand interchangeibly. It runs, works, looks, and feels just like the game now.

Stavr0 2008-06-18 10:43:19 AM
A good thing about FonF is that there are thousands of note data files available out there. These are legal because they do not include any actual notes, lyrics or sounds from the original song. You then can convert the song from a CD you own into an OGG file and drop it in the songs folder along with the note data file.

I'm not saying give up your DDR advanced. What I'm saying is LEARN THE REAL GUITAR. An hour a day will go a long way. It's not that hard to learn, but difficult to master. When I hear fanboys of GH talking about how much harder the game is than a real guitar my head explodes.

You might learn something about music theory too, who knows.

AcheronX [TotalFark] 2008-06-18 10:48:57 AM
Stavr0: It is trivially easy to convert an MP3 to OGG. Get off my internets you troll.

But OGG is not the world standard for digital music. Wouldn't an ideal product be one that requires a minimum of fuss and extra steps? Would it have been so tough to make it play OGG and MP3? I know Audiosurf plays whatever damn filetype you feed it. Restricting it to one type, which happens to be the favorite of open source cognoscenti is just cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Why does old news like this get greenlighted? This game has been around for quite a while now and playing a game with a fake guitar is bad enough using your keyboard like a guitar is so much worse.

Twigz221 2008-06-18 10:58:36 AM
Bah. Guitar Hero is old news. Rock Band has surpassed Guitar Hero in every way imaginable.

I tried this game out. It's okay, but doesn't capture nearly the feeling of Rock Band or even Guitar Hero. The note charts suck for the most part. And the fact that it doesn't drop unplayed notes in the same manner just takes away a lot from the game.

Still, it's a good start. But without having 5 seperate audio tracks and a development team like Harmonix, it just will never be a substitution.

Stepmania was a great substitute for DDR, but DDR is a lot less technical game.

AcheronX: Does it really only work with OGG files?

MP3 is still patent encumbered (and will be until around 2017 or so!) and anyone using MP3 format in their product without a license is opening themselves up for a lawsuit. OGG is free to use even for commercial products.

Hence, many FOSS developers use OGG.

I've actually learned quite a bit of basic song construction and patterns from playing as much Rock Band as I do. (I hesitate to call it 'music theory' as they are mostly personal observations that I would have trouble putting into academic terms.)

After several months of playing Rock Band I have a newfound respect for Neal Peart's technical drumming, or Steve Harris' amazing bass work, or the epic dueling guitar dynamic of Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing.

I've never understood people's vitriol for these games. I've always seen it as music 2.0: an interactive way to listen to your favorites or expose people to new music that they might not have listened to otherwise, whether it's the spidery guitar riffs of Jerry Garcia, the sheer epicosity of Boston, or the ferocity of early Metallica.

Thousands of kids are about to discover the Pixies for the first time next week, when Doolittle is released as a full album. How is that a bad thing?

The people saying "Learn to play real guitar" are people who can't actually play, but want to feel cool for having a guitar.

Learning guitar isn't fun. It farking sucks. GH/RB is fun. And GH on the more difficult settings is harder than actually playing said song on a guitar.

Playing on a plastic guitar won't make you a guitarist, but playing some Rock Band drums can sure as hell help you learn drums, which is a good thing. Good drummers seem to be very hard to find. Anything that could help create more of them is alright with me.
