It's a mean and stupid thing to do, but I can't figure how tying somebody to a tree overnight alone could be fatal. Dehydration? Ropes too tight?

Could be hypothermia or maybe a blood clot. I bet it was hypothermia, personally. Even in summertime, it can get really cold in the country at night.

That being said, what is going through the heads of these people? Does this sound like a good idea to anyone here? Would you ever, in a million years, have thought about this as a good form of punishment? Man, this makes me want to kick the dad in the junk repeatedly, and slap the mom about a hundred times.

Or it could have been the dense smoke from the wildfires in the area.

Worst. Troll. Evar!

Drunk Astronaut 2008-06-15 10:14:43 AM
Overnight temps were in the upper 70, so it was not hypothermia. I agree with the poster who said that the kid was probably overcome by the heavy smoke from a 40,000 acre wildfire near NC's coast that has blown heavy smoke all over the eastern half of the state as the winds shifted. The family mentioned was pretty close to the action and in their area there was a state warning of Code Purple air -- dangerous for anyone to be outside in for any extended time at all.

This story broke the same week as another mother was (new window)convicted for first degree murder for smothering a four year by wrapping him in a blanket so tightly that he suffocated.

What in the fark is going on with parents in rural North Carolina?

I don't know the story's full details but I have known people who do this stupid shiat.

When I was young we had a "Christian" neighbor. They were actually very nice people, but these were the people who come to mind if you say "Bible Thumper". I don't know if the dumbasses in this story were such, but I wouldn't be surprised.

They one time punished on of their kids by forcing him to sleep in a tent, outside in the humid Missouri summer - no water, fan, etc. At least 1 day, maybe 2. My mom felt so sorry for him she sneaked some watermelon to him.

Later in life he turned into a gay military man. Looks like that good old fashion punishment worked well.

FTFA: He then untied the boy Wednesday morning before tying him back to the tree Wednesday night. The boy's stepmother found him unresponsive around 4:30 Thursday afternoon.

So, let's say the kid was tied up at around 9-10pm on Wed--that would make it at least 18 hours. Add to that a heat wave that hit the East Coast last Wed (temps in NC hit over 100) and you've got one major case of exposure/heat stroke.

I should have RTFA a little closer, I was under the impression that he was simply tied out `overnight', if it was overnight + the better part of a day, it makes more sense.

I have a possible explanation for the death. I imagine they tied him with his hands behind his back. Put your hands behind your back as far as you can and try to breathe, and notice that your chest can't swell as it normally would. This position would make it hard to breathe, especially if when he fell asleep, he leaned forward. Add in the "whole lotta smoke" factor, and I think you have your explanation.

Similar to how people died by crucifixion. Poor kid.

This is what happens when fathers are given custody of their children in a divorce.

Who cares what the actual cause of death is? They killed their kid. Fry 'em. He'd probably been mistreated for years.

Police arrested the boy's father - Brice Brian McMillan - and step mother - Sandra Elizabeth McMillan - and charged them with first-degree murder and felony child abuse. They're being held in Edgecombe Co. Jail with no bond.

Good.

/That first line was joke, all right? For all the guys who are always complaining, "Men never get a fair shake in a custody situation!"

Interrupted Infinitum 2008-06-15 10:37:36 AM
Damn. When I was reading that article, all I could think of was what the kid's last thoughts were. Imagine just sitting there, slowly dying, thinking "So this is how I am going to die. Tied to a tree by my father."

Just thought the local Republican redneck Christian would chime in:

1) You spank kids when they misbehave badly. You don't beat them or burn them or starve them or tie them up.
2) If your 13-year old still needs spankings, you are full of fail.
3) It is totally normal for people in the sticks to have domestic animals.
4) If, by Christian, you mean they live in a Christian nation, I'm sure they are. If you follow the actual definition of "Christian", meaning "Christ-like", well, not so much.

On the other hand, if your father failed to tie you to a tree and let you die, it's the day to thank him :)

Thanks, Dad!
