yeah... but the song sucks...

/*ducks* and yes... I hate squarepusher's bass playing, too. But his beats cannot be beat.

The sound quality in this clip is just awful. Can't listen to it even though it is Jaco.

That sucks and I hope to never ever hear it again.

A shame he looks like Gallagher in that video.

He should have been playing a bass shaped like the Sledge-o-matic

JuicenX 2008-06-13 03:49:49 PM
He's not black though...

Jaco's solo while on tour with Joni Mitchell (new window)

The director of this show should be shot. Jaco is playing godly bass riffs and what does he focus on? Joe Zawinul's back. idiot.

mekkab: //smoking conga work in this video, BTW!

Farkin' A right. Sam Clayton approves.

The congas were the first thing I noticed when the music started: "Woah, are they going to speed this up?"

Jaco and Joe were tight as hell. Man those guys were good.

Sadly, my Weather Report tunes are in the 12" black plastic disk format - need a stylus.

karmachameleon 2008-06-13 05:20:24 PM
Awesome song, awesome bass. The guys dissing Weather Report in this thread just don't know what they're missing, seriously.

Sounds quality blows, but whatever. That's par for the course on YouTube. It's still a pleasure to see Jaco any time.

If anyone is looking for a modern Weather Report, try out Tribal Tech, especially their early work from the 80s. The amazing Gary Willis on bass (lots of Jaco influence, but clearly has his own voice too), and the incomparable Scott Henderson (a Joe Zawinul protege) on electric guitar. Here's a clip: "Face First" with guest drummer at MIT (new window)

gmpilot 2008-06-13 05:23:34 PM
Don't get me wrong, he's an awesome bass player...but I really can't find this song that appealing. It sounds like it's from some cheap flash game...one where I turn the sound off after 30 seconds.

Are you serious? How so? It's you that has fialed my friend.

It's pretty much a general consensus within the music community that Newsted's work on And Justice For All is the unequivocal masterpiece by which all bass players measure their talent.

If you don't believe that you probably also don't think Madonna is a better guitar player than Stevie Ray Vaughn, which she most certainly is.

I have to agree with Waltzing.

Just look at the album Metallica released after Jason left the band... St. Anger. An unequivocal failure. It just proves that he was the greatest bass player no one ever heard of.

Wait, I think I get it now.

Well, to be fair, I can't believe anyone would believe the first thing I posted in the first place, enough to say I failed. I had no choice but to run with it ... so it's not really a hobby, but it was a nice break from work.

Like I stated at an earlier bass thread--you bassists MUST check out the new re-issued ACOUSTIC bass amps. (for you youngsters--NOT as in "acoustic" guitar--ACOUSTIC CONTROL CORP made legendary vintage bass amp thunder in the 70s)

I read once that Jaco cited his acquisition of an ACOUSTIC 360 as one of the most profound moments in his development as a bass player.

As much as I adore AMPEG I must say the ACOUSTIC and the SUNNO)))
were the true kings of the classic bass monsters. (honorable mention goes to TRAYNOR)
The AMPEG SVT was not actually designed as a bass amp in the first place. Even the superb "Porta-Flex" amps as used by James Jamerson were intended as "general purpose" instrument amps.

ACOUSTIC invented the bass amp as it is known today.
Steve Rabe of SWR was once an ACOUSTIC CONTROL designer.

....anyway,the new ACOUSTIC bass amps are at Guitar Center and they are way reasonably priced and sound awesome as well as being loud as god-awful hell like the originals.

craigdamage 2008-06-13 06:37:01 PM
....and another thing.

Myself like all other dumb bass players,I got really into Weather Report because of Jaco but it was Zawinul and Shorter who were the giants of that great band.

"Speak No Evil" by Wayne Shorter was a true Jazz masterpiece back in the day.(1964) Elvin Jones,Ron Carter,Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard all kick major ass on that one.

Great bassist, but I don't like listening to his music. It's kinda like listening to someone shred on a guitar. I just don't enjoy it.

A few years back, Downbeat Mag. selected them the top jazz band of the last 30 year, btw.

I agree whole heartedly ... however, if you want to get into any conversation on the music tab you have to talk about Rush, SRV, or bashing Metallica.

Yes, SRV, even Jimi, astoundingly overrated.

Weather Report is a fantastically accurate name, given that they sound exactly like music you'd expect to hear in the background of the forecast.

Tal Wilkenfeld is definitely a star on the rise. Jeff Beck could have chosen any bass player in the world to play with him and Vinnie Colaiuta. He chose this 21 year old girl. Watch this clip to see why. She holds her own with these giants. If I could've played that well at 21 years old (or even now!!!) I'd be rich. Inspiring stuff!!!

I'm a little late to this party, but subby gets a FAIL, Jaco was just fast.

Col. Claypool FTW
