(Starpulse) Cool Genesis to release "When In Rome 2007," a Three DVD set. Regrettably you will have to penetrate the cursed womb that is Wal-mart exclusively to procure it. Is Peter ever going to make a real Genesis reunion happen?   (starpulse.com) divider line 47

I like Wal-Mart for the freak-watching. Buying the Genesis DVD is just a bonus.

HappyHarryHardOn: "Supper's ready" performed live? or "The Knife"...ohhhhhhhhhhh

I'd be happy if they turned Steve loose on "Blood on the Rooftops".

Doesn't look like any kind of reunion is happening for now. Pete's too busy with his side projects and Phil wants to build model railroads with his kids.

Steve, Tony and Mike should just grab Alison Krauss once she's done with Robert Plant. She knows one Genesis song already.

This is great. The more bands who bypass the RIAA and sell through walmart, the less money the RIAA has and the closer they are to going away. It also may force them to rethink their business model as more and more of their talent ditches them in favor of better deals elsewhere.

/Spinstopper is getting old.

For some reason, I thought of this when I read that line:

The more you tighten your grip, RIAA, the more royalty payments will slip through your fingers.

Looking it over, that really isn't a bad set.

I won't be buying it, but it's more representative of the Peter years than I would have guessed.

If Peter (and let's not forget Steve Hackett) sign on, I would go anywhere, pay any price, to see it.

But yeah, I'm not holding my breath either.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. The entire reason he left was because of a sudden onset of crippling stage fright, for no apparent reason.
Hasn't performed live since 1970 or so.

I went to Wal-Mart yesterday to buy the Journey CD/DVD (which is very good, btw). I usually avoid going to that freakshow at all costs if I can help it. I guess I'l have to go again for the Genesis DVD.

I can't find this anywhere. I see some on Amazon that aren't my region, walmart.com is less than helpful... I ended up ordering from the official site, but they claim it's on back order and will take up to 4 weeks. Screw that.

This and the fact that they canceled the Blu-Ray release makes me feel very raw in the rectal area.

Poor guy. To be able to write stuff like "The Knife" and to be unable to perform them live. Sucks.

there is no sense in a genesis reunion, they are too old to do it right. the musical box has this area more than suitably covered.

It's damn good. And for $19.98 it's tremendous.

Carpet Crawlers. That's how you end a show.

Only thing better is the ending of the Supper's Ready fadeout on "Seconds Out", where the crowd doesn't make a peep until the song's faded all the way out - and then they go apeshiat.

This doesn't change my opinion that the "Second's Out" peformance of Supper's Ready is one of the all-time butcherings of a classic.

I don't know about all that, but that particular album certainly lacks balls. It might be the over-glossed production. If you think it just plain sucks, though, maybe you're not playing it loud enough...?

Subby: Is Peter ever going to make a real Genesis reunion happen?

Gods below, I hope not.

I love old Genesis, and I love Gabriel, but I can't see a reunion producing interesting or powerful material. Both went pop in the 80s, and while Gabriel branched out into new forms and sounds, Genesis stood in a safely in the middle-of-the-road.

There's no way either will go back to the prog days, but the real question is: would they produce something fresh and exciting, or will it be like every other reunion that creates boring, riskless dreck?

Toto used to be amazing, but their last album had one great song on it, and nine snoozers. Yes keeps trying to milk the prog years but only ends up creating cheese when they make a new album. What rock epics have come out of the Eagles' new material, or is everyone stuck on their unplugged version of "Hotel California"?

And what a reunion be like live? Powerless performances of "Turn it On Again"? A capella renditions of "You'll Be Here in My Heart" with dumbek accompaniment? "Groovy Kind of Love" as it's always been - completely devoid of groove or emotion?

Genesis made some unforgettable stuff back in the day, before MTV killed music, when they were young and hungry and the industry took chances, but seeing them together would probably be like the last few Floyd concerts before Gilmore hung it up ... lifelessly going through the motions out of nostalgia.

I don't like being a downer, Mister Frodo, but the Shire's history.

SynthLord speaks the truth BUT...

that remake (new window for video, don't watch it - LISTEN) of Carpet Crawlers that they did was so freakin full of WIN that, if they did decide to put their hearts into it, I would expect nothing more than greatness. Or suck.

THIS.
I like the post-gabriel songs that are on "seconds out" but Collins just somehow doesn't do justice to the Gabriel era ones.
Sure, Phil's a good singer, and sounds kind of similar to Gabriel in a way [especially w/ the harmony vocals they did together] but Phil's voice is a little higher or lighter [he still has a good range tho] and not as rough as Gabriel and doesn't have the same amount of character in his voice that Gabriel's had/has. wow... i didn't describe it nearly as well as i thought i would've... hmmmm

Collins does post-Gabriel songs very well/excellently [of course] but he somehow just doesn't do Gabriel era songs justice. [except for maybe "Carpet Crawlers".]
LOL on a side note, i'd LOVE to see Gabriel sing a Post-Gabriel Genesis song or two...

In a tiny way, [comparing Phil to Gabriel as vocalists in Genesis] it's kind of like Wetton [KC era] singing previous songs that Greg Lake originally sang on. Greg Lake was a wonderful singer... like the Choir Boy of Prog. rock [along with Jon Anderson, of course] but Wetton didn't have the same range...
and he had a slight lisp or something [pronounced 's' as 'sh' sometimes].
like i read on the net 8 years ago, "John Wetton is like Greg Lake after 50 cigarrettes."

I think Collins does a terrible job singing it, and I think the mix doesn't make Hackett sound anywhere near as crisp as he should.

I saw The Musical Box in Montreal a few weeks back. It was the closest thing that I can ever get to living a live Genesis show. The stage was set up the exact same way, ditto with the costumes and the sound was straight out of the album. Great thing as well; they played Foxtrot/Selling England By the Pound, so I got Cinema Show, Supper's Ready, Watcher of the Skies, all that good stuff.

fark seeing Genesis, see Musical Box

I saw some Geneis songs by The Musical Box on youtube.
It was farking amazing. Spot on, especially the vocals and guitar tone... it's amazing how much the lead singer sounds like a 1971-1975 Gabriel...

[sigh] if only they'd come to Western Canada.

p.s. i read somewhere that they have plans in 2008 or 2009 to do Collins era shows or tour. I don't know if they're gonna put the drummer [who kinda looks and quite sounds like Phil] on vocals, or just get another new vocalist....

p.p.s. do you know if the gabriel era Musical Box has any DVD's out?

Now THAT would be interesting!
And do all the songs that Peter doesn't do now?
ie. most of his first four albums?
sounds cool to me.

but you never know... maybe they'd try out the Peter guy for the Phil era one as lead vocalist... who knows, maybe he can do a good impression of BOTH of them?

but then again, from the backing vocals I heard from "the Phil", he was pretty spot on himself...

[i think i either read that 'new direction' info on their website or (gasp!) wikipedia... i forget...]

The black tour - everything's in black (literally) and there are 2 "eyes" for the slides. Virtually - in a visual sence - it's the complete opposite of the WHITE show.
