(Musicnews) Cool Good ol' Bob Dylan, still the voice of reason after all these years, blasts the music industry: "The music world's a made-up bunch of hypocritical rubbish. I know that the book people are a whole lot saner"   (musicsnews.com) divider line 19

Are we sure he "said" that? Listening to him is kinda like looking at a Rorschach.

The "book people" are laying off editors left and right and are doing their damndest to merge, Voltron-like, into a single giant publishing conglomerate.

Amazon is cutting both ways, simultaniously bringing ebooks mainstream while ruthlessly stifling independent publishing houses by refusing to sell their products if they don't use Amazon's DRM-encrusted format.

Meanwhile, POD is a self-defeating industry; the lack of any sort of vetting for quality or readability gives POD books a deserved reputation for being blogs, fanfics, and diaries bound in cheap covers. The chances of an author making money through POD are practically zero.

All this with readership dropping each year as attention spans get shorter and portable electronic entertainment gets cheaper and more durable.

And yet Dylan's right. Even with all the sharks and pitfalls in the publishing world, the book industry is still probably better off than the music industry.

Hell, I can sell roadmaps of the soul to the old folks home AND the college!

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

I would like to give Bob congrats for fathering the only musically talented offspring of a famous musician. I can't think of another.

Arlo Gunthrie and Wilson Phillips don't count.

I dunno, Rufus Wainwright is pretty talented. And little Jason Bonham is nothing to shake a stick at.

are you talking about Jacob? One headlight? its probably the 5th best one-hit wonder single of 1994 (or so).

BUT, Dylan also fathered Jesse Dylan, acclaimed (by me) director of How High. the very best (i'm completely serious, see it) stupid hip-hop weed comedy that could ever possibly be.

I consider myself a big Dylanphile, but I did not know that. That's very interesting, and quite surprising... Jesse Dylan might be more talented in my book than Jakob.

"Good ol'" should be the American equivalent of the British "sir."
