Sure Radiohead didn't have any big explosions when I saw them, but their video screens and lighting were phenomenal, and I would hardly call it boring, let alone try to make like it wasn't a "visual experience." Maybe Gene Simmons has Radiohead confused with Bright Eyes?

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2008-06-12 01:14:07 PM
this is why I have mixed feeling about Gene Simmons. He is arrogant but at least he is aware he is. therefore making him somewhat entertaining. Much like someone crapping his leotard in public

Rev.K [TotalFark] 2008-06-12 01:14:14 PM
Yes, because if you're a fan of Radiohead, you're obviously at the show for the platform shoes, black and white makeup, and over the top rock star pyrotechnics.

radiohead also has a thing called "well written songs" that KISS can't exactly compete with.

"why yes, i WOULD like to rock and roll all night, and party everyday"

gilgigamesh 2008-06-12 01:30:57 PM
Anyone who says Radiohead is boring live has never seen radiohead live.

They don't jump around and blow shiat up, because that isn't who they are. But everytime I have seen them they absolutely give 110%.

SockMonkeyHolocaust 2008-06-12 01:34:13 PM
I agree with him. It's like all the fun went out of rock and roll and people are treating bands like Radiohead with a gravity suitable for artists instead of entertainers writing pop songs. Even Gwar thinks they are a serious metal band now.

I like Gene when he's performing in KISS. Otherwise, he needs to STFU. He said the same things about Nirvana and grunge and anything else that isn't brain dead cockrock.

He's proud of his success and money, but slamming other artists just makes you look bad.

Yes, and the stuff was true then, as well. If you wanna write songs with messages, fine, but don't stand there staring at your shoes while you perform them.

barneyfifesbullet 2008-06-12 02:16:51 PM
After Radiohead last 35 years and has hundreds of millions of dollars in ticket sales, you can mention them in the same paragraph as KISS.

Yeah, musically they don't compare. But, Gene is talking about putting on a spectacle. Not shoegazing.

KISS was never about music. They were always about the Big Live Show.

Except it wasn't true then either. I saw Nirvana on the "Nevermind" tour and they did not stand around shoegazing at all. Ditto for Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, and every other supposedly dull live grunge band I saw around then.

I'm guessing Gene hasn't seen any of these bands.

I'm partial to "I'm in Need of Love." Best KISS or KISS-related song ever, well, for me anyway.

I was. Radiohead has good songs and a good live show. They're not unusual in that regard.

OK...

Emo rock is analogous to "shoe gazer" rock but I have been to a few Radiohead concerts and they are not "shoe gazing" I assure you. Very exciting concerts.

I like Kiss too but Simmons is wrong and lashing out here.

I would tend to disagree. When I think of shoegazer rock, I think My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Lush, Slowdive, etc.

I'm willing to bet I have a higher IQ than most who will post here, yet I like Radiohead.

Of course, it is not your average Radiohead, but one I made up myself.

Anybody who has seen Radiohead perform National Anthem live knows that they don't stare at their shoes and mumble.

Saw them a month ago and they played for 2 hours, with multiple encores. 24 songs total, and one of the best shows I've ever been to.

Yeah, emo is more "drip mascara-filled tears on my Deviants" rock.

Emo rock? Shoegazing?

I first saw Radiohead in 1994, and I had never heard the word "emo" then. And they were definitely not shoegazers.

And they do put on a great show, but that is mainly because the songs are good, which is why kiss need spandex and makeup.

If you want to talk shoegazers I give you Ride, Slowdive, Galaxie 500.... but not Radiohead.

Different class.

Exactly. Emo is much whinier than shoegaze. It's basically goth with all the sense of danger sucked away, leaving nothing but self pity and a black wardrobe.

Gene, you're comparing apples to oranges. Kiss is a shtick that's all flash and no substance. You have to provide big explosions and create an obnoxious spectacle because if you didn't the audience would immediately realize that your music is mindlessly repetetive unoriginal trite. You sir, are a performer not an artist. Radiohead concerts are an exercise of talent that entertain by creating as opposed to reciting. Gene, you're not an artist, you're a performer - just like Britney Spears.

MikoSquiz 2008-06-12 05:42:42 PM
It's like Michael Bay complaining that The Shawshank Redemption didn't have enough tits and explosions in it.

Valdes 2008-06-12 05:45:20 PM
Why are we still talking about Radiohead when we should be talking about why Super Furry Animals doesn't have enough albums?

QFT

I saw Radiohead a few weeks ago, there were light/LCD bars going from the stage to the ceiling with more giant LCD panels behind them. All the crazy colors and designs works in unison, every panel and bar was like a giant cut-up TV. It was a crazy amazing show..

Fark KISS, they never had any real substance.

oh that stupid fark who sings in that shiatty band with that shiatty makeup? THAT gene?

please DIAF, thanks. you won't be missed.

KISS has sucked for decades now, but Gene has a point, Radiohead live blows ass. I was bored to tears at Bonnaroo 2006. For my money: Tool, NIN, and STP are the best live shows out there. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is a good night of rock and roll too.
