Mexicans want to know where oil money has gone
An expected bonanza for Mexico's state-run oil company hasn't happened, and conspiracy theories are rampant.

Saturday, June 14, 2008

MEXICO CITY - Where did all the oil money go?

"Mexico, many here believed, would be swimming in petrodollars by now thanks to record global oil prices that are nearly double what they were a year ago. Some experts pegged the potential windfall for Mexico at more than $20 billion this year if prices stay high.

But the Mexican government announced last month that not only was there no surplus oil money, but that Pemex, Mexico's nationalized oil company, had actually lost nearly $1 billion in the year's first three months."

Darth Shatner 2008-06-15 01:02:40 PM
Gas is cheaper in Mexico because of a government subsidy intended to keep inflationary forces in check.

It's too bad there are no mexicans left in mexico to but the gas.

Has anyone been to TJ lately? Used to be fireworks and cheap booze - now it's pharmacies filled with cheap pills. I saw an Amish family there buying pills a couple years ago.
So these Mexican people are coming to the US to get work, and we're going to Mexico to buy cheap gas and pills.
And the president is and oil man and his sidekicks are pharmaceutical cronies.
What the fark is oging on here?

So gas isn't really cheaper, you just pay part of it to the tax man.

My mom has been crossing the border from BC to Washington state for years for cheaper gas. Right now they are paying the equivalent of 5.50 a gallon for gas in the Vancouver area.

Do you know the way to Mordor 2008-06-15 04:09:45 PM
Meanwhile, down under, a similar thing has been happening between the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland.

Queensland has bee subsidising cheap petrol (what AUssies call "gas," so the New South Welsh near Queensland (or "Mexicans") as they call those south of the border) have been driving up to take advantage.

But soon they won't be able to- all Queensland driving licenses will be reissued to include a special barcode that proves you are a Queensland resident. This means no barcode- NO CHEAP PETROL.

Here's the link- http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,23793981-5016966,00.html

Mind you, a story about Mexico and gas? I'm going for the low hanging fruit here- Eat Mexican food, and you'll have plenty of gas!

Bronto Saurus 2008-06-15 04:34:05 PM
Of course, that's not counting the two and a half hour wait, idling away all that cheap gas, to cross the border.

Sounds like a false economy to me.

It's almost twice as expensive a mile away, so I'm thinking if you manage to not idle away half your tank in transit you'd still come up on top. Plus donkeys, lead-laced candies and pills.

IDK, only time I ever crossed into Mexico was down by El Centro into Mexicali, it was like walking into the 60's (buses,cars,etc...)

Because while you are sitting in the line not moving, there is a law requiring you to run your car, right?? RIGHT??

I also got a massage which really relaxed me and took away most of my stress. After that I ate at a nice restaurant called Cafe Especial. I had some delicious carne asada. I also indugled in the hot dogs wrapped in bacon they sell on the many street carts.

Mmmmmmmmm Bacon wrapped hot-dogs from a TJ street cart!

Obviously they need to hire this guy:

static.flickr.com

I also have to wonder how many of these people sneaking south of the border for cheap gas are also anti-immigration, pro-border fence Rethuglican bigots. If someone like that is caught filling up in Tijuana, I'd like to see him in the donkey show, as the donkey. Then they ought to steal his car, cell phone and money, drop his ass off about 30km south of Mexicali, and make him hoof it back north. Make it a real authentic Mexican travel experience!
