The surround-sound version of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours is one of the discs I use to show off my system. And Donald Fagen, Steely Dan...

His version of Led Zeppelin II is rare, but sounds far better than every other vinyl pressing and CD remaster they've put out.

This guy is a titan.

Almost all of Rush's entire output.

Not even a wizard could make that crap sound good.

Mr Ludwig is one of the good guys.

He's definitely one of the legends. Luckily I have a local guy who's probably second only to Ludwig and you don't have to give him a $4K down payment to book a session.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but your opinion sucks.

Pretty cool interview. But enough gear-geekery for most folks to give up mid-article, I suppose.

Why did he list AC/DC "Back in Black" as part of his pre-1972 repertoire? That album was 1980.

Go listen to some Britney Spears, and then tell me if you still think this.

Would love to get into Mastering, need a really good ear and a knack for Aural Perception, not to mention some really expensive ass speakers, etc..

/Work in a studio now

It's funny he mentions "Almost all of Rush's entire output." I wonder if the Gold album is one of the one's he doesn't count as satisfying.

I believe that was the album that one of my recording Professors used to show us what not to do. There are several tracks where the clipping is horrible , and if you're looking at the actual waveforms you can see it easily. I realize he just did the Mastering, not recording but still...

Since you work in a studio, you seem to know that there are three primary phases where distortion is introduced: recording, mixing, and mastering.

Now, if a producer/engineer/artist delivers distorted mixes for mastering, then it's hardly the fault of the mastering house or engineer, is it?

Did you know that you and straight women appear to have similar brains, in some respects??

Was the fault of the engineer no doubt, since he was dealing with the originals. Was just commenting on it probably not being very satisfying or perhaps frustrating even, trying to make the best out of less than perfect source material.

Yeh, but I didn't get a "bad kitty - link's been submitted before" notice, so it's new to Fark. And it's pretty cool, which is why I submitted it.

Better than a news flash tag that Tim Russert has died, submitted on Sunday.

Nestea Plunge: Dire Strait's "Brothers In Arms" is an excellent example of what all CDs should have sounded like.

It took them a long time to get the compression figured out.

I cannot refer to the example you are talking about, but if today's use of compression is the "figured out" version, I would beg to differ. 99% of today's music (including remastered versions) are TOO heavily compressed. They do this to make small speakers sound big. The problem is, if you DO have proper speakers, it just sounds like crap.

That was Vapor Trails. The record has a lot of rocking, raw songs, but the recording sucked. I think that's one of the reasons why their next album was so over-produced.

Interesting interview - next time we have a digital v analogue debate, we should pull it out to shut the vinyl-diehards up.

Disappointed there was no discussion on the loudness war though. He's not innocent himself.

Very nice. Very nice.

Turns out he didn't actually master Before and After Science, though. So there. ;-)
