That makes perfect sense, cut taxes and reduce spending. It's not like we've got a war on or anything.

Oh.

I see in a rush to put up funny McCain ha-has that nobody apparently RTFA. It's not exactly charitable to Barack of Nazareth, either. But, hey, the headline gimmick was funny.

SangamonTaylor 2008-06-12 04:29:02 PM
So let me get this straight...McCain recognizes that the economy has weakened, and so he has changed his old position advocating increased defense spending to allow a tax cut to spur business growth. What's the problem? Economic conditions change, and I'd sure hope that our next leader has the ability to look at the present circumstances and make decisions based upon the facts at hand.

It's not like McCain "voted for the war, before he voted against it" or has changed his position on abortion. When he sees that something works, he's willing to change his position. Same thing with him initially voting against the Bush tax cuts. He saw that they were working, so he voted to extend them. ZOMG!

well the headline had nothing to do with obama, and you are so far the only person in the thread to mention him (besides me in this post, responding to yours).

I'm going with they're both true. More wars mean more military money, but at the same time spending cuts in reducing benefits to military personal. Because that's McBush's idea of conservative spending.

FTFA....

McCain's top economic adviser, Doug Holtz-Eakin, blithely supposes that cuts in defense spending could make up for reducing the corporate tax rate from 35% to 25% and the subsequent shrinkage in federal revenues.

So reading comprehension lesson of the day....

Doug Hotlz-Eakin != McCain.

Blithely Supposes != supports

C'mon smitty, you can do better. Just put pancakes in an article and you can get a greenlight. Damn.

Yay for small excerpt summaries of bills. Don't know about the others, but as for the last one on your little chart McCain has repeatedly explained that he was supporting his competing bill which included more benefits based on how long of service you paid to the military.

Uh...

What were the first four words in your quote there?

So you're saying he's not going to listen to his top economic adviser on the economy, when McCain has admitted that he knows very little about the economy himself?

THAT'S not very reassuring.

Did you not see the second point? No where in the article does it state "support for cutting the defense budget". It clearly states in so little words... "I guess one COULD cut the budget to offset tax breaks". This is not the same as "McCain SUPPORTS cuts to the defense budget."

So yes, my first point holds true as the economic adviser was speculating at best, not reciting McCain's stance on the issue.

Also.... Candidates have advisers to give them an opinion. I would much prefer a president who surrounds himself with people of differing opinions than simple "Yes" men. So no I would not expect McCain to be in lock step with his adviser.

So what's not reassuring about what now?

What is sad is that the article is a fair depiction of the dilemma that faces US in the fall. The headline is only inviting to those who want to slam Mcain. What is lost is the big picture of how candidates are in a position to have to say only what people want to hear without offending anyone and without having any substance behind it. Either way you look at it, the people are losers in the fall. Whichever candidate wins, almost half of the country is going to feel marginalized.
