(Wired) Interesting Pearl Jam gets it: Instead of pointlessly suing and running after bootleggers, they openly embraced it. And now they are moving on to a popular mobile platform to make it happen. So alive, indeed   (blog.wired.com) divider line 42

Pearl Jam has always treated their fans quite well.

The Ten Club is incredible (annual Christmas single and priority seating at concerts).

Even back during their 1998 Yield tour, the band allowed us to bring in our own digital audio recorders. I remember the fun of tape trading back in the days. Now we can buy an mp3 (or high quality version if preferred) within a days of any show we attend. Remarkable. I have absolutely no problem paying this band my hard earned money....well worth the costs!

Does this mean they will finally stop apologetically namechecking underground bands in an attempt to not seem like a bloated arena act?

KhamanV 2008-06-12 03:25:35 PM
It's smart of them. I absolutely detest their music (personal choice, it's just not my thing, but I don't sit around and bag on it), but I support their attitude about the industry.

I've always liked Pearl Jam.

Metallica, they had their day in the sun and they blew it.

When they let people daisy chain off the soundboard, I'll be impressed.

Or even setup a taper section in the crowd.

No shiat. If only some band would have thought of...

The songs that we hear are just songs of our own.

As for the mobile option, bootlegs of three live tracks per show will be released following each show on Verizon's V CAST phones and through a Jam-branded Verizon site.

I thought you said 'popular'?

jonasborg [TotalFark] 2008-06-12 03:33:41 PM
there are tons of bands who do this, and have for a while. Not very often does a band allow you to daisy chain off the soundboard, however.

Archive.org has tons of stuff. And actually it's FREE.

I'm not a huge fan of having to purchase the set, so archive.org is great to me. This store reminds me of livephish.com.

They realized that the only way they are going to stay relevant as a rock act is to keep a cult following of the same fans. I sorta include myself in this, but their recent politicization has really turned me off (politics in music: a little bit, and subtly goes a long way).

However, they are doing it right. They're not going to gain a lot of new, young fans like they did in the 1990s, but their old fans will follow them around to multiple shows, buy massive bootlegs, bootleg and trade themselves, and become a community.

It all means sales of *something* in the end. T-shirts, books, whatever.

Smart guys.

Actually, even Ratdog and The Other Ones don't allow daisy chaining any more. (At least the last couple shows I went to they didn't.) But the taper sections are always hopping.

As a teenager, said name-checking saved me from the sad vortex of never-ending suck that was to become mainstream radio... so I'm gonna say, hopefully not. For the children.

I think this could be a great way for bands to bring in additional revenue. It's incredibly tough for a small band to break even on a tour... so maybe to bring in a little extra cash, you say to the crowd, "If you'd like a bootleg of tonight's show, go give $5 to our merch booth and we'll send you a link to download it." If all it takes is plugging a handheld in to the mixer, and then uploading the files to a server...

Think of some of the best shows you've been to... and how much you'd give to have a recording of the actual event.

On top of everything else, you've got to think the current gas crunch must be hell on lower-tier bands trying to tour.

Yup. On tour this summer. My daughter (9) liked the Vedder "Into the Wild" ST and wanted more. So I bought her Rearview Mirror...she loves the stuff. One of the few bands that I don't have to censor now.

They're keeping that vibe from being completely dead, and I for one am grateful.

This reminds me, I need to join the Ten Club before they release a new album and do another world tour. They are a good live act, but it probably helps to sit closer than the rafters in the some crappy venue that doubles as a basketball court and hockey rink.

And this is why I've been saying that Pearl Jam is the greatest live band in the world.

They give first dibs on tickets to their fans not some record company douchebag, so real fans get front row seats. They've always tried to make their ticket prices reasonable. They've been playing together for 18 years, their one of the tightest bands around. And they usually play 2 1/2 hour shows, sometimes even longer.

And they allow taping and have been offering high quality downloads of each of their concerts for years.

Pearl Jam kicks ass. I hope they swing by the west coast later this summer.

Bootleg recording: an otherwise unavailable audio or video recording distributed without the artist's consent

Exactly why are these called bootlegs? Especially the recordings they release??

Combustible Elvis 2008-06-13 04:19:17 AM
I am taking the CD option - its nice to have the physical media (I am still one of those people who love vinyl - which for you youngsters is a music format that came before CDs).

PJ have always been really cool about open taping (apart from Eddie's solo gigs), but its still nice to get some quality control at a reasonable price.

Its just a shame that I live in the UK and can't get over to the States for the current tour.

/still building up the 2000 and 2003 bootlegs

JamMasterJamie 2008-06-13 11:59:30 AM
One of the best live-bands of our time and always good to their fans, PJ making a move like this doesn't surprise me and they're going to reap the rewards. I personally own about fifty bootlegged PJ shows dating all the way back to 93, but the ease of getting them and the quality of sound since 2001 when they started releasing them officially is incomparable. Viva Pearl Jam!

Open Taping Policy FTW!

"The Smashing Pumpkins live recordings can be uploaded to archive.org. The band is allowing archive.org to create mp3's / streaming derivatives from taper's lossless (.flac or .shn) seed files.

Live recordings only please. No Inner Ear Monitor (IEM) / Assisted Listening Device (ALD) sources. Shows recorded off of FM radio broadcasts / TV broadcasts are okay. no unauthorized SBD recordings. If you have a SBD recording you would like to upload, contact Frank at frank AT frankquinto DOT com first to get approval to upload it to archive.org. No profiting on any recordings. We reserve the right to take down any recording that does not fit this policy.

All Smashing Pumpkins live recordings are allowed to be uploaded to archive.org regardless of when the date of performance is (i.e. ALL shows are OK, not just the new 2007 performances.)

-Frank"

Well, actually, Pearl Jam has had an open bootleg policy for their entire history, so they figured it out only twenty years after the Grateful Dead. That better?
