The record industry is dead.

Long live rock and roll.

Wintermute6 [TotalFark] 2008-06-17 08:52:54 AM
So KISS is pulling a Moop? And it's supposed to discourage file sharing?

gatsome 2008-06-17 08:54:49 AM
Don't artists make most of their $$$ on tours? Or crappy reality TV shows?

AliceInWonderland [TotalFark] 2008-06-17 09:00:40 AM
Gene Simmons and his crappy as music that I wouldn't steal anyway can kiss my ass.

friendinpa [TotalFark] 2008-06-17 09:01:19 AM
Sorry Gene, but you guys lost your relevance to rock and roll back in the 70's.

Guess their albums aren't earning them royalties anymore, huh?

bales [TotalFark] 2008-06-17 09:09:14 AM
maybe this will weed out the shiatty bands who rely on lame gimmicks as opposed to musical talent.

Alacritous [TotalFark] 2008-06-17 09:11:31 AM
Yes, Hopefully the record industry is dead.

The Music, on the other hand, will go on as long as there are people that feel the need to express themselves with sounds in the air.

Viva la revolucion!

Local music FTW.

Shaggy_C: Local music FTW

This...and does anybody else think it's perfectly reasonable to expect musicians to play their music for audiences to make money? You know, like in most of the history of the profession? I think they're getting a little greedy/lazy after a couple decades of big distribution systems for recorded music without file sharing when a few got rediculously rich off playing a song once and then charging to have it re-played a few million times.

queezyweezel 2008-06-17 09:27:55 AM
Hmmmm.....Maybe $25 CDs and $200 concert tickets did a bit more to destroy the industry than P2P file sharing.

dogdaze [TotalFark] 2008-06-17 09:31:06 AM
Either get on the train, Gene, or watch it leave the station without you. Yea, the fans have changed the rules as it's their money to spend how they see fit. The market and industry have changed. If you can become a reality TV star, then you've already acknowledged said change.

/dumbass tag would be better

Probably because Gene is a businessman, not a musician...

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-06-17 09:40:27 AM
what happened to Gene?

The Gene of old would have been all over this figuring out a way to make money off of it.

Now he's just issuing the rock equivalent of "get off my lawn".

Isotope 2008-06-17 09:42:34 AM
SilentStrider: The Gene of old would have been all over this figuring out a way to make money off of it.

He's still the Gene of old. The problem is that the Gene of old still has the same 1973 understanding of technology.

Gene-Simmons-blaming-kids-for-his-failure articles are about as ubiquitous as "OMG Vinyl is making a comeback" articles.

SilentStrider: what happened to Gene?

Nothing. He's been pretty consistent in his level of suckage. If anything, he sucks even more - marked improvement if you will.

Let's all admit right up front; we don't giving a flying fark at a rolling donut if bands make money or not. We found a way to get what we want for free. If we could print our own concert tickets for free and get away with it, we would. It has NOTHING to do with failed buisness model or outdated technology. It has everything to do with not paying. We copy software without hesitation. We share passwords to pay sites. We take massive advantage of the fact that they have not figured out a way to stop us.
We are the same people that would walk into a BestBuy and walk out with a new TV and if we knew there would be no repercussions.
You can call me full of shiat, but deep down, you know it's the truth.

/While typing this I'm listing to music that I downloaded without paying.

TheCid 2008-06-17 10:35:52 AM
Gene Simmons can DIAF. The recording industry is obsolete, and good riddance.

They run on a poisonous business model, and it needs to die.

jackrazz [TotalFark] 2008-06-17 10:42:16 AM
Back in my day, when we stole something or broke the law, we were proud enough to admit that we were thieves.

People who illegally download music have the opportunity to call themselves pirates. Have some damn pride in your illegal activities, and stop trying to rationalize them.

Hrm, let's see. If you have a car and I steal it, you don't have your car anymore. If you release a song and I download it, you still have your song.

Ant 2008-06-17 10:48:23 AM
I stole some of Gene's songs and then deleted them all because even $0.00 was too much to pay for something that sucked so much.

TheCid: Hrm, let's see. If you have a car and I steal it, you don't have your car anymore. If you release a song and I download it, you still have your song.

Except that you've deprived me of the fair market value for my song. Yes, I still have the physical sheet music, recording, etc., but it becomes less valuable to the point where I don't receive any benefit from having my song if people keep downloading it without paying for it.

If you take something that does not belong to you without paying for it, whether it is a tangible item of property or not, you are stealing it.

The consumers have made clear they don't like the current music industry business model, and prefer a more flexible one. Free market- adapt or die, don't just run to the government to get them to shut down activity that might force you to change.

cliffy 2008-06-17 10:58:45 AM
I think everyone who downloads music illegally should get a paycehck for 1/2 of the hours they worked for a pay period. After all, their boss was just trying out their talent and efforts, to see if he/she liked them.

I mean you work a lot right? It's not going to hurt if you do not get paid for a day here and there, even if it is just 10% of your days right?

If you complain about not getting paid for the work that you produce, then you really are running an outdated business model, and you are being greedy.

Boo farking hoo. You don't have a right to profit. Just the ability to try.

While I love the original KISS lineup... Gene Simmons has been deliberately driving the bands name into the mud for the last 20 years.

Ace Frehley rocks, however. His two Frehley's Comet albums were very good.

What do you know... I actually work in a situation that is comparable to this.

I am a designer (engineering, not art). Now, when I create a blueprint for a fuel system or a drain system, there's no telling how many times it will be used, and by how many different people. Would you care to guess how many times I get paid for it?

I only get paid for the time spent creating it. No matter how many copies are created, or how many people use them.

If you want to make money from recorded music, become a sessions musician.

You have deduced the difference between musicians and recording artists. It is a damn sight cheaper to have artists you control fully, as opposed to artists who have their own agenda and their own ideas. Best way to keep up the profit margin is to control the means to production, and to control all the distribution. This is the real reason the industry is at odds with itself, is because labels are becoming increasingly irrelevant, and they aren't exactly leaping to adapt, save to try to figure out how to keep their hands in the artists' and public's pockets for as little an investment as possible.

Thanks, Gene, but I'll take criticism from someone who didn't make their living playing 3-chord arena rock for "music fans" impressed more by costumes and pyrotechnics than than music.

Man, Greed $immons really has a bone to pick with Radiohead. I guess it is because Radiohead are killing everything Greed once stood for.

I guess $immons will have to rest on the portion of the great KISS merchandise like Koffee tables, Kondoms, dolls, makeup products, and the KISS lawnmower.
