I've long held a dream of introducing "new" Metallica to the real Metallica and watching Cliff break a bottle of Heineken over Lars and James collective thick skulls.

christ man... Cliff Burton was an absolute beast on the four string. It's interesting to see the three most well known bass players in Metallica and compare:

Robert Trujillo - uses his fingers and has great skills on the bass
Jason Newsted - pick player with a super-intense stage presence
Cliff Burton - amazing skills on the bass (using his fingers) with a dominating stage presence

Metallica ended up hiring two bassists that each had a part of Cliff in them, but couldn't match everything Cliff embodied. They haven't been anywhere near as great after he passed.

/still a fan

I saw them a few years ago at RFK and it actually rocked. They were touring off St Anger and what I thought was funny was they played alot of old shiat like even 2 songs off Kill em All. They only play 2 songs off St Anger and both times almost the entire stadium sat down and then they would go to the old stuff and the place would go nuts again. I think they even know their new stuff blows ass.

Man, if only Metallica would just read Fark.com now and again they'd probably hang it up. I mean, there's like, 30 people on here that hate them! If they could pull their heads out of their asses and ignore the 30,000+ people that show up to their gigs for just a second and pay attention to the REAL MUSIC FANS on Fark.com, they'd see the light and disappear into obscurity.

Sigh, too bad all those screaming fans who like them keep distracting them from realizing they're worthless human beings.

You missed my point completely. Your idea of quality is different than others. You may feel you have an enlightened taste that is superior to the masses, but you can never prove it, sadly for you. The point is, there's a lot of wasted energy downright hating Metallica when you could, conversely, spend that energy enjoying something else.

I haven't liked their music since the Black Album. I would go to see them now anyway, for the chance to hear Master live or Battery, or even One.

The only bad Metallica is St. Anger (the album) except for .. uh.. one decent song on that collection.. umm. Frantic.
Which still could've been done WAY better.

I only know one person (out of an entire giant friends list of mostly metalheads) that actually likes that album, and he's the guy with all of the album covers tattooed onto him.

You want a lot of good stuff, go to livemetallica.com and pick it up there. Lots of killer free stuff, and you can buy new shows really freain cheep.

WaltzingMathilda: You may feel you have an enlightened taste that is superior to the masses, but you can never prove it, sadly for you.

Yeah we can. St. Anger. Empirical evidence old chap. They have gone to shiat, no question. Still great live, but terrible songwriters and lumbered with a horrible-and-getting-worse producer for years.

I'll never forget the day I hard Bob f***ing Rock was taking over from Fleming Rasmussen. I thought, "Well, that's that then."

Oh, and another reason to dislike them, which is quite provable: The way they treated Newsted over Justice. They degraded the sound of their own record as a hazing. Let me clarify that. They destroyed their own sound to make light of a member of their band, and they were that arrogant that they knew the fans would buy it anyway. If they were the best band in the world I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

I wasn't aware that Metallica was the only metal band to mix down the bass on their albums ... oh, and "not liking an album" isn't empirical evidence. It's exactly the opposite. It's an opinion.

My buddy is at Bonnaroo right now. He texted me every song they played last night, and I called him during the ones that I wanted to hear the most. The solo for AJFA was amazing even through a phone. I listened to the end of that song into James asking who wants to hear some Kill 'em All, and he was like "No..... NO!...... NO!..... NO REMORSE!

I seriously doubt it. Cliff basically made the band move from LA to SF and the band followed. Good thing too, the LA scene was a joke.

I think that Cliff was the moral compass for the band and when he died it allowed Lars and James to walk all over Kurt and grab the brass ring.
Lars chased the dollar to fulfill his Napoleon complex and James did it to keep the drugs coming in.

Cliff would have kept them in check...or quit.

Where did I EVER use the phrase "it's not quality" - where? I can't seem to find that phrase anywhere in what I've written.
Misquoting me to forward your self aggrandizing argument is weak sauce. I never said I was enlightened or that my tastes were superior, but you seemed compelled to point out what is clearly evident - that it's my opinion. So thanks for that Captain Obvious. Now what point did I miss here?

I said 35000+ fans at every gig don't hate them

You said the above in bold

I "summarized" ... I didn't "misquote"

You said you prefer quality and that I should try it, as though Metallica is *in fact* not quality. What was your point in responding in the first place if not to state your obviously superior taste? By stating you'd rather listen to something quality than someone who can draw in 35000+ people to a gig? Where you started and where you ended make no sense, friend.
