Ah, so you've performed the music of both vocalists yourself, have you? I've been performing in bands, including cover bands at times, since 1995. I can tell you that while Halford's lines are more difficult overall, Chester has lines that are no walk in the park.

Of course, the most talented vocalists from the "younger" crop of bands these days are not even in metal, unfortunately. There will be no amazing successors to Bruce Dickinson, James LaBrie, Geoff Tate, and their kind. There was hope on the female front for a while there with the goth-metal trio, but then Anneke quit and Amy Lee turned out to be sub-standard outside the studio. At least Cristina is still top-class even without a mixing board. The bands that are just emerging now... there isn't much to hope for.

Your saying since I don't sing I can't possibly know what I'm talking about? Please, my voice isn't great, but I have a good ear. Halford has much more range and power than Chester. That's a fact.

I've seen them both live as well, Halford's voice can last an entire show where as Chester's starts getting weaker as the show progresses.

There will be no amazing successors to Bruce Dickinson, James LaBrie, Geoff Tate, and their kind.

On this I will completely agree. Bruce and Geoff are vocal gods. I never got into Dream Theater as much, but what I have heard is impressive.

I like LP, so sue me. I also like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, U2, RHCP, Green Day, Coldplay and just about every other band that is considered bottom feeder music on Fark. Oh, throw in Jack Johnson, DMB and John Mayer, yeah I like them too.

I guess the fact that everyone of these bands found success means I should just say they suck now, because you know, that is the way it must be. I am happy to think that some of your favorite unknown bands at this point might one day find success so you can no longer like them because the snob in you will not allow it.

Those "14-year old hot topic patrons" will have their hands on None So Vile soon enough, just as soon as they're done being introduced to the band through the sick brutality of The Unspoken King.

The whole "I decorate my basement with faded Demolition Hammer gig posters and collect Bathory LPs signed by Quorthon, therefore I am a superior person and have stumbled across the secret of Music, let me tell you all about it" attitude becomes really silly in hindsight, by the way. just a heads-up

As a totally relaxed "listen to your music, I'll listen to mine" sort of guy, this argument really gets on my nerves. You almost have the right attitude - almost. Listen to Green Day. Seriously. Nobody will stop you. Listen to Linkin Park, listen to Dave Matthews Band.

But you're just being a different sort of musical taste asshole when you play the "obscure music snob" card. People who look for music on the internet quickly overcome any sort of boundaries of obscurity. Just because people listen to music you haven't heard of doesn't negatively impact them, it means you're not looking for this music yourself.

Seriously, people.

Sounds about right. Though Fort Minor is pretty good; or I should say I find it easier to listen to and I enjoy the beats more.

My son listens to LP and I try to. I actually think they have a great sound. The one guy who plays the guitar is singing, it sounds really good and then..... the blonde guy starts screaming his head off, my ears start to bleed and I turn it off and holler at some kids to get off my lawn.

What the Fa-hell?

Just because I listed a bunch of mainstream bands I listen to you assume I don't listen to any "obscure" music? Uh, I do like a lot of nonmainstream stuff, but when it by chance goes mainstream I still listen to it because I could give a shiat less if it is no longer underground. Hence, my comment I made about people who drop bands from there rotation because they got popular. Please tell me you agree that these people exist. By no means did I slam local music, indie music or whatever else you want to call it, if you took it that way you must have been looking to just get pissy and throwout an argument you have been thinking about for months.

ugh - don't get me started. the new Cryptopsy sucks. badly. and not because it's "not as heavy". the song writing is boring, the clean vox parts aren't catchy (kinda of important for melody), and the screams are annoying metalcore-esque shouts. shame on Flo.

so goes Lord Worm, so goes Cryptopsy (i'm glad i got to see them w/ Lord Worm perform None So Vile in entirely live a few years back).

and quite frankly i'd love to see kids get their hands on None So Vile. the song writing was genius, the songs were technical and fast, and Lord Worm was at the top of his game vocally. if you really want heavy and brutal, don't puss out and listen to crap like Slipknot or Limp Bizkit (or whatever else is considered "edgy" and "heavy" by kids nowadays).

Well, I don't know if he's the most typical kid (he's a musician), but my 16 year old cousin is familiar with Opeth. That's definitely promising to me. Of course, the last album of theirs that I'm familiar with is My Arms, Your Hearse so I don't really know how they've progressed over the years.

These people probably do exist, but I don't know any personally.

I took the tone of your post wrong, I suppose. It was the "I am happy to think that some of your favorite unknown bands at this point might one day find success so you can no longer like them because the snob in you will not allow it" part which sounded (at the time I got pissy and responded) like it was aimed at everybody. Sadly there are also people who refuse to believe that anybody listens to off-mainstream music genuinely, and only do it to be hipsters; I'm glad you're not one of them. I apologise.

grim_and_frostbritten: and quite frankly i'd love to see kids get their hands on None So Vile. the song writing was genius, the songs were technical and fast, and Lord Worm was at the top of his game vocally. if you really want heavy and brutal, don't puss out and listen to crap like Slipknot or Limp Bizkit (or whatever else is considered "edgy" and "heavy" by kids nowadays).

Hah, following the musical trends of kids is invariably a bad idea anyway - there's too much peer prestige involved for most of them. I appreciate None So Vile, but I prefer sludge like Iron Monkey and Acid Bath for the "brutal" sound.
