Meh, I just saw Kanye in MA, and it was an AWESOME show. The stage was really, really cool. One of the best live shows I've ever seen, upstaged only by the DJ Shadow/Quannum Tour and George Clinton

Imagine his light show was just starting, 2.5 hours after the scheduled performance, just as the sun is rising.

Kanye Worst

West was originally set to kick things off at 8:15 p.m., but because he wanted to make the most of his Glow-in-the-Dark Tour's lighting show, the hip-hopster's camp asked to push back the gig to 2:45 a.m. following Pearl Jam's show.

Passive Aggressive Larry [TotalFark] 2008-06-16 11:52:57 PM
I knew when they scheduled in Pearl Jam for only 2 hours that they were going to go way over that. A short Pearl Jam show is at least 2 and a half hours.

I think following Pearl Jam regardless of how long of a show they put on was a mistake.

I was there, and trust me it was a HUGE disappointment. Everything in the article is true, about there not being any explanation for the lateness or Kanye ever acknowledging the crowd. I wanted to enjoy it, I really did. But with everyone pissed off at him for waiting until goddamn 4:30 in the morning to start a light show, it was just too much. He cut his show short too, it only lasted maybe an hour, and he was obviously not even that into the performance. It really sucked because I was talking to people throughout the day who didn't really like Kanye and was trying to convince them that this was going to be an amazing show but it just fell completely flat. I don't know if Kanye should get all of the blame, but definitely somebody farked up big time. Even if the lateness wasn't his fault, he could have made up for it by performing his ass off. Instead he pissed off a bunch of people who sacrificed a lot of time to see him.

jpat: Kanye is the black Axl Rose.

That is the most astute thing I think I've ever heard someone say about Kanye.

Like Axl Rose, plenty of talent, especially when it comes to producing. However, just like Axl, he'll alienate just about everybody in the industry to the point where no one will work with him (and the few who do will be a revolving door of artists who will quickly realize what a douche he is), then he'll "retire", followed by him hyping up some huge magnus opus of an album that'll be "the best thing ever", taking years to produce. And just like Axl, his fans will wait...and wait...and wait....and then forget about him.

i recently worked his show as a local stagehand, and his crew were a very, very unhappy bunch. i know we did 19 hours in a fairly well designed arena with the smaller setup, so i can definitely see the consecutive 22 hour days. the show was less than average. as a longtime stagehand, i can tell you those kinds of delays are rarely the fault of stage crews, it usually lies in one of two camps. the first being equipment failure, and the other being the talent's ego. i can take a very educated guess which one this incident falls under.

I was a big Kanye fan until i saw this tour live. That's all it was, a light show. If i wanted one of them i woulda seen one of those laser things.

He sucks live. He looked like he'd be sick after watching him on Music HD, but damn the glow in the dark tour? Sucked.

If you honestly thought his live show was worthwhile other than the lights, you have no taste in live music whatsoever. No crowd acknowledgment AT ALL when i was at his Glow in the Dark tour show in camden. He sucks live, period. There are much better hip hop acts to go see live and he really let me down. HUGE time.

although if i was on acid i woulda liked it because of those lights i bet...

oh yeah, and there's no defending his show. everyone who liked it is either like 15 or naive to really good LIVE music. Kanye is still great on albums and an excellent producer.. But damn he sucked live.

There are better shows out there, and the appeal of 4 days in a Tenn. field with drunken frat boys on Acid with Kanye and Metallica hedalining just sounds like a new level of hell even Hunter S. Thompson couldn't imagine.

While I'm all for showmanship, if your performance relies on a giant light show and glow in the dark spaceship maybe, just maybe, you're compensating for deficiencies in the material being performed.

Even if you hate PJ, you have to acknowledge that:

A) they put on a great show (2 1/2 to 3 hr shows are the norm),
B) they maintain a large and loyal/cultlike fanbase,
C) they run one of the best fan clubs on the planet

DD0 [TotalFark] 2008-06-17 09:14:45 AM
I'm just surprised that they are allowed to let the festival go on until whenever they want. Pretty amazing the city/county is ok with that.

Is the sun really still so bright in Tennessee that an 8:15 start time wouldn't have worked for his Glow-in-the-Dark laser light show?

Or was the "we want it darker out" a euphemism for "Kanye's ego is so big, he just has to close the show"?

FitzShivering 2008-06-17 09:22:41 AM
To those of you saying Kanye let success go to his head, I can assure you that before he was ever really famous he was already a walking douchenozzle (helped with one of his concerts back before he got "huge"). Back when he got paid the same amount as the String Cheese Incident. :D

It actually was still somewhat bright out by that time, so it did make some sense. But I'm sure Kanye's ego played into that too.

For those of you talking about George Clinton here:

That's one of the worst live performances I've ever seen. His back up singers were bored, wasted and actually smoking cigarettes on stage. George was so wasted he was forgetting the lyrics and almost fell down many times. The whole thing was such a mess I walked out early, which I'd never done before.
I wouldn't go see that crack head again if you gave me a ticket.
It was sad.

Somebody needed to help him find the funk.

I never cared for santanna but saw him at a festival around '95 or '96 and thought he put on a farking great show so I ended up buying a couple of his CDs.

This of course was before his sell out period of which Im not a huge fan.

Pearl Jam puts on a good show and if they came to a better venue than the ghetto lakewood here in atlanta I may go see them again.

Who knows maybe "we want it darker out" is Bonnaroo's way of saying they were waiting for black people and therefore care about them.

Oh and I've never seen a bad P-Funk show including one where Ed Bradley got up on stage and danced for a song or two. It was right before he died (wonder if he smoked crack w/ George).
