A bullet to the head is just as efficient and will possibly pass this judge's muster based on the Che' photo behind him. How do we get kooks like this as judges? The U.S. Supreme Court already ruled on this some months ago. Cocktail or straight, put this guy away.

It's like he's just daring a RW blogger to go nuts all over him, and by extension, of course, Obama.

What is it about Che that makes so many Americans idolize him? Is it just the romance of the revolutionary? I saw 'motorcycle diaries' and it was an interesting movie and all, but I didn't feel compelled to put a poster of the man on my wall or anything.

Exactly. Love him or hate him, that picture makes him look cool.

On the topic of painless execution, I never understood why the didn't just put them in a closed garage with a car running. I always heard that you just go to sleep then die. You could even allow the inmate to choose his last tunes much like they get to choose their last meal.

The honest, embarrassing answer? People really have no idea who he is or what he did. They don't even know where he was from. The iconic t-shirt/poster image became popular among college socialist groups and by extension those who latched onto that culture not because of its politics, but rather because of its image. The fundamental truth is this: Americans tend to confuse Che Guevara with César Chávez.

I did too, when I was a kid.

So here's the big difference for all you younger, left leaning kids out there who want to be in the know:

César Chávez = Union organizer, hero, man-of-the-people, died an American
Che Guevara = murdering f*ckhead who could give a sh*t about the people

Look man, I'm as left as they come. If I were any more bleeding heart I'd be a vegan, solar-powered organic book-store cooperative owner who advocates for the marriage of gay abortions.

But Che Guevara did some outright nasty, hypocritical sh*t in the bulk of his lifetime. He not only argued for the importation of soviet missiles to Cuba during that whole little 'crisis' thing we had going, but he really, REALLY wanted Castro to use them and destroy the whole f*cking hemisphere. That's just a taste. There are many excellent biographies that, while even trying to idolize the man, list his crimes in a handy, powerpoint ready bullet-point index of why a person should burn in hell.

on the actual history and actions of the bastard, not the glowing revisions of left historians. here's a link to a Slate review of that film distortion of him:

"Che was a totalitarian. He achieved nothing but disaster. Many of the early leaders of the Cuban Revolution favored a democratic or democratic-socialist direction for the new Cuba. But Che was a mainstay of the hardline pro-Soviet faction, and his faction won. Che presided over the Cuban Revolution's first firing squads. He founded Cuba's "labor camp" system"

Slate (new window)

he was a cold-blooded killer who despised democracy and individual freedom

All I know is I continually hear assertions from people about how many people he killed, but I never really have seen anyone actually support that assertion.

La Cabana prison was one of his low points. Oversaw the execution of many members of the Batista regime and others who were resistant to the Cuban Revolution.

Shame he was so taken with Marx. The man was brilliance personified. If he were more Gandhi than Marx, I firmly believe he'd be viewed today with the same reverence we give MLK.

Skleenar 2008-06-13 01:54:22 PM

OK, here's one person's view of Che, that seems to be based on something Che was involved with (from a link on Che's wiki page)

I found out, through our friend Raúl Artiles, that you'll be performing in Miami soon; I find this rather ill-advised, since not too long ago you committed the faux-pas of appearing at the "Oscar Awards" ceremony brandishing, with pride, an enormous crucifix over a tee-shirt with that archaic and stereotyped image of "The Butcher of the Cabaña," the moniker given to the lamentable character known as Ché Guevara by those Cubans who had to suffer his tortures and humiliations in that nefarious prison.

Funny that the many of the same people who can create a disconnect between GWB and responsibility for Abu Ghraib would be so vocal a critic of Che for his association with Cabaña.

In any case, it seems funny that a judge who is against capital punishment would idolize Che, since it does seem he was certainly not a critic of that form of punishment.

One of these Cubans was my cousin Bebo, imprisoned there just for being a Christian. He recounts to me on occasion, always with infinite bitterness, how he could hear, from his cell, in the early hours of dawn, the executions without prior trials or process of law, of the many who died shouting, "Long Live Christ The King!"

In January 1957, as his diary from the Sierra Maestra indicates, Guevara shot Eutimio Guerra because he suspected him of passing on information: "I ended the problem with a .32 caliber pistol, in the right side of his brain.... His belongings were now mine." Later he shot Aristidio, a peasant who expressed the desire to leave whenever the rebels moved on. While he wondered whether this particular victim "was really guilty enough to deserve death," he had no qualms about ordering the death of Echevarría, a brother of one of his comrades, because of unspecified crimes: "He had to pay the price." At other times he would simulate executions without carrying them out, as a method of psychological torture.

Luis Guardia and Pedro Corzo, two researchers in Florida who are working on a documentary about Guevara, have obtained the testimony of Jaime Costa Vázquez, a former commander in the revolutionary army known as "El Catalán," who maintains that many of the executions attributed to Ramiro Valdés, a future interior minister of Cuba, were Guevara's direct responsibility, because Valdés was under his orders in the mountains. "If in doubt, kill him" were Che's instructions. On the eve of victory, according to Costa, Che ordered the execution of a couple dozen people in Santa Clara, in central Cuba, where his column had gone as part of a final assault on the island. Some of them were shot in a hotel, as Marcelo Fernándes-Zayas, another former revolutionary who later became a journalist, has written-adding that among those executed, known as casquitos, were peasants who had joined the army simply to escape unemployment.

That judge is really beginning to look like a tool.

Never was interested enough in Che to do the research. I guess I now trust my instincts better.
