To be fair, this probably is almost meaningless (and I'm no McCain fan). Just stating a number doesn't really tell you whether they're carrying a balance forward. For example, your credit report will usually report your monthly statement balance even if you aren't carrying debt forward. So it's possible that that is just their monthly spending.

Bzzt and bzzt.

Bzzt once, because it's mostly his wife's tab, not his.
Bzzt again, because it's on charge cards, not credit cards. You're not supposed to carry a revolving balance on a charge card.

He has negative 100,000 dollars at least. If you're in debt you don't have money, you have debt. Don't feel too bad though, John McCain doesn't understand this simple premise either, that's why this is an issue.

He's saying McCain is rich, so $100k is not a massive amount of credit card debt to him.

Jeffrey.Rodriguez 2008-06-13 06:17:26 PM
Hasn't he said before that the economy wasn't one of his strong suits.

That being said, that seems like an awful lot of debt for a guy who is married into so much wealth.

Umm, you do understand that adding a negative number to a much larger positive number gives you a slightly smaller positive number, right?

Jeffrey.Rodriguez: Hasn't he said before that the economy wasn't one of his strong suits.

In his defense (sort of), it is a bit difficult to learn about the economy and finances when you only spend other people's money.

Jaakobi 2008-06-13 06:21:06 PM
lol anyone else remember Mike Gravel saying he stuck it to the credit card companies by having something like $80,000 in debt to them? i guess the difference is Gravel declared bankruptcy whereas McCain's got a rich wife

BMulligan 2008-06-13 06:21:31 PM
Since he can't fly on his donors' private jets any more, I'm guessing he's just doing it to earn the frequent flyer miles.

CrunchyCheetoFingers 2008-06-13 06:35:13 PM
He's worth an estimated $44Million.

$100K really isn't that much to him, or to anyone worth $44Million.

My question is why bother having a balance.

Thats like us keeping a $10 balance.

CrunchyCheetoFingers: My question is why bother having a balance.

Like I said upthread, we have no idea whether they are carrying a balance forward, or if that's just their monthly spending. They could be spending $100K/month and then paying it off every month.

Suicidal Writer 2008-06-13 06:43:07 PM
In 2004, Gravel had run up $85,000 in credit card debt due to a health crisis requiring multiple surgeries, and the money he'd spent pursuing his National Initiative. Urged to declare personal bankruptcy, Gravel at first hesitated. "And then I thought about it: 'My God, isn't this interesting? I'm going to get these 6 credit card companies who have been predators on normal people. I'm going to get them to contribute to the National Initiative.' And I filed bankruptcy just in a heartbeat & that was it.
Gravel (new window)

Haha

BobtheFascist 2008-06-13 06:46:41 PM
All things considered, that's not bad for a multi-millionaire. At one point in my life I was almost half that deep & I haven't made close to $1mil over the course of my working life.

Let's see -- she's worth about $100MM. At that level, and a lot below it, the line between business and personal blurs considerably. Some of that is business, some of that is recurring expense -- maybe they belong to an exclusive golf club that charges $25k/month, or several clubs.

And try buying a case of 1982 Château Lafite Rothschild -- it's running about $36,000. So, yeah, if I was worth $100 MM, I'd be spending about 100K/month, no biggie.

Could be, and are. Gravel hasn't been in the Senate since 1981.

You suppose that means he'll go after credit card companies?

Or is that about as likely as Obama going after anti-smoking legislation?

Well, they might have private jets and stuff. Put gas for your jet on the card regularly, and it wouldn't be too hard to get to that level of spending, especially combined with staying in fancy hotels, etc.

Considering Clinton has several million in debt, $100,000 is nothing to rich people.
