There's a lot I would like to tell him, but the last time I tried (15 years ago or so) he turned it all back on me. So I guess I would say, "You were the adult, not me. I've lived without a Dad for more than 20 years now because of decisions you made and that's all on you." And leave it at that.
/ Been in contact with him since, but he still doesn't get it.

2008-06-14 10:08:30 PM
We could probably have a decent conversation if just once, for a fleeting moment, you ever admitted that you sucked as a dad 90% of the time. You neglectful, racist, opportunistic prick.
But by all means, keep playing the role of the strong, silent type. I have lived the past 15 years without your "guidance", such as it is... and I continue to be a better dad than you ever were simply by being present in my child's life. You provided a perfect template for the ways not to behave as a parent, so I guess I should thank you for that at least. Rest assured, it will be the only thanks you shall ever get from me.

My biological father died when I was 18 months old by a drunk driver. 30 years later my mom met a guy and we became best friends. I introduced him as my father. He died 5 years ago (Prostate cancer). His ashes are on my mom's shelf. When she dies she wants me to pour into Otter Creek together.

Love ya dad... but until you admit how you have repeatedly ignored and marginalized your children in favor of your new wife, stepson and stepdaughter, you will continue to wonder why your three children all choose to spend as little time as possible with you.
(still taking him out to dinner though)
(my sister will be there, though it was like pulling teeth)

2008-06-14 10:50:22 PM
Dad, you're a good person but you should have never ever had kids. I know that little Kansas farm girl was a cutie and you married her even though she had to drop out of high school to have me back in 1962. But you didn't make a very good father. Mom talked about how, even as a toddler I would do things like intentionally spill the tall fizzy glass of Pepsi and ice you had there by your side while watching the news after work.... just to get you to pay attention to me. Even if though I knew it would mean a spanking, at least you momentarily noticed I was alive.
But that is all behind us now.
Thanks for everything,
Happy Father's Day Dad!
All my love
