What good is a knighthood in a symbolic figurehead monarchy that's no longer a world power?

I'd rather have knighthood than that flaming Kennedy Honor. Also Ian McKellen brought his lover and introduced him to the queen when he was knighted.

I guess he is really in the wheelchair because he is carrying huge brass balls in his pants.

I might not agree with his ideas about how tax money should be spent (I don't oppose research, I oppose the idea that you have the right to shoot people who don't want to pay for it) , but good for him for realizing that political "honors" handed out by governments are a pointless institution .

Good for him... it's about time someone stood up for science and research for the sake of knowledge. If only some other countries' scientists could walk as straight a path. The curiosity embodied in the scientific method is what really separates us from all other creatures, and when that curiosity is given a cash value, we are all brought a step down as a species.

Fun anecdote: one of my high school science teachers wound up rooming with Steve H at a professional conference. Apparently he spent the better part of the entire event drunk off his ass. Incredibly funny guy.

I suppose some of the benefits of being stuck in a wheelchair and talking through a computer are not stumbling drunkedly down the stairs and not slurring your speech.

If being knighted helps you solve scientific problems then I say go for it. Until then lets not waste out time talking to people whose claims are based on birthright.

Apparently, being farking briliant and having Lou Gehrig's disease gives you the God given right to tell everyone to "fark off. You and your policies are wrong," and get away with it.

Then again, why the fark not?

Hawking has managed to live one hell of a lot longer than most with his disease and make contibutions to science far and beyond most everyone else. More power to him. Frankly, I hope he is getting at least daily blow jobs, if not on the hour.
