there's also that pesky vampire problem too, but we don't like to talk about that with outsiders. Let's just say that you want to be indoors before dark.

Whenever I go to PA, I play everyone's favorite driving game: 'Count the Silos!' I usually get bored when I reach triple digits.

I love it here.

Just got done playing a great round of gold w/ my father at Westover CC, then went to Iron Hill Brewery in Montgomeryville for drinks. That's all I need.

Anyone who has grown up drinking water in Pennsylvania will understand the importance of bottled drinks of all kinds.

KramericaWallet 2008-06-15 05:52:07 PM
Yes, but if they made life in PA less crappy, people would drink less and there would be less drink-tax revenue. It's lose-lose.

rocinante721: I don't care if you have a million good microbreweries, your state's liquor laws still suck. The state makes it a biatch to buy liquor and that just aint right my man.

blkhwk86 2008-06-15 06:05:44 PM
My brothers and i went insane there. It...is farking...BORING. Nothing to do, nothing to drink(since everything is closed by 8), and you're left with being sober and walking around(if you can). Not surprised at this guy being unpopular. Maybe they should allow grocery stores to sell liquor and beer and allow them to sell past 8pm.

StoneColdAtheist 2008-06-15 06:06:00 PM
Subby, does the new law make him slightly less popular than OBL, or slightly less unpopular?

/not that the difference is real crititcal...

milk_plus 2008-06-15 06:13:12 PM
I drove through central Pennsylvania a few years ago and they have a conspicuously high number of sex toy shops out that way. I think they must be getting boozed up and diddling themselves. God save the poor bastard who tries to tax Pennsylvania dildos.

PsychoPhil 2008-06-15 06:13:51 PM
PA exists to keep New Englanders from the rest of the US. It's only the very determined ones who have the stamina to spend the 4 hours driving across that hellhole to get out.

Of course, this leaves you in Ohio, though at least it gets better from then on.

Seriously, is there anything in PA anymore besides burning towns and closed coal mines? Oh, besides that gangland in the southeast corner, or that other gangland in the western part.

Lancaster's about the only nice part of the state, the rest can burn in hell (wait, it already is...)

Freezy Peak 2008-06-15 06:15:58 PM
Farkers complain about SUVs and U.S. dependency on oil. This tax subsidizes public transit to get SUVs off the road. Farkers will sacrifice a few drops of beer and a few dollars for the better good, right? Wait, not when it's their vice/hobby/property being taxed? Carry on then.

Dinjiin [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-06-15 06:16:00 PM
I have never liked the idea of taxing one industry that has little to nothing to do with the other.

Alcohol has little to do with roads, other than the transportation of said alcohol and DWI checkpoints. If public transit needs to be subsidized, then raise the fuel tax, road tolls and/or general property taxes.

Reminds me of the tax on telephones used to pay for the Spanish-American War. That war enabled telephones in what direct way?

PsychoPhil 2008-06-15 06:16:49 PM
Oh, duh:
The 10 percent drink tax, in effect since January, was pushed along by Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato to subsidize public transit.

Here's a better idea: Get rid of the deadwood at SEPTA. Seriously, a 3 car train doesn't need 5 people running it...

I have family up in Pittsburgh. Apparently, you are under the mistaken premise that the Port Authority will spend those tax dollars well.

The Port Authority around the early 1980s had ridership then was about 100 million a year and had about 2,800 employees, almost 1,000 buses and about 90 trolleys. As of 2006 it had a ridership of 70 million people and about 3,000 employees. And the Port Authority budget had gone up 42 percent faster than inflation since 1982.

I live in God-forsaken Flori-duh and even I can attest to the fact that Pennsylvania is indeed a shiathole.

Of course, the fact that I am from Butler may have something to do with that outlook. Anyone who has even driven past Butler knows what I mean. It can suck the life from your soul even in a car doing 70 MPH.

But then again, I did live all over the state (Pittsburgh, Stroudsburg, Pottstown, Sunbury and several other places - Dad was in the hotel business - kind of like being an Army brat). None of the other places are much better.

tonesskin [TotalFark] 2008-06-15 06:42:50 PM
OMG GUYZ PA IS SO COOL HOW DARE SUBBY MAKE FUN OF IT!

Apparently PA is not the home of thick skin. There is a farking Florida tag. Everywhere is fair game.

You'll get over it.

everlastinggobstopper 2008-06-15 06:43:50 PM
Subby, you suck.

Yeah, some parts of PA blow and their policy on alcohol sales is anachronistic, but it is FAR from a shiathole.

And as for all those silos, NeverDrunk23, those are kinda handy to have around when you grow crops. If PA is boring, try visiting the midwest some time.

Lumoclear 2008-06-15 06:43:53 PM

Get over it, people. It's a dime for every watered-down dollar draft. If that's a financial hardship, you probably need to cut back for other reasons!
