Alzheimer's Sufferers Demand Cure For Pancakes

June 18, 1997 | Issue 31•21

WASHINGTON, DC-Alzheimer's sufferers from across the nation marched on random buildings throughout Washington, D.C., Washington State, and Iowa City, IA, Monday, demanding that Congress prioritize finding a cure for pancakes, the nation's third-leading breakfast food.

Alzheimer's Sufferers Demand Cure For Pancakes

"Until Budenheimer's is cured, there will never be enough bread in the laundry," said a spokesperson for the group, who identified himself variously as Dr. James Lustig, Brian Boitano, Mr. Jet Captain and Socko the Happy-Turtle. "Until we are all properly rotated and serviced, none of us can ever truly be plaid."

Lustig's comments were echoed by fellow marchers, who warned that unless a cure for pancakes is found by 2000, they will continue to protest until led gently back to their homes by loved ones or trained health-care providers.

Urinating in vending machines and occasionally emitting bird-like squawks, a group of protesters in downtown D.C. resisted police crowd-dispersal efforts for six hours, linking arms and joining in a chant of "I like Ike!"

"Pancakes are delicious, but their wily ways are not to be trusted," said Alzheimer's sufferer Marie Klapisch, speaking to a group of ducks gathered in front of the U.S. Treasury Building. "Get those underpants away from my grandchildren's foot medicine, you filthy, dirty-minded bastards!" She then burst into tears and ran off, scattering the assembled waterfowl.

Pancakes, according to officials at the International House Of Pancakes' headquarters in Geneva, are consumed by approximately 40 million Americans each morning. They are, IHOP spokespeople said, extremely delicious whether served with syrup or a variety of fruity toppings, and are available 24 hours a day. Yet they admit that, as of now, there is no cure in sight.

According to the General Accounting Office, current annual funding for pancake-related Alzheimer's research is approximately zero dollars. That amount, GAO officials said, has remained the same since the current record-keeping system for federal budget expenditures was established in 1809.

With no cure for pancakes on the horizon and no federal research funds, the AD-afflicted activists have a long road ahead. Nevertheless, the group has continued to fight for its cause, leaving faucets running unattended for days at a time, placing tray after tray of ice cubes in mailboxes, and even, in some cases, throwing dogs at parked cars in what are presumed to be acts of solidarity with the pancake-cure movement.

"That battleship silverware of yours is no damn sofa sink hobo," Lakeland, FL, senior Elmer Bass said. "Until a cure is found, there will be no more change given for anything less than a 40-dollar bill."

The feelings of the Alzheimer's community were best summed up by retired lawn-care professional Max Gherkin of Flagstaff, AZ, who marched all the way to Washington clad only in a frilly, 1940s-era ladies' support hose that once belonged to his deceased wife.

"Fellow Shriners," Gherkin said, "Alzheimer's is a crippling disease that can cause dear family members to lose not only their fruit flies, but their self-esteem, fertilizer invoices, Pastor Bob, and personal dignity, as well. I beg you all, from deep in my rototill: Frog battleship now, and please put an end to pancakes, pans, cakes, cake pans, pants, snakes, and all they represent. Firemen! Can't you see the bicycle release valve is already undersea?"

He then burst into a string of expletives, as his bathrobe had become entangled in a bush.

Okay. Somewhat disturbing on the same day an article appeared about Terry Pratchett having alzheimer's. But, at least now I know. We can do better against McCain than making fun of people afflicted with a genuine disease. Start with the Keating 5, continue with the Abramoff debacle. Thank you.

MorrisBird: Somewhat disturbing on the same day an article appeared about Terry Pratchett having alzheimer's.

Quite true - what a tragedy.

FWIW I think the meme caught hold not because of the Alzheimer's angle but because it was a metaphor for flip-flopping on an issue.

Most people (including myself till a couple days ago) had no idea of the original context. So I wouldn't assume that everyone who uses it in a McCain joke is a cold-hearted bastard.

