There's a slight edge in total populations because typically the female's increased genetic redundancy makes them the more stable type (men tend to have more of the instabilities that drive evolution, probably because raising the potential of the mother's mutations conflicting with a child would be bad for breeding). Also, often "men" in that context actually means "desirable men" i.e. attractive ones with good incomes who are willing to commit, especially to the extent of marriage -- these are rare because by the time you're a spinster in your 40s reading those kinds of magazines, most of those types are (obviously) already married, and thus unavailable. Nothing really complicated about that.
