Yes, I understand there is a flood. Yes, I know the Cubs are good this year. Just have to poke fun at the floods for all my friends and family in Iowa.

The Cubs came from behind to beat Nashville, 5-4.

Well, there is that...

Hmmm...um...isn't the whole point of the entertainment industry to perform for an audience? I guess it goes to show you how much they care about their fans.

IAmRight [TotalFark] 2008-06-15 02:07:06 AM
that's a team record. I think some other minor league team did a promotion where they refused to allow anyone in so they could set the record for lowest attendance. (they invited everyone to watch from some nearby bars or something)

Actually, the point of minor league baseball is to get players ready for the major leagues, where the money really is... any cash brought in from minor league games (and I can't imagine it's very much) is gravy on top.

I'm surprised Nashville didn't do better. They're used to not having an audience.

Dear Cubs,

Farking crooked oil companies and government and their cronie banks took all my money, we'll get back to you after the global revolt

Sincerely,
Every American Fan

The local Daytona Cubs are actually quite entertaining for six bucks.

Don't the Cubs get good attendance numbers?

4NSpy 2008-06-15 05:33:34 AM
it would be a better story if it was 1 fan. Just some guy sitting all alone, cheering and yelling shiat.

I tried this once at a Pirates game but it was a free ticket day so there ended up being 2 other people there.

Yeah, at Wrigley. And the stadium isn't shut down due to the worst natural disaster to hit the area in a century or two. And it's the major league team instead of a minor league affiliate.

/I've been to a few Iowa Cubs games. The attendance has never been overwhelming.

Well, this answers the ancient Zen riddle:

"If the Cubs have a late-inning lead and nobody is around to see it, do they still choke?"

I guess not.

billyboyxoxox 2008-06-15 06:09:08 AM
There would have been fans if they had been allowed to show up. The Iowa Cubs are a good ball team like their parent team this year.

GO CUBS!!!

Sheriff McLawdog 2008-06-15 07:28:19 AM
When the Nashville sounds came through Salt Lake City to play the Bees, the guys in their bullpen almost got into a fight with with some asshole in the bleachers.

Coolest game of the season.

"What the f*ck am I supposed to do, go out there and let my f*ckin' players get destroyed every day and be quiet about it? For the f*ckin' nickel-dime people who turn up? The motherf*ckers don't even work. That's why they're out at the f*ckin' game. They oughta go out and get a f*ckin' job and find out what it's like to go out and earn a f*ckin' living. Eighty-five percent of the f*ckin' world is working. The other fifteen percent come out here. A f*ckin' playground for the c*cksuckers."

We miss you Mr. Elia

Just wait until they try to determine the average revenue per attendee for the game.

So, my Dad called last night and told me about this- I was born in DSM, grew up there. For those unfamiliar with the city, Sec Taylor Stadium (you call it what you want, I'll call it what I want) is right down on the river on the south east side of downtown.

Er, you know, where all the water goes?

While the bars and restaraunts on Court Avenue were opening back up again, and the parking lots had finally drained of water, and my father said that he thought even the bridges were back open again, the real reason they didn't want to have the game attended was because of the extra traffic it would run through downtown. Baseball traffic can be worse than commuter traffic when you're in it. The numbers aren't great, but there can be a fair amount of people there, especially if you go on a night some business is having a company event.

Glad the Cubbies won, though, Dad hadn't heard last night.

They let everyone in after the 5th inning and the attendance could be recorded as zero. This is a LEGITIMATE zero.

You know, for a story that has to do with flooding in Iowa, perhaps this wasn't the most appropriate ad...

Saw them play the Dunedin Blue Jays Thursday - they were winning something like 6-1 in the fourth, so we went home.

Go Cubs!

It's too bad they wouldn't let us in. The weather was perfect for a day at the ball yard.

I get steamed every time attendance to baseball games is concerned...

I'm not that old, but I remember going to an actual Chicago Cubs game for $8.00. Dennis Eckersley started, and Ryne Sandberg hit a 420' homer onto Waveland Ave off Charlie Hudson. We sat in the upper deck, but Wrigley's an old park where you can still see what's going on from there.

Old Tiger Stadium was even better. I sat in the last row of the upper deck and could see players' facial expressions with the naked eye. In one game, both Kerry Wood and Matt Anderson (his ML debut) slung their 100+ MPH fastballs, and boy could you hear that catcher's mitt POP!!!

Every once in awhile (as in every 3 years or so), I'll get free tickets to a Tigers' game from work. Otherwise, I'm not shelling out $20 or more to sit in the upper deck of one measly MLB game at Comerica and wonder if the batted ball is a grounder or a fly.

/end rant

Sec Taylor (I'll call it what I want, too...) is a very pleasant place to catch a game, actually. Went there for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Best wishes to all Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and other midwest Farkers dealing with this godawful flooding.

If you thought anyone was going to show up for the cubs minor league affiliate, YOU LOST!

Forget turning off your sets, just don't show up to the ballpark!

Usernameaboutnothing: Don't the Cubs get good attendance numbers?

The Cubs have sold-out attendances regularly and have for years now.

As a Cubs fan, I'm glad they're doing well, but I miss the good old days when you could go to Wrigley Field on game day and get a few tickets for cheap.

Outshined_One [TotalFark] 2008-06-15 10:22:30 AM
I always enjoy going to Peoria Chiefs games. O'Brien Field is a nice place to catch a game. I've gone there and sat three rows behind home plate for $5 a ticket, which is pretty snazzy.

Sometimes the doctoral thesis subject is just so obvious.

How To Create a Negative Attendance for Record Setting Purposes.

1)Have several health challenged people attend the first game of a double header. They count as attendees of the first game.

2)Don't allow anyone to enter the stadium after the first game.

3)If you are lucky someone will die during the second game thereby creating a negative attendance.

4)If none of the attendees cooperate during the second game simply play a third, fourth, fifth game and so forth until the negative record is achieved.

It may become necessary to restrict all food, beverage and medicine intake by the attendees until the desired result is achieved.

I hate when bankers come in to my apartment and leave me a briefcase of money and tell me I have to spend it or else.
