He plays for "Bela Fleck and the Flecktones". You should check out his own band, "Soul Circus". I saw them in Seattle a few years ago. It was amazing! Four bass players, one rhythm guitarist and two drummers, along with the usual singers. Awesome show!

Vic is a monster. It is hard to have a best of _____ contest, because there are to many musical styles. So if we are going to make it a contest we need well outlined rules.

Vic got his start at Busch Gardens - Williamsburg playing the country music show in the French-Canadian area (early 90's?). I've seen the video of the talent show all the musicians put on for the workers. Even then, he had the mighty skillz.

Uhm yeah, the the reason he's doing the tremelo work is because it's a SOLO. If you want regular ole' back end bass, Wooten can play as seemless and funky as you like.

I saw Wooten with Bela Fleck a couple years back and it was the single coolest bit of musicianship I've seen live.

Victor Wooten pisses me off, because he's so good at actually playing the bass yet his songwriting is so shiatty all of the internet crawlers that look on youtube are amazed but don't see the whole picture as a musician.

So when one of my friends, who listens to nothing but techno and has never picked up and instrument tells me that Wooten is a better musician than Les Claypool, I want to slap him in the face.

All of music is subjective.

Except for one thing...Jaco Pastorius is the greatest bassist who ever lived.

I'm not saying he's the greatest that ever lived, but you should take a gander at Doug Wimbish of Living Colour.

Not to hate on or disrespect the other fine bass players in the world, but THIS.

"Teen Town" is a thing of great joy and beauty.

I've seen him twice and he's astounding. But he lectured the audience to stop passing joints around during the show, which I thought was odd.

They ought to call it "Victor Wooten and some other guys" instead of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

I once went to a demo of Victor's when he was playing at the local theater in College. He proceeded to show us how he does the double hammer thumb pluck technique. I proceeded to be so amazed with it that on the way home i drove through a red light on the busiest road in town. I actually had to accelerate through the intersection to keep us, all 4 of us, from being killed.

A while later the car was silent, i turned to my passengers and said "i bet you are all thinking about how i almost killed you all, huh? Man that was an awesome demo"

/he's just that good.

I've bee playing bas for a solid 15 years now and no one beats wooten in my book. In terms of technixcal profiicency , style, and inventivnes he is unmatched.

Bela Flek & the Flektones (band he plays in) plays with DMB on a semi-regular basis. Ants Marching from '97 (new window). Just Bela Flek I think tho.

ive tried listening to wooten several times over the last 7 years.

everything ive ever heard is utterly forgettable. the man can't write a song for shiat.

From Wiki about Mr. Wooten: Modern improvements in electric bass guitar construction, such as a lowered string " action" and additional strings, have brought the bass closer to the electric guitar, allowing new playing techniques that were essentially impossible on a bass in the 1970s.

Don't get me wrong, I think he is a remarkable musician. And that is a very impressive video.
