The Democrat ticket would have to win for that to happen. That is no longer a possibility.

TheCid 2008-06-12 06:31:30 PM
Interesting; but are they really willing to risk losing a Senate seat? I don't know how Missouri replaces senators... the governor is a Republican.

That should get the broads to vote for him as well.

GAT_00 [TotalFark] 2008-06-12 06:37:04 PM
Didn't Hillary demand that Obama not pick a woman, so she can be the first one across that barrier? Would she openly take up opposition to Obama again if he picked another woman?

Suicidal Writer: That is no longer a possibility.

Also, don't they normally choose the VP to help carry states the main candidate couldn't carry on their own? Pretty sure Missouri isn't a must have state that Obama is likely to lose.

ShawnDoc: Also, don't they normally choose the VP to help carry states the main candidate couldn't carry on their own? Pretty sure Missouri isn't a must have state that Obama is likely to lose.

Missouri is a swing state with 11 electoral votes- the only swing states with more are Virginia (13) and Ohio (20). (Well, Georgia might end up in play since it's Bob Barr's home state; but at the moment it's likely Republican and MO/VA/OH are better swing states to go after.)

It's worth noting that if Obama wins all the Kerry states plus Iowa- which seems likely at this point; Missouri will put him over the top.

My prediction- including swing states- is in my profile; if you're interested. You may also wish to check intrade's state-by-state predictions, summarized in this map:

McCaskill wasn't able to vote for or against the war.

She seems like a solid pick from a swing state that could put Obama over the top, the big Fox News/Rush Limbaugh rumor mill will be insinuating she had something to do with the murder of her first husband.

Jim Webb. You get Virginia, a war hero, and someone who can articulate a new foreign policy in short, simple sentences.

As a Missouri resident, I will certainly admit we have our share of Fundies. However (!), we have voted for stem cell research, McCaskill AND Obama. Progress...I hope? ;)

So how's she stack up vs. Sebelius?

/Still rooting for Webb

Clonod 2008-06-12 07:40:18 PM
It's not going to be McCaskill.

First of all, she won't help carry Missouri. She barely won this state. She has a 51% coalition behind her.

Her husband has been embroiled in some nursing home nonsense that I don't know much about, but is sketchy in the rough details.

She's inexperienced, and doesn't add anything to the ticket other than a vagina.

He can do better.

saintstryfe 2008-06-12 07:40:52 PM
Sounds like a good choice, but losing the Senate, even for a few months, might be bad.

You're acussing those opposed to Obama of being delusionally naive?
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

If you really think for a second that all, or even most of the happy horseshiat Obama's selling will ever become a reality, or, conversely, that it won't wreck the economy and or our national security, I've got oceanfront property in Utah to sell you.

Shoring up the defense vote with someone strongly experienced in foreign policy and the military may be in Obama's better interest than in shoring up the domestic vote.

BMulligan 2008-06-12 07:44:49 PM
I like her, but I don't see Obama picking a Senator - and especially not a Senator whose seat is likely to go Republican. I'm guessing he'll pick a governor, a retired military officer, or a businessperson, in that order of likelihood, to bring executive experience to the ticket.

Yeah, he did.

hello to your new vice president

From Crooks and liars

Obama leads by seven among white women (46-39), a key swing demographic. What's more, Americans say they prefer change to experience by a wide margin, and as one of the pollsters behind the survey noted, people just don't see McCain as an agent of change: "Voters are not convinced that McCain represents the change they want and that he'll be all that different from Bush."

For that matter, Americans actually seem to expect an Obama presidency. Putting aside preferences, poll respondents were asked which candidate they thought would win. It wasn't even close - 54% predict an Obama win, while only 30% said the same of McCain.

So, if all of these factors are leaning in Obama's favor, why is he only up by six? Because McCain is doing extremely well with white men, leading Obama by 20 points (55-35). White men make up 40% of the electorate, so this makes a big difference. And while Obama leads among women of all ethnic and racial backgrounds, McCain enjoys an edge among white suburban women (44-38).

haemaker [TotalFark] 2008-06-12 07:51:13 PM
Andrew S. Tanenbaum agrees.

"Claire McCaskill (D-MO) has only been in the Senate 2 years but has a long history in state politics. At 54 she brings experience to the ticket. Her biggest assest is being from the mother of all swing states, Missouri, with its 11 electoral votes. Furthermore, Missouri's northern neighbor, Iowa has 7 electoral votes and went for Bush in 2004. If she could bring in those 18 electoral votes, when added to the 252 Kerry got, we have 270 and she becomes Vice President of the United States. This calculation has surely not escaped [top Obama advisor David] Axelrod's attention. She's also a Catholic, which helps with a demographic where Obama has had problems. Definitely a sleeper."

TheCid: I don't know how Missouri replaces senators... the governor is a Republican.

Jay Nixon will appoint the next Senator if McCaskill becomes VP.

Sorry Sarah and Kenny, but you're not going to be Governor.

But anyways, It would astound me if Claire McCaskill got picked to be VP. She's very authentic and all, but picking someone who was a State Auditor until 2007 to be Vice President is a bit unthinkable right now.

Missouri is fresh off having the "McCaskill's husband has crooked homes" campaigns of 2004 and 2006. Can America really want that in 2008?

I saw this on Hardball yesterday. When the 50% that support him and think he's pro-choice find out the truth, that woman vote will evaporate like the sweat off a terrorists balls in a car-bombing.

CNN headline :

IS McCaskill interested in the VP spot?

answer from McCaskill's own mouth: (new window)

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.)
"If I were asked, I would ask some mental health professionals to visit Barack Obama. I just think Sen. Obama is way too smart to pick me. I'm not a good pick, and he's smarter than that. That's why he's going to make such a good president."

Not a problem, according to the polls Dems are projected to have 58-62 seats this November, we can afford to lose one to the President of the Senate.

My vote is also for Clark, but I don't have a vote.
