The US certainly felt the right to go into other countries to "defend us and the world" from "serious threat", so why can't Afghanistan?

I was actually proud of our work in Afghanistan until... the Afghans arrested a journalism student for insulting islam, convicted him, and sentenced him to death. If that's the kind of freedom we brought to Afghanistan, we might as well have not bothered in the first place and let the bastards rot in their own filth and hate and backward ignorance. :)

Unlikely, because the US and NATO seem to be with them on this one. And rightfully so; it's just not acceptable for militants to be able to cross over from Pakistan, launch attacks and be able to return without repercussion. Karzai's dead right on this one.

alybaba: I thought they were having the Americans bomb our soldiers like they did earlier this week?

Yeah, that was pretty farking terrible. But then again, we've got thousands of troops just sitting around in an area crawling with militants not doing much of anything (now that we've apparently inked a new "deal" with Mehsud"), so I wouldn't say that our own government is entirely blameless in this matter either.

The Beacon Man: FTFA: Hamid Karzai, yesterday threatened to attack Taliban insurgents on Pakistani soil, saying his war-torn country had a right to do so out of "self-defence".

He is 100% correct. Enough is enough.

Yes, yes, the right of self defense is correct in theory. But. let's try to be realistic for once. Karzai's own personal security is provided by Americans. There are thousands of US and NATO troops in Afganistan because Karzai's government can't handle the Taliban within the country. Warlords or Taliban really control the countryside, not Karzai. So just how is Karzai going to attack anything inside Pakistan?

Hmm, do I? Don't I?

Nope, no place for truth and understanding here. Read a guy named Gwynne Dyer folks, he has been telling it like it is for many years, and "The Mess They Made" is the single most researched, supported and realistic version of the mistakes, the plans gone wrong and the likely results of these sorts of uber words, with the likely and probable results of the actions in the real world. Not all the answers, and not all the reasons, but more than the average attention spans worth of facts and results.

When the US leaves Iraq, this entire section of the globe is going to resettle like a 3D Tetris game gone sideways, and the rubble is going to affect a large portion of humanity for a very long time to come. Including you and me. Like that or not.

The difference being, of course, that these militants aren't attacking a "fundamentalist Muslim" nation. They're just taking pot shots at Afghan and NATO troops.

Pakistani intelligence is definitely colluding with the Taliban, that's always been a given. I've always thought it was a stupid and short-sighted policy, but it's based on the premise that the Americans will leave Afghanistan to collapse leaving an opportunity to fill in the power vacuum once again, which isn't exactly improbable seeing how the war has been handled so far.

Regardless, the Americans should just be more careful about collateral damage, especially since public opinion has been turning away from the Taliban in Pakistan, which is the really crucial battle in the War on Terror.

I was not particularly pleased with what I heard (new window) in this interview.

Afghanistan seemed like a place to fix something. But I'm not optimistic of late.

Think about this. What if the Afgan Govt. signs a defense pact with Inda. There goes the nuke option for the Pakis. Packistan is one of the most radical sources of Islam that exists. The government does not control the areas that the radicals are launching attacks from. It is also where OBL is most likey to be.

I also noted how Afganistan said how many people have tried to invade and they failed.

This might get interesting in a good way.
