Sounds like what I had to do to get my driver's license.

Doesn't the US already have a test like that for citizenship? I wasn't aware there were countries that didn't already have such a cursory national history/civics test as part of becoming a citizen.

FTA: "Many Germans would not pass the test," said opposition Green MP Hans-Christian Stroebele, a claim backed up by a mini-poll conducted by the daily Berliner Zeitung.

This is practically irrelevant. If you're gonna change your citizenship you have to earn it, and if it means to learn what most of the natives don't know/don't care than God-damn it you pretty much have to.

Yes, I know I'm mexican and we're the cause of your immigration problem. But, I think we're the ones to blame because and, quite frankly, we don't do (or don't do enough) jack shiat about our country. This is why I've chosen to stay and try to improve, in any way, my country, and I know there's a few other mexicans thank think like me.

In architecture school we've been given chances to either move and study/work in Canada, Spain, and Germany. There's a lot of chances there and they're offering these oportunities to the high-grade students, and in the case of Germany, plenty of benefits if you start a family there.

I agree on that one (being an expat myself).

I'd be more interested in hearig what qualifies as "adequate German" - will you be denied citizenship if you don't know that "an" takes the dative, whereas "durch" takes the accusative? Tourist German is easy to learn. Correct German is freakin' hard.

I'm a US citizen living in Germany, but I'm not planning to go for German citizenship. I would have if I was able to take dual citizenship, but I can't.

In addition, my wife IS a German citizen. This way it works out fine whichever country we're in.

Because for some reason the Main is a male river whereas the Oder and most other rivers in Germany are female rivers (maybe they run red for a few days a month but the Rhine, Main, Neckar etc. don't?) Either city is supposedly where the Franks forded the respective river.

That's true..but I've asked quite a number of native speakers why two different rivers have two different genders (der Rhein, aber die Oder). No one has been able to come up with any good explanation for this, although the word for "river" is "der Fluss".

------------------------
No, because "dem" in this case is the dative form of "der." Almost all rivers are "der" nouns.

ok, open question. I do want to be an EU citizen. I'm american, just a little bit south of boston my whole life, except the 3 months i lived in amsterdam when i was younger and richer.

What is the best way to go about getting a job and relocating? I took 8 years of spanish, but don't want that area. I am halfway decent at dutch, rosetta stone and total immersion into newspapers and whatnot. I want to live in the benelux area, either nederland (not amsterdam) or flanders. I have 10 years experience IT-wise, no programming, but running networks and such. Ireland is an option, i'd work there for 5 years if need be, just to get the citizenship.

any advice? i miss the citizenship through grandparent route by a generation. I grew up speaking italian, but that was gone by age 7, but if italy had the jobs, i'd do it. I don't want to turn this into a political thing, but i just want to move to europe. Culture and history, and i like the lifestyle. Any eurofarkers or expats have any good advice? yes, i've read the expatica website. Should i just go on vacation and try to knock up a dutch girl?

Erik_Emune 2008-06-15 02:37:39 PM
Man, the Grammar Mavens on Fark know their sh.t!

The rivers in SW Germany are masculine and the rest are feminine, an takes the dative, so:

die Oder, "an" takes dative which turns "die" to "der", so "an der Oder"

der Main, "an" still takes dative, "der" becomes "dem", "an dem Main", contracts to "am Main".

No wonder English is considered easier to learn. It's crazy, but not that crazy.

German rivers are mostly feminine, foreign rivers are masculine. With exceptions, of course. (It's not German grammar without exceptions.)

Although it isn't the Netherlands, Denmark is running at around 2.5% unemployment and handing out foreign worker passes pretty easily at the moment. My friend is getting paid $35 an hour for delivering mail on a bike, so I imagine you could find a decent salary. Danish is needed for citizenship, though there are free government classes.

Unless you're exceptionally talented in some professional field or other, marriage is probably your best bet. It is no easier to move to the EU than it is moving to the US.

If you're into computer networking, Cisco has major presences in Belgium and Ireland, and they may be willing to sponsor relocation for someone truly talented, but you'd better be sharp.

I'm all for knocking up Dutch girls but in order to get EU citizenship you need to get citizenship of a country in the EU first and that depends on the country at hand, each has their own rules. Check the embassies of all the large countries, the UK is probably out of bounds with the 5 year rule being in force. France is easy enough to get citizenship if you like being in the foreign legion. Remember, beggars can't be choosers, so try for one of the smaller crappier more third world countries, they will like your American money, or take some coca cola or pepsi to their embassy and you should get a citizenship offer straight away.

Yeah this is true. And even then, you may have to STAY married for a long time (5+ years) before you are granted citizenship. So don't screw around with your Dutch wife.

Loki-L 2008-06-15 03:01:56 PM
Actually Hitler only got his German citizenship through a really unorthodox manouver thanks to some party friends who pulled strings for him.

The citizenship test in question might sound hard at first but considering the many exceptions and the fact that they actually give you all the question beforehand to study it really should not keep anyone away who is interested in getting German citizenship.

Yes- or at least marry one. I have an EU "green card"-- and I don't even live in the EU. Cool stuff.

It will probably be easier finding a foreign student in the US, and hooking up with her there. Then get married. Eventually they all want to move back--- and she will be begging you.

As an expat, I see no reason to acquire foreign citizenship. I like to easily return to the US.

mr. Belvedere 2008-06-15 03:09:48 PM
There is a certain nation in this world who feels that its people, due to their inherent supremity, should be exempted from such tests; that if said people choose to emigrate, they should be granted citizenship without any questions asked, otherwise, accusations of violation of human rights are soon to follow. They refuse to learn the language of the country they are moving to, and instead, try to make everybody else speak their language; if that fails, the human rights stick comes out again.

Sounds like the US, but it isn't.
