Now if only America would follow suit.

Nicer than what? Badgers?

ElQue: Nicer than what? Badgers?

I would say nicer than wounded wolverines. But not by much.

Just like any sufficiently large sample, any mainstream political party reflects the society at large in which it exists. As for America, that means that Dems and Reps each contain a fair number of patriots, a bunch of assholes, and a vast majority somewhere between the two extremes.

Each party takes a turn at overreaching. It just happens to be near the end of the Republicans' turn right now.

I would assume it works the same way (more or less) in the UK, but I have never been there longer than a few weeks at a time, so I really couldn't say. Sure, cultural differences are present between Brits and Americans, but most people are assholes the world over, in my experience.

"New study finds that right-wingers really are nicer people"

People think that others who smile are nice...

You mean they smile more? Are you referring to the smile they have while looting the US treasury, or do you mean the smile they have while lying to the country and starting a war which made their friends obscenely wealthy, or that smile they have when they're paying only $1500 at auction for the foreclosed home you paid paid $500k for, or do you mean the smile they have when they give Exxon a 1.2 billion dollar tax break while it's 10's of billions in profit a month, or the smile while claiming the loss of American jobs to foriegn countries is just the free market system but, when their buddies mismanage their corporations, they give them billions of your tax dollars to bail them out?

Wiping their ass with the constitution, ignoring federal law, screwing the system by exploiting every imaginable loop hole. Wire tapping, torturing, illegal federal contracts, cronyism.,

Just remember, sociopaths are the nicest yet most dangerous people on the planet.

juggs 2008-06-15 12:06:05 AM
As a nice right-winger, I am not getting much of a kick out of these replies, but I'm going to be polite about it and hug my dad (its Father's day, ya know).

Con_Authority: Are you referring to the smile they have while looting the US treasury

Well, FDR got us off the gold standard. IIRC JFK got us off using any silver to back up the currency. Once that was all good and done the Fed could just print money willy-nilly.

Con_Authority: or do you mean the smile they have while lying to the country and starting a war which made their friends obscenely wealthy

I, and I presume you too, do not appreciate a politician from the state of Texas using his position as President of the United States to present false information to Congress in support of a war, being given clearance for that, and then channeling no-bid contracts back to Haliburton (KBR) for reconstruction of the country's infrastructure.

LBJ turned 2 friggen bullet holes in a ship, that shouldn't have ever been where it was, into the Vietnam war. 58,000 dead and Haliburton (KBR) got rich off it. Look into KBR's history. You wanna know why they're a powerhouse? Look to LBJ. He was handing them contracts before he got to the position of POTUS. They bankrolled his campaign into the House.

Get off your "Democrats are better than Republicans" high horse. They're all evil farks by nature.

"more generous to charity"? How about you take that measure again without counting their church donations as charity?

Financing attempts to turn a country into a theocracy isn't charity.

Blaud 2008-06-15 03:35:26 AM
that's because they don't have to deal with rightwingers.

heinousjay 2008-06-15 03:35:27 AM
Nicer, or just pathological?

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-06-15 03:36:01 AM
Of course English right wingers are quite a bit different from American ones. So not like the conclusion is transferable from there to here.

TheCommunistCow 2008-06-15 03:36:03 AM
Do these studies only exist in the author's magical fairy world or is there anything to actually back this pile of crap up?

KramericaWallet 2008-06-15 03:36:11 AM
Both the World Values Survey and the General Social Survey reveal Left-wingers are more likely to rate 'high income' as an important factor in choosing a job, more likely to say 'after good health, money is the most important thing', and agree with the statement 'there are no right or wrong ways to make money'.

That is messed up.

we_hates [TotalFark] 2008-06-15 03:36:12 AM
Maybe there's a certain freedom from tension that comes from not giving a shiat about anything.

Sabyen91 [TotalFark] 2008-06-15 03:36:14 AM
It is cute. Are you righties going to listen to the Daily Fail on this one? The Enquirer says Republicans are nicer than Martians but not as nice as Venusians.

WhyteRaven74: Of course English right wingers are quite a bit different from American ones. So not like the conclusion is transferable from there to here.

