Fun! I <3 the PiP of the kick-drum work... it actually made me think about how I position my foot on the pedal.

Also; it's VERY COOL that they did Naked in the Rain: EASY song to play on bass but still funky as all get-out, so the amateur can play at home. Also, it's a good lesson in restraint. a super-slap-solo is great and all, but when it comes to holding down a song the bass has a more laid back role to play.

oh! And the "break down" at ~7:30 is niceness; "Here's how you lock the drum and bass together!"
/did someone just say D&B?! Booyakka, My Selecta!~

I like Flea, but technically it's my belief that Vic Wooten (^) is better technically.

kanesays 2008-06-13 10:27:00 AM
Victor Wooten is superb.

And then along comes Jaco and ends the argument.

jaco smocko and the same for flea. Meh, technically they're great, but the music is boring to me.

I like Rex (pantera) He knows how to use a bass.

I know there is a lot of RHCP hate on Fark, but when Flea is doing his thing on more of the funkbased RHCP stuff he is amazing. Sure there are probably better, but no matter how much you hate the band or the direction they took you can't deny that he is an incredible musician.

Flea was already a technically amazing bassist before RHCP's fame really take off (before Blood Sugar Sex Magic was released - see DVD "Funky Monks") - even back then he talked about how he at one time tried just to be the best technical bassist, but had since learned to focus more on musicality. I find that's why I like his work better than a lot of the others who (to me) more or less come across as wanking.. whereas flea makes me want to do hip-thrusts.

Glad I could help you out. Sometimes it takes a while to learn that there's more to music than how fast you can play notes. Lets see.

Jaco has released 27 albums.

All of their sales together do not equal Vulgar Display of Power or likely even Cowboys From Hell

Jaco= Great musician
Rex= Successful musician.

If I had my choice, I'd take successful every farking time. You can go on being great in your basement tho, I wont stop you.

While we differ in taste (I like Flea and RHCP better than Pantera) ... I totally agree with this sentiment. Yes, album sales != "technically" better ... but adding soul or passion and an ability to reach a wider audience, well that's usually more fun.

/no doubt some people will miss your point and come along snarking about how Britney sells a lot of albums so you must like her too

wow, the retardedness of this is hard to tell if youre messing around or not. btw, i love pantera but rex is about as distinctive on bass as jason newsted on 'and justice for all'. keep stifling evolution though, i wont stop you!

This is the greatest bass solo ever recorded.

RHCP sold their souls with BSSM. They are beyond redemption.

Valdes 2008-06-13 12:38:16 PM
And Les Claypool is still the greatest bass player in the world. Sorry kids.

Derwood: Bass Solos are the SPAM of music

No, those are drum solos.

This is great and all, but why are videos like these called "lessons?" There have been very, VERY few of these so-called "instructional" videos from famous musicians that have actually been instructional. My favorite, of course, is the Yngwie Malmsteen "look what I can do" series of videos, where he plays something superduper fast, maybe twice, and then tacks on a trite "...and that's how you do it" at the end.

I'm going to release a set of instructional videos, too.

Lesson #1: "Check This Out."
Lesson #2: "Come Hear How Good I Play."
Lesson #3: "Did You Hear That Last Lesson? Was That NOT Made of Awesome?"
Lesson #4: "Just Follow My Fingers--Haha, Lost You!"

Valdes 2008-06-13 12:41:06 PM
Even new school Claypool is better than Flea.

Valdes 2008-06-13 12:42:07 PM
Actually, this is a better Claypool solo: Link

Madbassist1, I love Pantera, but Rex? Are you farking kidding? Besides, picking is for noses, not basses.

Someone send this link to RHCP and tell them to go back to this type of sh*t. Good stuff.

Ah, a sample of every TV interview Flea has ever done.

You can think a particular bass player is better than Flea and still acknowledge that that's a pretty cool ass jam.

mekkab [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-06-13 01:05:18 PM
awfulperson: but why are videos like these called "lessons?"

Because they slowed it down, explained about matching the kick drum to the bass "pops", showed footage of the technique, and the song they played wasn't super-challenging.

Pretty much everything I pointed out in my initial comments!

I'm not insulting your intelligence so I find it distressing that you insult mine. Oh well...

Listen you mental midget you keep using words like "distinctive" and "evolution". Let me explain something to you. The bass' purpose is to hold down the BOTTOM. It is not a way for a supporting player to become the damn "star" of the farking show. That's not it's purpose and it shouldnt be used for that. It is to give the music power, not distract from the melodic instruments with needless noodling, you farktard.

While I have a hard time deciding between the obvious talents of the folks mentioned recently....Ox and Lee got me into playing bass...Jameson and Johnny B Gayden taught me smooth...newcomers like Flea and Les keep the instrument alive...I find it odd all we mention are electric bassists.

Keeping it real with the double bass I offer Patrick O'Hearn

moichido 2008-06-13 11:42:28 PM
And bass player X is better than bass player Y blah blah blah blah... (insert more useless comments here)

As a drummer I would be sporting wood grooving along with Flea. That vid was pretty sick.

I know I joined the party late, but I only just noticed this was up, so in short, old chilis were better, Jaco and Wooten are better.