I can actually see that coming about. How about:

"if the name is McCain, more of the same"
"vote Hussein, down the drain"
"New Koolaid BHO. Less flavor, more expensive"
"Elect McCain. Get another old fart off the road"

//not a troll, just playing with the ideas

I'd rank that more along the lines of a flea market t-shirt from Alabama as opposed to a nationally marketed bumper sticker. :)

McCain is going to have a very difficult time in this election. He's going to have to try and distance himself from Bush's failed policies while at the same time promising the radical right that he'll continue those very same policies. He's also gotta motivate a depressed and demoralized voter base and somehow get the fiscal conservatives back into the fold. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that his opponent is well funded and has demonstrated the ability to organize/run a very good national campaign organization. And finally - he has to get the independants convinced that he can be trusted.

I suspect that our dear old johnny boy is going to wave the flag very very hard and make as much mention of his prior service as possible. He'll not only wrap himself in red/white & blue, he'll have it transfused into his bloodstream and wear contact lenses with little US flags printed over the corneas. All the while, he'll try to paint Obama as inexperienced and imply he's cowardly for not spending time in uniform.

One thing is fairly obvious tho - McCain's people can't sling mud at Obama. not only did Obama survive the Hillary hate machine, but he could rip 'em open with all sorts of factoids just based on McCain's public record regarding lobbysts. And that's not mentioning the stuff that could get 'accidently' leaked from the senate ethics committee.

Weaver95: McCain is going to have a very difficult time in this election.

I think that is an understatement.

One thing I think is going to really make this interesting is the debates. I'd venture to say that the two of them debating very well may decide the election. I also think the debates will favor Obama.

Obama looks good on stage, no doubt about it. And he won't rattle easy, which has to have McCain worried. I honestly don't know how it'll work out, but I suspect McCain and his people are pondering their options as we sit here and type.

"I have a few years on my opponent," McCain noted, "so I am surprised that a young man has bought in to so many failed ideas."

Yes. It's much better to be an old man who did a 180 on several strong convictions - to the Bush position.

"We can't sit back when the press clearly, clearly is giving Obama very favorable coverage and very little tough scrutiny and not sort of call fouls when they happen," added Black.

Oh, STFU. No recent politician has gotten a freer ride than McCain.

McCain and all the Repubs will go down hard in November. The economy is so farked. Americans don't care if their civil rights are being peeled away but foreclose on their homes and make it cost $100.00 to fill their gas tanks and they will be howling for a regime change.

The pancakes meme is just a way for Democrats to accuse McCain of being feebleminded. Obama did this too, then he said America had 57 states. Fail.

As for the coont myth, Obama refuses to deny the existence of the whitey tape, and that's a much more legitimate concern than the lies about McCain.

My last conversation with Dad went something like this:

Dad: 'Obama can't win against McCain.'
Me: 'why's that Dad?'
D: 'because he can't.'
M: 'yeah, but WHY can't he?'
D: 'well...because he can't.'
M: 'ok, i'm still confused here - why, exactly, do you believe that Obama cannot win against McCain?'
D: 'because he can't.'
M: *sigh*

In every conversation we've had about this upcoming election, our coversation eventually ends up being a variation on that theme. Obama can't win. No reason...he just can't. Personally, I don't get it. Then again, Dad spends all day long watching fox news channel in between naps on the couch. Must be a fox news channel thing or something.

I'm starting to think that it's not so much that people believe Obama can't win, it's that he cannot be permitted to win. People (including my father, apparently) seem to get this mental block about Obama's potential. Their objection isn't based on objective analysis, but more on emotional shock - 'obama can't win, obama can't win, obama can't win' is more 'avoidance of reality' than a statement of Obama's potential weaknesses on the campaign trail.

The fact of the matter is that Obama *could* win against McCain. He has a number of factors working to his benefit. But it's by no means certain. And that's about all I can see.

I guess what puzzles me the most about all of this is the mental wall that some people have concerning Obama. For some reason, their brain shuts down when they consider the possiblity of an Obama victory. I see it from the trolls on this site and I see it from people I meet on a semi-daily basis.

The most surprising thing I've witnessed so far is my parents. They voted for Bush twice (along with the rest of my aunts and uncles and their kids) while I was the only one to vote Kerry in 04 (being that I was 16 in 2000). This year, my mom and dad plan to vote for Obama in the general election. It just blows my mind.

Dad is going to vote for McCain. He really does think McCain is a great guy and that Obama is going to lead to country to ruin. He just can't, y'know, explain WHY he believes any of this. That's the part that disturbs me - the lack of an explanation.
