There's just something funny about the word "truncheon."

Is that a truncheon in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?

I think if it stays in his pocket, he's happy to see you.

In a police state, everyone is guilty of something. Except the criminals. They know who to bribe and how to stay out of trouble.

Damn right he should have gone to jail. He had intended to defend himself,
And from what I understand, in jolly old England, you are supposed to call the constable on the telly, explain the situation properly in Queens English and then politely wait for them to arrive to see whats all about.

Oh freddled gruntbuggling,
Thy nacturations are to me
As plurdled grabbleblotchits
On a lurgid bee.
Groop, I implore thee, my footing turlingdromes
And hooptiously drangle me
With crinkly binglewurgles,
For otherwise, I will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon,
See if I don't!

I like how the only charge to stick in the whole situation was possession of cannabis. Mighty fine police work.

It shouldn't be too hard. In the U.S. they're called telescoping batons. In fact that's what was used to attack skater Nancy Kerrigan. You could order one online at a site like this one or they might even be available at a shop that sell guns, pepper spray & other self-defense items.

So, another story where someone did a good deed, which is rare nowadays, and gets punished for it. Can we sadly go for a trifecta of stupid police?

Kome [TotalFark] 2008-06-14 05:11:22 PM
Kent Police and Senior Crown Prosecutor Janet Garnon-Williams said in a statement: 'A decision has been taken jointly to discontinue the case as there is not a realistic prospect of conviction.'

Why not just discontinue the case because it was a stupid charge to begin with?

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2008-06-14 06:03:05 PM
Jeez...BFD. Nothing happened to the guy. It isn't a cop's job to render a verdict on what happened or decide whether or not to press charges. Maybe they could have shown better judgment and not dragged him off, but when cops do that sort of thing (and they do, often), it doesn't make the news, leaving FARKers with nothing to whine about.

I have a couple of these. The can only be shipped to certain states. You cannot get them shipped to CA or NY.
I had mine shipped to my sister in AZ.

One was charged with possession of cannabis and fined £100 by Maidstone magistrates.

Just another example of thugs on drugs harassing innocent women.

Jeez...BFD. Nothing happened to the guy.

Ya. Aside from being arrested and threatened with prosecution, it all worked out great. Seriously, who doesn't want to get taken from their home to spend 12 hours in a cell after helping someone in distress?

Fortunately, it all worked out in the end since the thugs were released as well, so everyone should be happy.

That's just propaganda.

He called police and strapped on the false leg he has worn since his leg was amputated

Just for a second, I thought maybe the cops had arrested him because they classified his false leg as a truncheon. Thankfully, there wasn't that level of dumbassery.

/there wasn't yet...

Ah, my weapon of choice. I bought one and a decent butterfly knife at a gun show two years ago, and have only used it twice. I was living in a shiatty apartment complex and a group of wannabe gangbangers were always harassing my female roommate constantly. One night as we were going to a party she went out to the car a minute before me and as I came down I found 4 dudes circling her against the car talking nasty. I got all super crazy and had just the right amount of Jager in me to just come around the corner and charge em. I hit the first kid directly in the spine as I flung the baton out, and the next dude caught it directly across his forearm. The other two were pretty shocked that I just put two of their buddies down in a second, and backed off. We moved out the next week.

The other time I used it was to knock down a small tree while drunk.

So ya, Truncheons are pretty damn cool.

Thing is he wasn't threatened in any way shape or form with prosecution. He was arrested, and charged. Being charged means nothing, apart from the police charging you because they believe they arrested you for a crime. The crown prosecution service (public prosecutor) saw there was no case and he was let go. The charge doesn't go on his criminal record, you might be getting confused with being convicted, which he wasn't, or even cautioned, which again, he wasn't. Yeah, it's a pain in the ass for him, and a heck of an inconvenience but he was carrying an offensive weapon (granted it was to use reasonable force, and defend himself and those around him, which is perfectly legal in the UK).
I've always wondered if when things like this happen whether he could sue the police for wrongful arrest, anyone any clue ?

1000Monkeys 2008-06-14 06:32:43 PM
"Mr Beerling then hurried downstairs and went outside where he said his neighbour was being harassed by two men.
He tried to calm the men down while he waited for police. Officers later arrested both suspects and charged them with affray.
"

Wait, was she being attacked, threatened or was this just a loud argument?

dko 2008-06-14 06:34:01 PM
keep in mind that telescoping batons, or ASPs, as they are often referred to, may be illegal to own in your state or city. they are considered deadly weapons in Chicago and the whole state of IL and can not be owned by anyone other than police officers/MPs. this also extends to blackjacks.

Linky (new window)

gotta love chicago... although I do carry one of these everywhere i go and i don't believe it's entirely legal.

What does him having one leg and being a veteran have to do with anything? Only a worthless piece of dog shiat cop would arrest ANYONE for this under the circumstances. Sick. Although, maybe there is more to this story. Perhaps he drew a picture of himself beating a "brews (sic) on their heads" and didn't get the help he needed.

The_OcO 2008-06-14 06:40:49 PM
Ooo damn, Stun Batons are now only $50. I was planning as an upgrade adding a bayonet tip to my baton, but with the option of adding 80,000 volts I just don't know now...

It could be classed as an offensive weapon if it was taken out in public and used with intent.

Err, no. The police's approach was ridiculous, as is the law on this issue, but a folding baton is an offensive weapon per se.

This, on the other hand, is a legal carry:

You know it makes sense...

dko: gotta love chicago... although I do carry one of these everywhere i go and i don't believe it's entirely legal.

the problem is that if you're going to carry around a knife, you have to be willing to stab someone in a way that will stop their assault, like the eye, the neck, or an upward gouge to the heart or lung.

me, i'm not sure i'm into all that. it makes the truncheon sound like a much better choice.