Yeah, that is a good point. Brit righties would be Gore and Kerry.

sifusalinas 2008-06-15 03:37:38 AM
People on the right wing appear to be nicer because they pile on all their anger onto very specific groups of people. Left wingers appear less nice because they spread their relative indifference to everyone equally.

/huh?
//what?

TheCid 2008-06-15 03:38:02 AM
"Research also indicates those on the Left are less interested in getting married: 30 per cent of those who were 'very liberal' said it was important, in contrast to 65 per cent of Right-wingers.

While 69 per cent of those who called themselves 'very conservative' said it was important for them to have children, only 38 per cent of corresponding liberals agreed."

Once again, this ridiculous article begs the question of the religious viewpoint and assumes that anything running counter to traditional Christian values is bad.

Marriage has something to do with niceness? This is a huge fail of an article.

xen0blue 2008-06-15 03:39:26 AM
it's because us right-wingers take responsibility for their own actions and don't actively try to think up new things to be offended about

technicolor-misfit 2008-06-15 03:40:47 AM
Hard to carry this over to America... compared to most of the developed world we just have two right wings, far right and right lite.

Our mainstream right wing is so extreme it's barely comparable to any significant factions in other western countries.

OmniPilot 2008-06-15 03:40:52 AM
Well considering how everyone always says that America's politics are way to the right of the rest of the world (save for Islamofascistan)....doesn't that mean that America's liberals are England's conservatives and therefore England's liberals are America's psycho moonbats?

Benjamin the Rogue 2008-06-15 03:41:58 AM
Well, considering how the author of the article also wrote the friendship building book titled Do as I Say (Not as I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy, you'll have to excuse me if I don't embrace this story.

opus2k7 2008-06-15 03:42:35 AM

liberals say 'i feel'

let the feelings begin!

TheCid: "more generous to charity"? How about you take that measure again without counting their church donations as charity?

If the case is England, then giving to the church is a different issue than in the US. And so giving to charity is just that, giving to charity.

Sabyen91: Yeah, that is a good point. Brit righties would be Gore and Kerry.

Yep. That's why I get a chuckle when they bring up "far right" politicians from Europe on US news shows. Most of the "far right" politicians would at the absolute worst be very moderate Republicans. Always something to hear people going "zOMG they're going to elect a conservative oh noes!" and I'm thinking, yeah a conservative who would find US social programs sorely lacking.

EwoksSuck 2008-06-15 03:43:32 AM

In all fairness, biased thought patterns could yield one person who both agreed and disagreed with that statement. If you view the question from a somewhat optimistic point of view, you get the response, *cue spacy hippy voice* "Why yes, no one should have to ape the paradigm pushed by corporate society. If I want to only sell eco-responsible goods, or accept barter of goods and services, then that's my business." From a pessimistic POV, you get, "Oh hell no. There is zero justification for running a dead child hooker disposal service, or selling crack to kindergarteners, or defrauding pensioners."

I know who else likes to have lots of children. Uneducated people. Maybe the correlation he missed is that lots of uneducated people are right-wingers!

just look at that whole delegates debacle

this seems like a very well researched article!

'I'll have babies if you pay for them,' one Leftie blogger said on the social networking website yelp.com.

Irrefutable proof.

Psst in Europe even most conservatives accept unwed mothers and gays as just a part of life. Being, as they are, divorced from any sort of religious rhetoric or expectation of such rhetoric, well they get to be human.

Axolotl 2008-06-15 03:47:11 AM
CONSERVATIVES /= RIGHTWINGERS

The study asks for Americans to self-classify as "conservative" or "liberal." Given the pummeling the rightwing has pulled on the term "liberal" over the past quarter century, many Americans are adverse to calling themselves that, even when it accurately reflects their beliefs.

The author then conflates "conservative" and "rightwing." The current Republican party, and their base, are rightwing radical authoritarians, and not conservatives in the slightest. They call themselves "conservatives," but you can call yourself anything you want and that won't make it so.

In the article, the survey mentioned is one in which people agree or disagree with statements that are used to determine how selfless, nice and happy they are.

The alternative explanation is that right-wingers are bigger liars than left-wingers.

/Discuss.
