FTA Part the first:

Just 10 years ago, after the disastrous 1999 Woodstock and the temporary petering out of Lollapalooza, festivals appeared dead.

Strangely enough, Woodstock '99 was a mere NINE years ago.

Later on...

It's hardly the only gig this summer. The season kicked off with the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California., a nine-year old summer behemoth that in many ways originated the festival revival.

Coachella's first festival was less than three months after Woodstock '99.

I guess August & September of '99 were really rough on musical festivals.

whoa, where exactly is the drunken orgy tent?

Blaud: whoa, where exactly is the drunken orgy tent?

There was one I witnessed (but did not partake) at T in the Park 1998 in Scotland. A lot of firsts for me that weekend. My first spewing in public, and my first time I was too wasted to go see a particular show (Ash). It was also the first time I actually witnessed steam rising from the mosh pit because it was so cold on the Sunday. That was during the Beastie Boys.

My god, what a fantastic time. Screwdrivers and Corn Flakes for breakfast. Brilliant.

Live rock music and daylight just don't mix for me, thanks. And several hours of live music in a row is pretty hard to fully appreciate too.

Bonnaroo would be a lot cooler without Kanye West or Metallica. Still gonna be great, Plant and Krauss are there among a lot of other great bands.

/not going.

wow this article is written by some sort of idiot. It makes almost no sense.

On a related note, why is bonnarroo management farking up their festival? It got big by being relatively jam/hippy oriented. And now they're bringing in music like woodstock '99... which will bring in THAT crowd... which will mean like 100 rapes in a weekend. fark it, I'm going to Rothbury.

I hate hippies, but I love their music and their drugs. And they're pussies who won't start shiat, which makes them much more tolerable in big crowds.

CNN could've sent an e-mail or something over to the editors at SPIN and asked them about their entire issue they devoted to this summer's music festivals.

Well, you sound like quite the classy fellow.

I go to Bonnaroo every year, and every year I get angrier and angrier at the soft faggy douchebags that are in attendance. I went last year especially excited to see The White Stripes and Tool. And I wasn't disappointed. The best part was when thousands of second generation flower children ran away crying with their fingers in their ears as soon as Tool started playing. I hope their mellow was harshed forever.

It's purely political. Bonnaroo gets to brag about "diversity", Metallica gets to add a hippie festival to their resume. I'm not the camping festival type in the 8 years of this decade I've been going to concerts. Lolla in the mid 90s would have been my scene, this hippie music not so much.

I like Metallica, but I give you one thing, they should have scheduled a couple other shows to offset the effect of Metallica fans at Roo. Three shows in Atlanta, Dallas, and New York could have pretty much prevented any negative crowd mixing at Roo.

Let me guess. You're the drunk idiot always yelling "Play Sober!" at Tool concerts and trying to mosh during songs like Reflection.

You couldn't be more wrong. My favorite Tool song to hear live is either Parabola or Maynard's Dick. I also find it exceedingly ironic that I just got accused of being mainstream by somebody with the name of the most mainstream song by one of the most mainstream bands in the history of music as his ID.

musicky 2008-06-12 02:26:53 AM
Ditto on the frustrations with hippies. I once went to a concert by a certain band that I won't mention because they're Unpopular On The Internet™. I was just a kid. I wanted to shove some idiots around and get some bruises. It's just instinct. I was even more excited because it had been raining all day, giving the outdoor venue maximum mud potential.

I was not aware at the time that this band's fanbase consisted entirely of hippies, their hippie children, soccer moms, and fat college chicks. Like I said, I was just a kid. The hippies et al. were not pleased with my attempts at having a good time (at a rock and roll concert, even) and so instead of fighting back, the wimps just ran away from me, a scrawny, mud-covered fourteen-year-old. Christ, it was BORING. I'd rather have gone to an Insane Clown Posse show and fought through the crowds of redneck juggalos. At least they know how to have a good time.

Davescookies 2008-06-12 03:00:57 AM
When forced to choose between Juggalos and hippies I take the easy way out. An olive fork to the eye.

Fair enough. I just never understand all the hatred for hippies at concerts. Then again I don't find it necessary to knock people around and whatnot to have a good time.

Millzners 2008-06-12 07:21:24 AM
Guys, please. The preferred nomenclature is "wookie", not hippie. Hippies went to woodstock and fought for civil rights; they are now old. Wookies go to Bonaroo and Disco Biscuits concerts and pass out in strange places:

Yeah, um, not so much. The festival scene has been alive and growing since well before that. Of course the media giants fail to notice the dozens of smaller regional festivals (maybe 5K to 10K people) that have been thriving all along. Best times and best music.

And of course, when you start to invite artists that produce music targeted at douchebags, yeah, you are going to get douchebags at your festival. "Bad douchebag! the porta-pot is supposed to be upright!"

My girlfriend is leaving for Bonnaroo tomorrow morning. You couldn't pay me enough to go to a music festival headlined by Pearl Jam and Metallica.

Bonnaroo was the greatest weekend of the last two years for me. So SO crushed when they announced the line-up and it included Metallica. Way to go on that one. :( should be in line to get in right now.

CNN aren't happy merely being hacks. They really work at being The Hacks.

BTW, people that biatch about hippies are usually just Pitchfork types that hate jam bands. Your loss.

Not exactly my bag, but looks like an awesome event. So many of those, so little time...

Got 2 lined up for the summer, that's all I can get my job-holdin' mortgage-payin' ass off to. Gone (for now) are the days of dropping everything for a tour.
