If anyone here thinks a write-in vote is a waste, think of it this way: checking off a box for someone you don't want to vote for is a much larger waste.

On the plus side, neither one of the check-box choices is an incumbent, so they have that going for them.

He lost because Ron Paul supporters didn't submit enough Ron Paul-related links to Fark, they didn't say "Ron Paul!!" enough in threads, and they didn't spend enough time chasing people on national TV.

For shame, Ron Paul supporters. You cost a good candidate his shot at the presidency through your lack of dedication.

He has been elected to Congress 10 times so he must being doing SOMETHING right. You don't get there by shiatting on yourself. He is not some wacko, just like Mr. Obama is not the savior of this county. He has different ideas on how some things should be run. He has SOME crazy ideas like everyone in the world does, like his view on some of the politics of the Civil war and Mr. Lincoln. You may not LIKE where he stands on some issues, but you at least know WHERE he stands.

He is far more qualified to lead than Mr Obama IMHO.

The logic you're pulling out for this one would require you to write in Robert Byrd before voting for Ron Paul.

There is no prize involved in guessing the winner correctly, and statistically speaking it's more "viable" to buy lighting insurance and go out for eighteen holes of golf than it is to think that your vote will decide the Presidential election -- individual votes are underneath the level of noise caused by spoiled votes and quirky equipment, and we can't even give an exact count for Florida eight years after the fact. Why on earth would you bother voting for anyone other than the person on the ballot you most prefer, especially in a state where the election is not in doubt?

Besides, elections are recurring events. If the outcome is 49-48-3, it's more likely that the two major parties will attempt to appeal to the 3% in the next election than if the contest is 51-49.

/Well, okay *certain* people will whine about the election for the next decade rather than actually working to fix the spoiler problem, but we call such people "morons."

I for one am glad Dr. Paul has been in the race. Rarely do antiwar arguments from the right get the play they deserve in the American field of political discourse. The other GOP candidates actually had to stand there and defend themselves against an articulate conservative that disagreed with them on matters of substance. Bravo, Dr. Paul. And thank you.

Ted Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1962, versus Paul's being elected in 1976. Ted Kennedy has to be doing something MORE right, then.

The real question is why you should bother voting for the person you want, since voting for anyone isn't going to make a difference anyway. Your reasoning leads to the conclusion that voting is purely symbolic. I agree, but I don't think the symbolic value is enough to justify doing it.

Because much like diverting an asteroid, even a tiny push can have some effect if started early enough and continued over long enough time.

Of course, that probably won't be anywhere close to repaying the time spent, but then again I post on Fark. :)

/and if one of these days we get a rational voting system, my quirky vote might be worth a bit more.

What is Barr's current National Polling Percent? If he continues to get ZERO coverage, will that percentage go up or down?

Aww, I'm going to miss the radio commercials.

One major local station ran ads where Ron Paul supporters preached crazier-than-tinfoil-hat conspiracy theories. And of course, Ron Paul will fix everything.

I can only hope that 2012 spits out a candidate that brings such voters to the airwaves again.

Because much like diverting an asteroid, even a tiny push can have some effect if started early enough and continued over long enough time.

But this actually sounds like an argument against voting for the person you actually like (e.g. Paul or Nader) and to instead vote for someone with a more realistic chance (e.g. McCain or Obama).

Or maybe I'm misinterpreting the analogy between voting and pushing an asteroid.
