So, judging by the first few seconds of this vid, Dick dale played with his strings upside down?

Awesome song

While the man is a certainly a badass, from that era I like the Centurions better.

I think he was a lefty and that's just how he learned to play.

They stole that song from "Pulp Fiction".

Dick Dale had an amazing career. Sad to see him heading out, what with the rectal cancer and all.

I didn't know he was in bad shape. I saw him two or three years ago and he was going strong.

Ease of bowel movement has nothing to do with someone's predisposition to getting rectal cancer..

Good, while I've got you here...my son and I were watching a video of Buckethead doing Jordan live. What the fark is that button he's pressing on the body of the guitar rather than picking the strings?

That button is called a kill switch. It acts like an on/off button, shorting the signal from the guitar to the amp, or pick ups to the other workings (there are different ways off installing it). Tom Morello from RATM also used one. It takes amazing fingering to create such clean tones with out striking the strings, thus proving buckethead is some sort of guitar playing robot/god

Ever heard of sarcasm?

That guy amazes me. How the hell does he pick like that? He be keepin' his pick hand strong! Can't remember the exact gauge of his strings, but I think the low E is a freakin' cable of some kind, it's so huge.

I called my son to tell him about the kill switch. Since one of his favorite bands is Killswitch Engage, he really got a kick out of your reply.

He plays with the strings upside down and uses 16's. He could carve your heart out with those fingers.

The drummer looks like it was one of the other band-member's dad. About 20 years older than the rest of the band, and a total square.

my pleasure, I will always be glad to share my guitar knowledge, or buckethead knowledge with any who inquier. I think it is awsome that you let your 5 year old listen to buckethead. Get the album electric tears and use it for story time with him. You could make up a wonderful childrens story out of each title and have it last for the song. These are the reasons I ant kids.

/you should also give him a toy robot

Better yet, find some videos of Buckethead playing Disney tunes. He's been to the Disney theme parks over 500 times and plays some of those Disney tunes from time to time. He's a total Disney freak - just like many 5 year olds.

16s. Jebus. And I thought I went big moving up to 11s.

Those were the good old days when guitarists were recognized for their unique tone rather than how fast they could shred. Obviously electric guitar was in its early days then but still. Great sounds.

/rather listen to Adrian Belew than Vai/Malmsteen/ad nauseum.

I was distracted by that blonde in the front.

Too bad the cameraman didn't think to pan over to Dick Dale even once.

I've talked to DD about this and he's not too keen on the usage of this clip.
He would rather be known for his later works, and for helping Jummy get started.

One of my prized possessions is a heavy-guage guitar pick from the first Dick Dale concert I saw (Hoboken in late 1993, his first East Coast show in over 30 years).

It's got a deep groove melted into it, almost a third of the way in.

From his picking.

Absofarkinglutely amazing show.

And Pulp Fiction stole it from Black-Eyed Peas. What's it to you?

Fun fact: Dick Dale is Armenian, and many of his songs come from traditional Armenian (also Greek) music.

Fun fact: The guys in his band don't look like they're having much fun

Dick Dale may be getting on in years, but he still kicks ass with Miserlou

Stopheles 2008-06-12 09:30:00 AM
I wish people would use "Surf Beat" on soundtracks and TV shows, etc. Not only is it AT LEAST as good as "Miserlou," but Dick Dale actually wrote it ("Miserlou" is a traditional song) and as such would make a bit more royalties from its usage.

"Nitro" from 1993 would also work.
